Outfit Formula: Casual Fall Vest

If you like to wear puffer vests — or “body warmers” as I like to call them — here’s an easy casual outfit combination to pull together in transitional weather, or when it suits your climate. You can probably shop your closet for the look. Here are the components.

Layering Top + Sleek Bottoms + Denim Jacket/Shirt + Puffer Vest + Loafers + Structured Bag

There’s an example of each of the components in the collection below. The dressier bag and footwear create a polished effect. Of course, you can choose any colour palette, although I like the effect of the low contrast and tonal colours here. It’s dark, but imagine the outfit harmonizing in light tonal cream, tan and toffee.

Some substitutions:

  • Wear black Ponte pants instead of jeans.
  • Choose a scoop or V-neck layering top if turtlenecks aren’t your thing, and throw on a camisole.
  • Choose a denim shirt instead of a denim jacket.
  • Adding patterned socks to the loafers is a good way to stay warm.
  • You could leave out the denim jacket/shirt, but then you’ll lose the interesting layered effect. That said, you might prefer it that way.
  • Sneakers, booties, or tall boots worn over skinny jeans are just as fab.
  • A casual bag creates a much more relaxed vibe.

I don’t have a puffer vest because I worry about my arms being chilly. I used to wear one for horse riding, so they have a casual equestrian vibe that appeals to me. Maybe I would be warm enough with a turtleneck and denim jacket. Only one way to find out.

10 Unexpectedly Fab Finds for Fall

It’s peak season and I’ve been shopping up a storm with clients. These are some of the items that were unexpectedly fabulous. Some items are simple and basic like a wardrobe essential, while others make more of a statement. In most cases there are colour options, so remember to browse them all.

1. Gap Crossbody Bag

This a WOW bag for $32. It’s faux leather, neat, tidy, reasonably well made, and polished. The guitar strap is long so tall gals have plenty of length. Works as well for petites. Very comfy. Fun striped lining. Weatherproof and robust. Practical size. Not too small and not too bulky. There’s a pocket at the back of the bag where you can store your phone for easy access. ALL the colours are nice.

2. Gibson Cozy Fleece Tunic

Cowls can be overwhelming, but this one lies quite flat and works on most neck lengths. Ridiculously cosy, and not too oversized. Can be layered under a regular coat quite easily thanks to sleek sleeves. Wear it at home or in very casual settings. Works for petites, regulars and talls. Runs a size big, but they’ve included an XXS. Read the rave reviews.

3. Caslon Stripe Panel Sweater

Another very cosy item that works well to camouflage the midsection but again, is not too oversized, and can easily be layered under jackets and outerwear. The flare works well for wider hips and thighs. Interesting stripe placement. All the colours are nice. Long enough for tall gals. Good over tight bottoms.

4. Banana Republic Machine Washable Merino Wool Turtleneck

If you’re a sleek turtleneck gal with a long neck who runs cold, you MUST try this darling. It’s gently fluid in your size, but size up if you prefer a roomier fit. Perfect layered under a blazer. Simple Chic. And made of a machine washable wool. I bought the ink blue because I’m covered with black turtlenecks, and unfortunately none of the other colours appealed to me.

5. Zara Faux Shearling Coat

Real shearling is pricey, and fab faux versions are hard to find, especially in shades of blue. This one from Zara is stunning and well made. Does not crease. Drapes beautifully. The blue is a little darker in person, and the patch pockets are well positioned. Streamlined but roomy. It works particularly well on tall gals, but good on regular height gals too. Not good on petites or short arms. Can be dressed up or down.

6. La Canadienne Solana Bootie

A smart casual flat bootie with a high shaft that looks chic and is very comfortable is a tall order. The Solana is pricey but you’re getting a versatile, quality piece that is weatherproof. Very flattering on the feet and ankles. The grey-brown gets my top vote.

7. Caslon Peplum Tee

Peplum tees or tees with hem flounces can look juvenile, or the flounces are in the wrong place. These tees look casually sophisticated and playful, and fit well. The fabric drapes quite nicely and isn’t too thin. Fab layered under a jacket or cardigan. Works as well for tall gals as it does for petites. The stripes get my top votes.

8.  Gap Modern Long Sleeve Crew Tee

It’s hard to find a simple long-sleeved tee that is thick, tailored and fairly polished. Most tees are thin, oversized, have sleeves that are hard to layer over, too wide necklines, and make you feel un-pulled together. These tees are made of substantial fabric, come in talls and petites, have a neat and tidy neckline, and are fairly fitted. They are great layered under just about anything.

9. Everlane Large Street Nylon Zip Backpack

I laughed when one of my clients was “afraid to tell me” that she sports a practical backpack as her work bag from now on because she commutes by bus and foot and needs an extra healthy option for her body. I asked her to show me the backpack — and surprised her by loving it for her style. The Everlane backpack works well for her avant-garde, polished, Tomboy and urban style. It’s extremely sleek and neat, and not overly casual like I thought it might be. Super cute.

10. White House Black Market Messenger Bags

Messenger bags can be very uncomfortable, and guitar straps tend to adorn smaller bags. The ones from WHBM are tailored, comfy, quite well made, and come with a guitar strap. The olive is unique, and all the colours are fab. You can buy guitar straps separately too.

Plaid Blazer with Rock ‘n’ Roll Vibe

A new outfit from Carelia Morán of My Small Wardrobe, whom we introduced to YLF in July 2013.

This is such a fun example of Angie’s Tee, Blazer & Trendy Bottoms ensemble. Carelia has tucked a concert tee with black background into dark wash, high-waisted flares. This effectively creates a colour of column and lenghtens the leg line. So do the black, high-heeled platform boots that fit the rock ‘n’ roll vibe of the outfit splendidly. Carelia’s longer length fluid-fit plaid blazer is structured on the shoulder which helps to streamline the look. The graphic tee and black bandana worn as a neckerchief add a good dose of edge. Carelia’s sleek bob, red lippie and small crossbody with oversized tassel provide contrasting polish.

Must-Haves: Fall & Winter 2017

Fashion has become a complex melting pot of sartorial choices where almost anything goes as long as you add an intentionally on-trend component to the outfit. Individualism is the most important trend of all. Take the PERSONAL in personal style to heart, because you have the power to pick and choose from the trend buffet, and sport it your way.

Here are my suggested must-haves for the cold-weather season, which cut across all body types, ages, price points and lifestyles. Short, sweet and to the point. As always, it’s a question of finding the renditions that work best for you.

1. Create a Maximal Effect

It’s about wearing “it all” together to create a harmonized whole. That means remixing patterns, textures, colours, layers and silhouettes, because the only limit to the aesthetic is your own tolerance for the combination. Sport multiple accessories, combine a range of colours and patterns, dress in multiple visual layers, and don’t forget dramatic nail polish, rainbow hair, and make-up. Feel free to interpret maximalism as fully as you see on the catwalks, or tone things down considerably.

2. Sport Tall Boots

To be clear, tall boots never went out of style. They simply took a back seat to trendy booties for seven years. Trends have brought back tall boots as the “new fresh look”, and lengths range from mid-calf to over-the-knee. Wear them heeled and dressy, casual and flat, or somewhere in between. Combine tall boots with all sorts of dress and skirt lengths, skinnies, leggings/jeggings, and culottes (wide crops.) The newer way to wear tall boots is to combine tailored flat riding boots with both casual and dressy skirts and frocks.

3. Add Structure to Your Outfit

To recap, structure is about accentuating the actual shape of your body, like defining the waist and hips, the shape of your arms and legs, or the shape of your shoulders. So think TAILORING. Sport beautifully tailored jackets, dresses, trousers and skirts. Sport form-fitting tops. Add a waist-defining belt to outfits. Wear jackets and coats with waist ties. Tuck tops into bottoms to showcase waistlines.

4. Catch the Blazer Bug

It is at last, a jacket season, and not a knitwear season. That means that knitwear is simple and basic so that it can be layered under a jacket like a blazer. Remind yourself of the beauty of the blazer, and sport one. Often. Blazers don’t need to be stiff, corporate and conservative. They can be fun, festive, and are a nod to the Structure trend. Blazers can also be layered under coats so that you can wear them through Winter.

5. Enjoy Full-Length Pants & Jeans

The cropped pants trend has been relentless for six years, and booties complemented fashion’s emphasis on the ankle. Things are changing. Full-length pants and jeans are moving back into the limelight so make sure you have those too. This does NOT mean that cropped pants are dated or out of style. We’re simply getting to the point where all lengths are fashionable so that we can take our pick and sport looks our way. Trends are trying to support the Individualism trend as best they can.

6. Flirt with Daytime Velvet

We saw the velvet trend come through last year, and it has gained momentum. What I like most, is that velvet is NOT reserved for dressy or evening occasions. This is 2017 where velvet has been transformed into an everyday fabric. The point is to wear it during the day as a regular item. Sport velvet tees, blazers, skirts, pants, sneakers, bags and dresses with a casual integrity, just like you did with Daytime Sparkle.

7. Rock a Fashion Era

Individualism means that it’s thoroughly modern to be Modern Retro. The most universally stylish, and probably your favourite silhouettes date back to fashion eras gone by, which we can remix today with a good dose of Current. Pick an era(s) and weave its sensibilities into your style. The ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s are particularly popular, but if you’re a ‘90s gal, or love the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s — go for it.

8. Wear Dresses & Skirts

The tall boots trend goes hand in hand with the trend to wear skirts and dresses in Autumn and Winter. Choose heavier weight dresses with sleeves, add hosiery, jacket/gilet, tall boots, scarf and coat. Or combine Winter skirts with knitwear, hosiery, booties, pumps or tall boots. Throw a blazer and/or coat over the top. And if you can find a suitable midi dress/skirt, wear it with tall tailored boots.

9. Wear Dressy Flats & Low Heels

There is fashion life beyond high heels. Gone are the days that you were at a stylish disadvantage if you couldn’t wear them. In many cases flats and low heels look more current paired with outfits, and are more practical too. The low heel in particular, is having its fashion moment across all heel and toe box shapes. I’m hoping this trend lasts forever.

Remember that these items have to mesh with the factors that affect your style. A hard-edged blazer is going to look very different to one that resembles the English countryside. Pander to your style descriptor, whether that’s rocker, avant-garde, boho, preppy, arty, corporate, casual, or hard-edged. You have to find the renditions that best express you and your style.

Personally, I’m all over ALL nine must-haves. Which trends are featuring in your Fall and Winter wardrobe refresh this season? Are there any surprises?

Redheads and Rose Gold

If you’re a redhead, I hope you’re wearing metallic rose gold because the combination is stunning. The same goes for strawberry blondes, and gals with ginger highlights. The coppery colour of rose gold complements the orange hues of red hair absolutely perfectly. It’s a match made in heaven.

Some rose gold goodies to whet your appetite:

Of course, rose gold is fab for non-redheads too. Much like pewter, it seems to strike an interesting balance between a warm and cool metal. My complexion favours warm colours, making yellow gold my choice of metal. Yet my holiday complement at the moment is rose gold clutch and pumps because I find it sufficiently warm. Conversely, clients who much prefer silver and platinum over yellow gold, will wear rose gold because it’s sufficiently cool for them.

If you’re taking the day off, we hope you’re having a good one. We also wish our Canadian Fabbers a happy Thanksgiving. Go Team Redheads and Rose Gold.
