Vibrantly Fab in Connecticut

Stamford-based Jacqueline Andrea Smith (47) is a retail manager for a big box store, and documents her outfits on Instagram. Her style is on-trend and vibrant. She likes colour and midaxis, and is a big fan of shackets. Jacqueline often sports sneakers and chunky footwear, and her fab cropped ‘do adds edge and interest to everything she wears.

“Casual chic is how I would describe my style, if the look can’t be paired with a sneaker or chunky boots then it’s not for me. I’ve started to inject bold colors which brings me back to my island roots.”

Jacqueline goes cosy casual in a cobalt cashmere sweater and distressed skinnies. The light blue of the distressed skinnies works well with the vibrant blue of the untucked turtleneck. For a third piece, our blogger picked an oversized on-trend shacket that combines all the colours in her outfit. The plaid print brings pattern into the look, while the boxy fit adds volume that is balanced by the skinny jeans. White sneaks add a sporty touch. The small crossbody, bright red lippy and earrings add polish.

The striking combination of teal and camel is a successful mix of cool and warm tones. Jacqueline is sporting pleated wide-leg trousers at an extra long length. She’s buttoned up the cardigan and is wearing it as a sweater tucked into the trousers. This lengthens the leg line from the hip upwards, while the V-neck adds vertical integrity up top. Her black chunky round-toe shoes have an on-trend lug sole that is the exact same colour as her cardigan. The fun round bag also matches, which creates further outfit cohesion. The double-breasted blazer in cool-toned browns and black contrasts with the earthy camel in a modern way. A chain link necklace and oversized hoops add polished bling. And as always, Jacqueline’s cropped ‘do adds a good dose of edge.

The elegant checked coat is the star of the show here, with the funky boots coming in as a close second. Jacqueline dresses up a dark grey midaxi sweater dress by pairing it with a beautiful black and white check maxi coat. The tailored fit adds lots of structure and strong graphic pattern. Our blogger then adds a pair of tall chunky black boots with bright green tips and soles. The one-of-a-kind boots add a playful touch. The black bag goes well with the coat and footwear. Dainty necklaces, hoop earrings and red lippy finish off the look.

Cheerful pattern mixing with buffalo plaid and animal print. Jacqueline is wearing black skinny trousers with split hemline as a fun design detail. She’s paired the pants with a hip-length cardigan worn as a sweater. The chunky-knit grey and black animal print adds textural interest. So does the cosy shacket in bright tomato red and black. Repeating the black in the shacket and cardigan creates visual cohesion. The shacket and cardi are the same length, which eliminates too many horizontal cutting lines. Also note how the black vertical border on the cardigan blends into the black pants, thus drawing the eye up and down, and creating vertical integrity. The black sneakers peaking out from under the trousers have a similar effect. Jacqueline completes the look with an oversized canvas bag, layered necklaces, thin oversized hoops and dark red lipstick.

Jacqueline goes Sporty Luxe in vibrant cobalt blue and apple green. She has tucked a white slogan tee into full-length straight-legged dressy trousers. The tee casualizes the look, which is juxtaposed by popping over a tailored double-breasted blazer with gold buttons. The bright blue and green add tons of Modern to the Modern Classic blazer and trouser combo. Our blogger then pairs them with super chunky athletic sneakers for a Sporty Luxe vibe. The yellow stripe on the side of the sneakers subtly brings another colour into the mix, as does the structured crossbody in pretty pink and orange. Her dark lipstick adds drama, and our blogger’s short curls add bouncy softness.

Jacqueline Andrea Smith - 6

Our blogger is a big fan of knit leisurewear sets, and I for one am a big fan of this yellow and sand striped set. It’s a fun variation on the matching sweater and skirt set. The cheerful sunny yellow combined with the cosy softness and nonchalant drape make for a perfect combo. The white sneaks peeking out from under the full-length wide-leg trousers add a sporty touch. The sweater’s deep V-neck creates vertical integrity that counteracts the horizontal lines of the stripes. The semi-tuck hints at a waist, and adds some structure. It also offsets the horizontal lines in an interesting way. Throwing over a tailored Modern Classic trench in sand is unexpected, and dresses up this casual look. So do the pearl necklace, polished earrings and lipstick.

I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of Jacqueline’s vibrant and fun outfits. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to check out her Instagram for more style inspiration.

Reflecting on My Style in 2021

During a very sad year, my style was therapeutic, relaxing, and gave me joy. I was happy with my style and had great luck in my shopping. I worry about a lot of things, but my wardrobe, my style, and getting dressed each day are not among them. I shop in an organized emotional way, I listen to my feelings, and I laugh a lot. Here’s a ten-point wrap up of my year in style.

1. Style Goals

I set fourteen style goals in January and checked in on their progress in June. Surprisingly, I managed to achieve twelve of them. Unfortunately, I did not manage to add flowing midi skirts to my wardrobe. Nor did I find the right blush pink wool coat. That’s okay. These items will roll over into my 2022 shopping list.

Of all my goals, I am most happy about prioritizing quality, expressing my style through my happy colours and favourite patterns, and for making the most sustainable and ethical wardrobe decisions that I can manage.

2. Authenticity

My big picture style goal is to achieve SIMPAT style, which captures what I believe the most important elements of an effective and enjoyable personal style are. My focus is on the ‘A’ for AUTHENTICITY which means sporting a style that feels genuine and true to who I am as a person. So far, with each passing year, my style is a more honest representation of myself. Ongoing soul searching keeps me realistic about what I can wear, afford, and store. I take to heart the types of looks that make me happy and less happy. To that point, I’ve learned that playful and sentimental components are all important for my style because they amplify feelings of contentment. Recognizing, accepting, and putting into practice what is authentic is what gives my style its longevity, and balance. It gives me the confidence to do my own thing, and keeps things fun.

3. Goodbye Lipstick and Tinted Moisturizer

Twenty-two months into the global pandemic, and lipstick and tinted moisturizer are a distant memory. I’ve switched to lip balm, and sport well-cared for, yet naked skin. I cleanse, moisturize, apply sunscreen, and leave it at that. I do wear mascara, tightline, and eyebrow pencil daily, because I like to accentuate my eyes.

4. Fab New Eyewear

This was a big year for vision correction. I now sport two pairs of specs that I switch throughout the day. One pair is for distance, and the other are occupational progressives for my work station and eating meals at the table. I’m thrilled to report that I have adjusted to the vision corrections and LOVE my two new pairs of specs. The light blue pair are for distance, and the transparent pink pair are for my work station. Big thanks to hubs Greg for choosing them with skill and precision. He always knows what works best for me. I’m modelling them for the forum here.

5. Many Fun Dresses

I had bad luck finding suitable skirts this year, but hit the jackpot with dresses. I found fab ones at incredible discounted prices for Summer and cooler days and have worn them a lot. They are super comfortable and a pleasure to wear. I love wearing dresses. With our Seattle Summers getting hotter every year, I can see my dress capsule growing. I’m more of a dress gal than a skirt gal, so it’s just as well. I’m not giving up on skirts just yet, though.

6. Great On-Trend Jeans

I tend to sport the trends in bottoms with the classics for tops. Jeans are one of the trendiest components of my style so I am particularly fussy about them. I passed on and demoted five pairs of jeans this year and replaced them accordingly. Relaxed and wider bottom silhouettes is what I’m feeling, and these dead right options fit the bill, The white pair is torn and shredded in the stock photo, but is not in person.

7. Excellent Footwear Additions

It’s challenging to find comfortable footwear that looks great, fits well, and goes the distance. As a result, I don’t plan my shoe purchases. Instead (and budget permitting) I strike while the iron is hot and commit to the footwear that finds me. Sometimes I commit to several pairs a year, and sometimes I don’t find anything. This year I looked into footwear brands that have worked well for me in the past, but that I’d forgotten about. I’m back to wearing Cole Haan loafers and J.Crew boots with happy feet.

I also had great fun wearing a pair of custom-made blush leather Converse hi-tops, complete with gold eyelets and a “youlookfab” embroidery. They were my most worn Spring shoes.

8. Best Ever Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Very, very unexpectedly, I had the best NAS of my life, and I was in the Netherlands during most of it. With forum member Gryffin’s help, I nabbed a Hugo Boss suit in my size, and it’s my favourite pants suit of all time. I’ve worn it to several client meetings, and felt like a million bucks. The suit has set the standard for pants suits in my wardrobe, and I would like to get another at some point. I’m modelling the suit for the forum here.

The cream barrel bag and matching lug-sole high-shaft boots are the most worn shoe and bag complement of the year. With weatherproofing spray, the boots are perfect for wet and cold Seattle weather.

9. Fun Wild Cards

After saying that I would never wear a jumpsuit again, I fell in love with an awfully fun bubblegum pink boiler suit because it very fondly reminded me of the ’80s. I had to eat my words and remember “never to say never” when it comes to fashion and style. Pics here.

Although checked and plaid pants are signature to my style, I don’t usually wear them wide and floppy. But when forum member Tanya said that a cream, orange and turquoise plaid pair reminded her of me, I had to try them. I love this retro golfing look, and already had the support act in the right colours in my wardrobe. Dramatic, unique, and comfortable. Pics here.

I have a complicated relationship with corduroy, which makes adding a pair of relaxed cream corduroy pants to my bottoms capsule quite the wild card. I’m thoroughly enjoying the look and have worn them quite a bit.

Committing to a pair of orange vegan leather wide cropped pants was particularly wild, yet they fit seamlessly into my wardrobe. They are super comfy, pack a punch, and feel festive for the holidays. They perfectly matched what I was wearing when I tried them on in the dressing room.

10. Hair Adventure

Just for fun and because I enjoy a hair project, I’m growing out my hair. It will stay short, but not COVID-pixie-short. I’d like a little extra hair to play with, and miss my longer waves. I might darken the blonde a bit too. I’ve gone twelve weeks with only trimming the back, and so far so good. My hair grows slowly so it’s a lesson in patience. But I’m determined and will cope with less sharp looking hair for a while as it grows out. I’m excited for the end results, and will try to enjoy the in-between stages too.

All this has paved the way for clear-cut 2022 style goals, which I will share early in the new year.

Outfit Formula: Leather Skirts

I recently wrote about creating outfits with leather pants, because leather bottoms are having a fashion moment. Today it’s about leather skirts. Most of the leather is faux leather, which is more affordable than real leather and easier to launder. Some faux leather is sustainably and ethically produced. Solids are the norm.

Here are some leather skirt examples:

Here are some easy leather skirt outfit ideas across a range of skirt silhouettes. Feel free to change the palettes to those better suited to your style.

1. Columned Fabness

Combine a leather skirt with a sweater and tall boots in a similar colour to create a column. If creams and beiges are not for you, try light grey, toffee, burgundy, or another colour. The trick here is to get the boots in the same colour as the skirt and sweater. The chunky sweater is semi-tucked to hint at a waistline for structure. Feel free to wear a fine-gauge sweater instead. Pop a coat over the top, add a bag to match, and Bob’s your uncle.

2. Playfully Tailored

Combine a straight or A-line leather skirt with a tucked silk blouse. Wear pretty dressy shoes. Pumps or refined boots are a good option. Throw a classic tailored knee-length coat over the top. Add a dressy crossbody bag and optional hosiery. The softness of the silky blouse creates an interesting contrast with the texture of the leather. The addition of cobalt is yummy with the orange-y cognac skirt, while the plaid adds a traditional touch. White shoes pick up the white of the patterned coat.

3. Simply Pleated

Here’s one for those who like hard-edged looks. Combine a black or grey pleated leather skirt with a soft and slouchy V-neck sweater in black or grey. If the outfit needs some structure, semi-tuck the sweater. Add tailored black heeled boots, or flat stompy boots. A graphic tee and denim jacket could work well too. Pop a long or short coat over the lot.

Simply Pleated

4. Casually Pretty

And a casual rendition to complete the set. Combine an A-line leather skirt with a short fitted sweater. This on-trend one has a wide welt to accentuate the waist, and puffy sleeves that amp up the pretty. Finish things off with short chunky boots that pick up the colours of the outfit. Here the cream top, boots and socks match. The choice of cream is also soft and pretty. The black hat matches the black inserts of the boots. Pop a short or long coat over the top, and add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

Link Love: Holiday Medley 2021

It’s tradition to ring out the Link Love year with a collection of style-related stories that didn’t quite fit into the themed Link Love posts we published throughout the year, but are worth a look anyway. Happy browsing!

We”ll be back in the new year with more Link Love posts. In the meantime, I want to wish you a lovely festive season with lots of happy moments.

Fab Links from Our Members

Shevia is always happy to see an article that encourages thrifting.

This vlogger’s review of trends for Fall/Winter 2021 struck a chord with Runcarla: “It wasn’t so much the images she used to illustrate her points, but rather the rational around the approaches that I found thought-provoking and of interest.”

UmmLila wanted to share this article from W Magazine on all sorts of people who embrace a style uniform.

She also thought this $69 little black dress made out of carbon emissions collected from steel mills was interesting.

Vildy found this video with “4 hacks to look elegant when you’re lazy” thought-provoking: “I happen not to relate to ‘effortless style’. I put a lot of effort into my outfit creation and I want that to show. I was struck by her focus on making intentional choices. That definitely sums up my style: Intentional. I needed that concept.”

The Bixie haircut trend is all over the internet. BlueJay loves it “because it’s ’90s hair with Ashley Judd, Lady Diana, Winona Ryder, Drew Barrymore, and Meg Ryan all sporting the look and now it’s back!”

Weekly Roundup: Assorted Items

Here’s the last roundup of 2021. With ongoing supply chain challenges, it’s a wonder there is stock of anything at all.
