Suz found an interesting article about Debbie Harry at age 69. Note the photo of the singer sporting high-waisted jeans and a partly buttoned-up denim jacket as a shirt. Right on trend again.

Although Angie found the Fall 2015 runway shows harder to navigate this season with no clear direction of the upcoming trends, she really enjoyed the the way Bally and Prada remixed their colours at Milan Fashion Week this week. This is great inspiration for Spring. Why wait!

Angie also wanted to share this video that shows how the “ideal” female body type has evolved over the years. Plus a hilarious quote from Tina Fey in which she pulls together an impossible laundry list of what every woman is excepted to look like these days.

Gryffin lets us know that YLF forum member Deborah was recently featured on Sally’s blog. So fun!

CocoLion loves street style, and thinks The Impression does a great job of presenting things in an organized manner. She adds that Carolines Mode is probably her favourite site for street style because they exercise some editorial powers over what they publish.

Laurinda was happy to see this Bill Cunningham video of people wearing all shades of blue, cheering us up during this cold Winter. And he recommends mixing blue with black (which, Laurinda adds, she heard at YLF first!).

Variables That Affect the Size of Your Wardrobe

Just like there is no one way to be stylish, there is no one wardrobe size to rule them all. There are at least seven variables that impact the number of items in your wardrobe.

Climate

You will need a larger variety of clothing, footwear and accessories when you live in a four season climate. The harsher your Winter, the greater your need for specialized footwear, knitwear, outerwear and Winter accessory capsules. Living in a milder and less extreme climate makes it easier to wear the same items more frequently throughout the year.

Lifestyle

A smaller wardrobe tends to work well with a casual dress code that is more or less the same throughout the week, especially if you spend part of the day in workout clothes. You’ll usually need a larger wardrobe if your work attire is dressier than what you wear over the weekend. And an even larger wardrobe if you require formal attire for the theatre, work events, weddings and the like.

Need for Variety

Some people’s need for variety is greater than others. If you enjoy wearing a large variety of silhouettes across a range of colours, you’ll have a moderate to large wardrobe. If you’re more of a wardrobe minimalist who requires little outfit variety, wearing the same fast fall back outfits most days, you’ll have a smaller wardrobe.

Some thoroughly enjoy wearing a piece that is brand new because it feels more special than wearing the same older items day after day. Maximizing this enjoyment leads to a larger wardrobe because you’re buying new items more frequently.

Closet Space

The size of your wardrobe might also be governed by the size of your storage space. Some use more than one closet area, and convert rooms into walk-in wardrobes. The larger your storage space, the easier it is to fill it with items, which leads to a large wardrobe.

Purging Guilt

Purging guilt can lead to a larger wardrobe if you have a hard time purging, but continue adding to your wardrobe. I also know people who struggle to purge and shop infrequently for this reason.

Budget

Like closet space, budget is a constraint that naturally limits the size of a wardrobe. But this doesn’t mean that someone with a large budget will necessarily have a large wardrobe. They may prefer to spend their budget on fewer, higher-end items. Or they may just prefer a smaller wardrobe and spend less than their budget allows. The converse can also be true, where some people with a more limited budget can buy many items inexpensively on markdown or at thrift stores.

Fashion: Hobby or Chore?

Enjoying fashion, the trends, shopping, and the art of putting together your style is a fun hobby for some people. When this is the case, wardrobes are often moderate or large in size. Those who care less about fashion and style, and don’t enjoy shopping, often have smaller wardrobes. There are also those who enjoy fashion and style immensely, and part of the fun is keeping within a specific manageable quantity of pieces (either a small or moderate wardrobe). This makes the process of finding the piece as fabulous as wearing the piece itself.

So what size should your wardrobe be? Too large, and items will go unworn as you forget about them or struggle to find them. You might end up with an unsightly closet that is bursting at the seams. Too small, and you will have laundry bottlenecks, get bored repeating the same items, and possibly lack the appropriate outfits for some occasions. Items will also wear out more quickly as you wear them frequently.

The ideal size is somewhere in between. There isn’t a universal answer, of course, but if you are thoughtful about editing and making additions to your wardrobe, you will reach the size that makes sense for your budget, needs and lifestyle.

Nordstrom Roundup: Spring Refreshers

Spring has been slow to hit retail stores this year, which might be due to the unseasonably cold weather in the Midwest and on the East Coast. That said, there’s a good enough assortment to begin planning your Spring wardrobes. These items caught my eye and some of them are on sale. Be sure to browse through all the colour options.

Go to the collection page if you would like to see descriptions alongside the pictures of the items.

I recently bought the Halogen monochrome oblong scarf because it looks great with my new turquoise Furla satchel. It’s been years since I wore a scarf as a more decorative component in an outfit, so I’m looking forward to the change.

Creative and Polished Mum-on-the-Go

Cynthia Yang (44) is a full-time Mum of three girls in the Metro Detroit area who writes about fashion, food, fitness and everything in between on her blog My Rose Colored Shades. Our blogger loves skinnies, colour, pattern and heels, which she switches up with flats and sneakers. Her style is creative, fun, polished, practical and relatable. She enjoys mixing trends with Modern Classics, and likes to add a bit of urban edge here and there.

“It’s been a gradual process but I’ve learned to let go of silly fashion rules that have been ingrained in my head ever since fashion became part of my vocabulary. I’ve been able to break out of those constraints and take risks, more so in the last five years than ever before. In the process, I’ve realized that having a sense of style is not about following rules but about being comfortable enough in your skin that you are able to honestly understand what shapes and colors highlight your best features, inside and out. At the very core, my style has always been classic, minimalist and selectively trendy.”

A stylish and easy-to-throw-on outfit that gets its pizzazz from the fun colour combo and plaid scarf. Tucking the high-contrast chambray shirt into coated skinny jeans lengthens the leg line. Popping over a hip-length blazer with sleek lines also enhances the vertical integrity of this look. The camel colour looks chic against the light blue, and dresses up this casual outfit. The waxed skinnies add textural interest and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. There’s some subtle pattern mixing going on with the plaid scarf and leopard print pumps. A simple, dark blue satchel and Cynthia’s trademark rose-coloured shades are the finishing touches.

Polish and hard edge-lite go together seamlessly in this monochromatic skirt look. The exposed asymmetric zipper, leather panel and cut-away detailing transform the Modern Classic skirt into a trendy hard-edged rendition. Cynthia further plays up the hard-edge vibe by accessorizing with a large black tote and sporting black caged wedge sandals with gold hardware. The cut-outs and shorter skirt length create a long lean line. Opting for a relatively unstructured popover shirt in a drapey fabric softens the outfit. The blue and white stripe adds a fun, preppy juxtaposition. Dainty jewellery and Cynthia’s hair worn down provide further feminine softness.

Cheeky Sporty Luxe with feminine charm. The slouchy navy cargo pants are the perfect length on our 5′ 4″ blogger. Together with the slim, sharp-shouldered schoolboy blazer and striped pullover they are the tomboy elements in this look. The moss green with white stripe sweater is unexpected against the navy. And don’t you just love the navy trim around the collar. Such a great touch. Throwing in a croc-embossed tomato red clutch and heels adds ladylike vivacity. Cynthia has an impressive shoe collection, and these red studded criss-cross ankle strap pumps work great with the elasticated pant hems. A simple lariat necklace and dainty bracelet echo the preppy gold buttons on the blazer.

Cynthia looks terrific in these denim-y shades of blue. For a relaxed weekend look she’s wearing distressed boyfriend jeans with a pale blue denim popover shirt. The dark trim on the shirt creates outfit depth. Rolling the jeans showcases girly pointy toe flats. The blush colour and criss-cross straps give them a sweet ballerina-esque vibe. The webbing striped belt adds a playful preppy touch. Our blogger is also mixing metals with three bracelets, two necklaces and earrings. The pendant mimics the shape of the earrings, and by keeping all the pieces dainty and refined there’s no visual overload.

Cynthia has a knack for putting together stylish and on trend outfits that are practical for an always busy Mum-on-the-Go. Here are her top two tips for achieving this:

“I think the key to looking stylish and on trend without being a fashion victim, is to anchor your outfit with at least one item that you’re completely comfortable and confident in. I would never wear an outfit that’s out of my comfort zone from head to toe. If I did, I would probably feel like a fashion clown on display and wouldn’t be able to pull it off. For example, if I’m trying a trendy color that’s not an every day color for me, I’ll work it in via accents and accessories at first. If I’m trying to mix a set of patterns and textures for the first time, then I’ll make sure there is a cohesiveness in the colors that makes me comfortable. Be realistic about your lifestyle and determine how you can incorporate a trend in a way that works for you, and if it doesn’t work, don’t wear it.”

This is a fab example of how to wear a statement dress two different ways! Pairing the painted plaid dress with a long cascading cardigan with subtle ruffles emphasizes the beautiful asymmetric lines of the frock. Adding accessories in earthy tones like the braided leather belt and light brown booties makes for a great casual country chic look. Switch out the cardi for a sharp-shouldered tuxedo blazer, blue booties and a vivid royal blue clutch and you get a dressy and sharp city look. Also note how the round pendant in the first look adds softness that matches the relaxed vibe of the outfit, whereas the spike pendant in look two accentuates the urban edge.

This is my favourite outfit because the sage green with blue and black has stolen my heart. You don’t see sage green all that often, and it’s very flattering on our blogger. Cynthia is sporting a casual leggings with tunic sweater combination that is both practical and relatable. The moto and zipper detailing on the scuba leggings create hard edge and tonal texture. They also complement our blogger’s black hair. The chunky knit sweater with oversized collar adds more textural interest, and adds back some softness. The denim-y blue colour of the pointy toe stacked heel ankle boots is an unexpected choice, but it works beautifully with the sage green. A silver pendant and classic black strap watch are the accessories of choice. Finally, the relaxed, bright blue satchel ties it all together.

Polished Boho with Snakeskin Booties

A new outfit from Alexandra Grant of To Vogue or Bust, who we introduced to YLF in November 2014.

The white jeans and eye-catching snakeskin ankle boots are the stars of this texture-rich polished boho look. Alexandra has layered a black tee under a shorter light grey sweater. This creates horizontally cutting lines across the body, which she balances out by popping over a long grey coat in a false plain. Sporting low-contrast high-vamped footwear further lengthens the leg line by visually joining the foot to the jeans. The Western-style ankle boots, slouchy woven leather bag, relaxed layering, and Alexandra’s wide-brimmed felt hat and loose locks bring a boho-lite vibe to this look. The crisp skinnies and our blogger’s impeccable make-up add effective polish.
