Trend: Padded Shoulder Tank

Sleeveless tops with strong shoulders started coming through a year and a half ago as a very fringe trend. Since then, the trend has gained momentum although it’s by no means mainstream. The padded shoulder tank is simply a fluid tank top or muscle T-shirt with padded shoulders. Sometimes there are extra details, like pleated shoulder seams, draped necklines, and keyhole necklines. The size of the shoulder pads can vary, as can the colours and patterns.

The padded shoulder tank top has a strong ‘80s vibe. In fact, some of them look like they’ve been transported through a time capsule. I like them because I love the ‘80s and I like shoulder pads! There is something futuristic about the silhouette that is playful and fun. To my eye, the versions with the more subtle shoulder pad and draped fabric exude elegance, thereby bringing out the allure of the arm and shoulder. As breezy as a sleeveless top, but not as exposed.

ASOS Only Curve Tank

Visually, the silhouette creates a strong and square shoulder line that is quite architectural. That can work well for narrow and/or sloped shoulders. Conversely, I’ve seen the silhouette work well on broad and square shoulders. Somehow, the fluid drape of the fabric across the shoulder and top part of the arm tempers a broad shoulder line.

The idea is to wear them just like you’d wear a regular T-shirt. I don’t wear T-shirts, but I like this silhouette a lot. I’ve seen some woven shirt versions and might give that a whirl. I assume I’ll be able to easily layer a jacket over the top, but will be sure to check. Over to you. What do you think of the padded shoulder tank?

Spotlight: B New York

B New York is a responsible, eco-friendly, and ethically produced women’s wear label made from sustainable materials. The brand believes that less is more, that clothing should be modern, timeless and last for more than a season, and that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice beauty for sustainability

Their motto: BE EFFORTLESS. BE CONSCIOUS. BE YOU.

B New York tries to incorporate organic and recycled materials such as up-cycled plastic bottles and containers into its collections whenever possible. This in turn helps reduce energy consumption, water usage, and greenhouse gasses. The brand shares that it uses recycled polyester, recycled trim, and organic natural fibres in its garments, and is committed to environmentally conscious manufacturing practices.

I see a whole lot of casual, comfortable, and neutral fabness in the brand’s handwriting. I see interesting garment detailing, simplicity, and a likeness to Eileen Fisher. Items are relaxed, mostly fluid, mostly solid, quite drapey, and sometimes oversized. They look versatile and appropriate for a casual or smart casual lifestyle, and a retired or work-from-home life too. That said, you can dress up some of the tops and toppers for a less casual vibe. You can add a maximal outfit support act to the simple integrity, if that’s more your cup of tea.

Sizes run from an XS to XL, making the brand less size-inclusive than I had hoped. From some of the reviews, toppers run big, so you might need to size down. The brand is available from its own site, and at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. Prices are a little more than regular US chain stores, but items do go on sale, and especially at Macy’s. Items are less expensive than Eileen Fisher, but they don’t do petites. Alek Wek is the brand’s ambassador, and I enjoyed her musings.

I really like the look of the cotton Tie-Sleeve High- Low Top, which reminds me a bit of a COS vibe. It’s a style goal to add more white Spring and Summer woven tops to my wardrobe so I ordered it. It’s voluminous, but with structure in all the right places, so I was hopeful it would work. But I needed a size down, which they do not offer. It was gorgeous and well made. Nice fabric, great sleeve detail, and quite architectural.

Striped tops make a graphic and strong statement. On to some very easy outfit formulas that can work in transitional weather.

1. Jeans

Combine a striped top with a pair of your favourite blue or white jeans. Add a pair of loafers, oxfords or ballet flats in a colour that works with the outfit. Add a neckerchief or scarf that matches the palette for a bit of fun pattern mixing. I like how the scarf and shoes here make the outfit a little dressier, but in a relaxed way.

2. Chinos

Combine a striped top with a pair of chinos in a shade of tan, toffee or olive. Add a blue or white denim jacket and fashion sneakers to your feet. The white sneakers effectively pick up the white of the tee. This striped tee has an interesting V-neck and binding, which is different to the norm. The high-low hemline is interesting too.

3. Dressier Pants

Combine a pair of dressier navy or black pants with a matching striped top. Add a blazer over the top in a bright, pastel, or neutral. White fashion sneakers pick up the white of the tee, creating a sense of outfit cohesion. Add casual or dressy flats if fashion sneakers aren’t your thing. Shoes that match the colour of the topper would look super cute too.

4. Smart Casual

And last, a smart casual version for a cooler day. Combine a pair of dressier jeans with a striped top. I think the tee would have looked better untucked, but tuck by all means if that’s your preference. Add a topper in a Spring tweed, and dressy shoes to complete the look. The animal print creates a fun pattern-mixed effect with the stripes and texture of the jacket. Add jewellery, bag and watch as desired.

Smart Casual

I bat for Team Casual Striped Top and can do a version of all these combinations using items from my wardrobe. Navy and white striped tops are a wardrobe essential for my style, although I love red and white stripes too. How about you?

Fab Finds: Shorts, Dresses, Hoops and Tops

Here are casual items that have been winners on clients, forum members, and friends recently as they refresh their Spring and Summer wardrobes. They represent a range of price points, and some of the items are on sale.

1. Wit & Wisdom Shorts

I have one pair of shorts. They are a part of my beach, pool, and swimming with doggies capsule. They are the first pair in this collection and from Wit & Wisdom. Although shorts are not my thing, I do like these long shorts! They fit well, look flattering, are very comfortable, launder easily, do not bag out, and are really robust. My clientele enjoy them too. You’ll find them across a range of neutrals, denim, cotton twills, and sizes. They run true to size or a size big. They magically fit both straighter and curvier body types. If I needed another pair of shorts, I’d get a white or light denim pair from the same brand.

2. Talbots Slub Knit Eyelet Detail Dress

A stylish and curvy petite friend sent a photo of herself wearing this dress in navy and it looks sublime. She wears it much better than the model. As a machine-washable, modal-cotton blend, it’s super soft and easy to launder. Might run a size big, and comes in a size-inclusive range. An excellent way to stay cool and covered in the high Arizona heat.

3. Veronica Beard Knitted Tops

These better-than-basic tees by Veronica Beard are more refined, interesting, and dressed-up than a regular basic tee. The fabric is lovely, and so far they’ve laundered well too. They are pricey, but do go on sale. For some of my clients, “upscale tees” are their thing because they don’t wear shirts and blouses. So having an assortment of this type of item to wear with jeans, shorts, chinos, utility pants and casual skirts works well for them. Relaxed, versatile, casual, and polished.

4. A New Day Hoop Earrings

One of my clients who wears hoop earrings every day had to unexpectedly leave them off for a while due to skin sensitivity. After an earring break, she renewed her hoops collection with this brand from Target. She’s very happy with them, and the skin irritations are under control. Affordable, super cute, and a large assortment. Most styles come in both metals, and many are nickel-free.

5. Nordstrom Rack Dresses

The Rack has been on fire over the last twelve months, especially online. My suggestion is to browse their items regularly for fab stuff at bargain prices. If you’re a frock person, look at their dresses because a gem will turn up in no time. My clients have scored beauties for a song and so have I. The first dress in the collection, a light blue linen dress by Theory, earned a place in my dress capsule. It’s gorgeous! Modern Classic, Euro, comfortable, pretty, breezy, casual, covered and alluring. It has a little back tie for waist definition if that’s your preference. It’s perfect to wear on a hot sunny day in our loft apartment that does not have air conditioning. Looks great with a denim jacket too.

6. Banana Republic Wrap-Effect Top

This item works well untucked so click the link and watch the product video to see that version in action. Great over skirts and pants. Structured with a little clever fluidity on the midsection. Waist-defining, but not clingy. Especially good on curvier body types, but it will work on straighter bodies too. Great layered under cardigans and jackets. Dress it either up or down.
