Outfit Formula: Summery Olive and Black

If you enjoy wearing black and olive in mild, warm. and hot weather, here are simpler looks that are easy to put together. You’ll find toppers layered over some of the looks, which provides great insulation when the air-conditioning is too cold. They also work when it’s cooler in the morning and evening, or when you’re by the coast.

1. Column of Black plus Olive Topper

A graphic black tee is combined with a black, A-line, front-slit midaxi skirt to create a column of black. The tee is semi-tucked to showcase some waist, but you can leave it untucked if it’s not too long. An olive shacket with scrunched sleeves tops the pairing. Black slides are the casual and breezy finishing touch. Add a bag to match.

2. Olive and Black and White Separates

Here, olive separates are combined with a black and white support act. The outfit on the left pairs casual wide leg olive utility pants with a fluid black knitted top. It’s semi-tucked to showcase the belt detail on the waist. The outfit on the right pairs black wide leg pants with a white tee. A slim, lightweight, very long olive cardigan is worn over the lot and creates a dramatic effect. Black sandals and bag complete the outfits.

3. Black Skirt and Olive Tank

A casual black flared and tiered midi skirt is combined with a body con olive tank top. It’s tucked into the skirt to showcase the waist. An earthy cinnamon belt accentuates the waist and adds a high-contrast touch, as well as another colour. Dressy high heeled tan sandals were chosen as the shoes, although I’d have preferred to see casual flat or low heeled sandals instead. Or ballet flats, espadrilles, or western boots. Add a bag to match.

4. Column of White Plus Olive Vest

This rendition incorporates a subtle bit of black through the trim of the boots. The rich brown hair of the model provides a dark touch too. For the rest, a column of white is created by pairing cropped relaxed white jeans with a matching tee. An olive vest tops the column. Whiskey boots introduce a third colour. Their dark trim bookends the model’s dark hair. I’d have added a black or cinnamon belt so that the outfit looks more finished when the vest is removed, and a bag to match. Add jewellery, watch, and eyewear as desired.

Improve Your Wardrobe Storage Spaces

Store and display wardrobe items to make things neat, organized, inviting, and easy to access. When your closet is tidy, you can pack more efficiently in limited spaces and items will be more visible so you can see exactly what your options are.

Style Is Organized

When storage spaces are tight, consider space saving hangers, drawer and shelf dividers, shoe boxes and racks, extra hooks, rods and shelves, over-door hangers, accessory baskets, jewellery trees and boxes, and shoe trays under your bed.

Pack shoes so that one is facing forward and the other backwards to save space. Swap out or rearrange wardrobes seasonally to keep a focused set of items on hand. Once everything is optimal it takes discipline to keep it that way, but it’s worth the effort.

Trend: Polo and Johnny Collars

The ‘80s and ‘90s influence on today’s fashion continues with an influx of polo collars and Johnny collars on tees, knitted tops, knitwear, pop-over blouses, rugby shirts, and dresses. Collars are usually knitted. Polo collars have plackets with buttons like the classic polo shirt, whereas Johnny collars don’t have buttons. The Johnny collar is usually accompanied with a buttonless placket or front slit. That said, some retailers use the term polo collar and Johnny collar interchangeably since the look and vibe is similar.

Polo and Johnny collars grace knitted and woven tops across a range of silhouettes, fabrics, and fits. You see them on dresses too. Fits are body con, tailored, fluid and oversized. There are dressy and casual versions. Warm weather and cold weather options. All sorts of lengths, colours, and patterns too. Some plackets are long and exaggerated. The collection shows ample variety.

As someone who enjoys tops and dresses with collars, I like this trend. I’ve been wearing polo shirts since the ‘80s and continue to do just that. To my eye, they are an iconic classic. I’ve been collecting polo collar tops for a while. As they came up as a fringe look in fashion, I snapped them up. Now that the look is having a fashion moment and gaining moment, I’m more spoiled for choice. Here is my current collection of tops with polo collars. Some items are new, while others are several years old. I’d like to add a striped rugby shirt to my collection, and have my eye on the one from Ralph Lauren Polo.

Over to you. Are you wearing polo and Johnny collar tops? If not, does the trend interest you?

Outfit Formula: Dress and Tee

If you wore t-shirts under slip dresses in the ‘90s, raise your hand. I wore body suits under sleeveless dresses too. The ‘90s are trending strongly in fashion, so you might like to revisit this layering trend. Wearing a tee, mesh top, or tank under a sleeveless or strappy dress adds insulation, coverage, and layering interest. With the right layers, you can take a very summery dress into transitional weather too.

Onto some outfit ideas.

1. Tee and A-Line Dress

Pop a streamlined white tee under a sleeveless black A-line dress. The sleeves of this tee are short, but they can be longer. Instead of white, the tee can be a narrow black and white stripe, or a patterned mesh top too. Add summery black shoes like these mules, and a bag to match the palette of the outfit.

2. Mesh Top and Slip Dress

Here, a solid grey long sleeved mesh top is layered under a silky patterned slip dress. Footless grey mesh socks that match the top accessorize the lower legs adding layering interest to the look. Silver pumps add shine to the outfit. Add a bag that picks up a colour of the pattern. Alternatively, layer a patterned mesh top under a solid slip dress.

3. Tank and Pinafore Dress

Add a tank or tee to a pinafore dress like the example shown here. It’s white, but you can choose any colour. This dress has very low armholes, but there are versions with high armholes. Western boots in a shade of whiskey are the shoes of choice. The whiskey complements the earthy green. Feel free to wear open shoes instead of boots. Add a bag to match.

4. Sweater and Strappy Empire Dress

Last, a cinnamon and navy form fitting mock turtleneck sweater is layered under a navy and cobalt strappy empire cut dress. Cinnamon socks match the sweater and are worn with chunky white platform sneakers. A brown and blue striped bag is added for a pattern mixed effect. Its colours are not an exact match, but work with the palette of the outfit. Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.

Fabulous Fit for Jackets and Coats

The correct fit looks and feels good. Fits can be tailored, fluid, or oversized. Opt for a roomier tailored fit to feel less constricted when you stride and drive. Going too oversized gets in the way of life and looks like you’re wearing someone’s else’s clothes.

The Correct Outerwear Fit

Lined jackets and coats can be altered to fit. It’s expensive but can be worth it. Knee-length coats work over most outfits. Side-entry pockets should be in the right place if you use them, and belts should be in the right position on your torso.

Jackets and coats must close properly for insulation, but can be left open for ease, comfort, and to showcase outfit layering detail. Open outerwear also creates a vertical line that draws the eye up and down, elongating and streamlining the silhouette.
