About your wardrobe and personal style

Name your style!

JG's post and Angie's comment about what "edgy" means got me thinking about how eac of us might define our own style, and what new elements we might want to add as we continue to evolve our sense of fashion, our wardrobe, and our selves.

To make it fun, I am challenging each of us to list here 3 words you think others would describe your style as it is right now. Then list 3 words you might want to push your style toward, or words you wish other people would use to describe your style.

Here's the catch: it can only be ONE-WORD descriptions. No postscripts, no buts, no ands! :)

I'll go first!

My current style:
1. Polished
2. Cheery
3. Classic

My style goals:
1. Pretty
2. Clever
3. Sophisticated

As Angie says, "over to you". :)

You lot are SO CUTE. What a fun thread! I LOVE the single word aspect of this challenge. Rocks my world.

Would you like to hear my take on your styles too?

Posted 4 months ago

What a silly question Angie. You don't think we're going to say NO do you? :)

I'm very curious to hear what your goals are. I mean, what more can you ask for? Your style conveys who you are perfectly.

Seconding Maya's comments across the board. :)

Angie, I think I speak for all of us when I say we would love to hear your assessment of us, and of yourself! If it's easier, you can keep it to one word for us, instead of three. :)

I like the one-word challenge because it really makes you distill it down to its essence. I thought you might appreciate it too.

Joy, what is "Staging Your Comeback"? Now you've got me intrigued!

Heehee, so many great descriptors. Good thing I insisted on 'no additions' otherwise I would be changing my answer totally! :)

You guys have some great adjectives going on! By posting later, I can filch some of yours ;)

Let's see:

My current style:
- Eclectic
- Casual
- Funky

My style goals:
- Effortless
- Eclectic
- Modern

Posted 4 months ago

I really don't know how others would describe my style (Angie??)

I want to work towards:
-effortless
-chic
- flattering

Posted 4 months ago

My current style:
-- urban
-- funky
-- polished, or maybe "classic" is a better word

My style goals:
-- edgy
-- artistic
-- and still urban. That one I'm keeping!

The part of this that interests me is how my style goals reflect where I'm trying to go in life. Does anyone else find that too?

I love this Kristen! And it's so fun to see what everyone says about their style and what they want their style to be. Here's mine:

3) Classic

I would like it be:

1) Creative
2) Adventurous
3) Natural

Maya, where are YOUR adjectives. Go on. Your turn after me. Then I’ll comment on anyone who wants my 2 cents:

How others would describe my style in no particular order:

o Urban
o Trendy
o Sophisticated

My style goals:

o Urban
o Trendy
o Sophisticated

Heh, Angie! I see you've got your style all sorted out.

And now that you've met me, I'd love to hear your opinion :)

Posted 4 months ago

Angie, of course I'd love your take, too. (My words are up near the top of the thread.) I'm glad you are playing along!

Kristen, thanks for starting this thread. Defining my individual style is something that I find pretty tricky - and as a former Literature major I hate to admit being stumped by anything verbal! It's even more challenging to limit it to three words.

My first thoughts were that my individual style is cautious and conservative, but looking at what I'm wearing now, I don't think that those descriptors are accurate of what I wear, even though I'm very cautious and slow to try out a new trend.

I toyed with putting "modest" or "playful" in the "how others view me" section, but I think those are better descriptors of how *I* view my style. (I don't like to be overly exposed, but lately I am having SO MUCH FUN mixing colors and styles that I never tried pre-YLF.)

Kari - I definitely wouldn't describe your style as "cautious" - your outfits look very vibrant and creative to me!

And Angie, I'd love your opinion!

Posted 4 months ago

Kari, I think you nailed your description in your first 3 words! See, this is why I said only 3 -- then we start to over-think it. LOL!

Angie, I love that your goals are the same as what you currently are; to me, that means not only are satisfied with your style, you want to continue pushing yourself so you maintain it. You're not stuck in a rut, you're working to keep yourself fresh.

What a fun thread! I'm noticing that there's two issues here-- descriptive terms for our styles like urban, classic etc. versus more general terms like polished and effortless which can apply for all styles. Is it supposed to be one or the other? I'm going to try hard not to use the second group because of course I want to be polished, effortless and all of that. I've definitely got to play:

as seen by others:
o current
o cute
o bold

goals:
o sophisticated
o bold
o current

This was actually really hard. ;)

Cathy, it would be very sad if that was NOT the case. I’d be a useless fashion stylist! (Thanks, Kristen!)

I actually found it hard to stick to 3 words, but felt that the three I chose were best if I HAD to choose three.

Here we go:

o Kristen – a great description of your current style and you totally ARE pretty. Achieved! What do you mean by “clever”?

o Lauren N – I don’t believe I’ve seen your style. Or have I missed it?

o Joy – you are spot on and have already achieved your goals. You clever little sausage.

o Kari – also spot on and you are extremely polished already.

o Michelle – you are NOT a conservative dresser. Look at you rock those leggings! A colourful modern – classic, absolutely. And you make it look every bit as effortless. I don’t know HOW you do it.

o Marianna – from what I’ve seen, I agree with your assessment. Well done.

o Dawn – another spot on description. I’d have added fun!

o Cathy – casual and funky and great descriptions of your style and I’d have added bohemian FOR SURE. You’re already totally modern.

o Khris – I’d have said casual and funky too. And quite daring! Wearing volume when few others would. That scores big time.

o Laura – you are completely urban, classic AND funky, and have completely achieved your edgy style goal. Super!

o Christine – a very accurate description, and you’re natural deluxe. Another achieved goal!

o Patience – nice descriptions. I’d have added trendy and you are absolutely sophisticated.

OK, I'll play (Angie, there are so many requests for your take, how are you going to get them all in...of course, I'd like your assessment as well :) )

Here is how others see me:
-Sporty
-Modern
-Colorful

My goals:
-Chic
-Modern
-Unique

This is the most I've used my brain all day...thanks!

Edit - wow Angie, you're on the ball...you were posting at the same time as I was struggling with adjectives :P Thanks for all you do for us!!!

Posted 4 months ago

OK, without thinking too hard, here are my words. This is really hard. Angie, please tell me your thoughts!

Others:
Casual
Creative
Pleasant

My goals:
Creative
Sophisticated
Independent

Posted 4 months ago

Angie, I wasn't thinking that having style goals different from your current style was mutually exclusive with being a good stylist! Actually, that has me wondering -- how long have you had your current style set? Do you see yourself evolving within that set, or maybe trying something different in the future? Anyhow, I do think you are a great stylist :)

Oh, and I did have "bohemian" on my list, but replaced it with "casual." Good call, and thanks for your feedback!

I'm doing the happy dance, Angie. You've made my day!

Kristen, "Staging Your Comeback" is a book by Christopher Hopkins. It's a best selling guide for women over 45 to help them reinvent their style probably after years of not having one. In one section called "Discovering Your Image Profile" he has an exercise in which you are to discover your ideal personal style partly by choosing "your image buzz words" for how you see yourself. The word lists describe styles that are classic, casual, romantic, dramatic, innovative, alluring, or a combination. I found it difficult to do.
Example of list for Dramatic: Stunning, dazzling, glamorous, gorgeous, distinctive, exquisite, theatrical, striking, eye-catching, sensational, magnificant, savvy, and chic.

Posted 4 months ago

And more:

o Dani – good descriptions. I’d have added cheerful and preppy. Your outfits “smile” at me. Just like Kristen’s. And your look IS modern.

o Brianna – casual and pleasant for sure! You are so cute to use the word “pleasant”. Love it! And your hairstyle gives you an edge without knowing it.

Cathy, you are adorable! I’ve been in the international rat race of a fashion game for 17 years. It’s therefore always been a prerequisite to be trendy. (And I love following fads and trends too). But I stepped up the sophistication factor when I turned 35. Needed to add simpler, sleeker and more “grown up” lines. As for urban – never been anything else.

Will I try something different? My style is ALWAYS evolving. Every season. But the goals are the same. Some seasons I’m a little more edgy, sometimes a little more retro, sometimes a little more romantic. When I’m older, I intend to become more modern-classic. That will feel right too.

Ho ho, very funny Angie :)

I have been thinking of what to put on my list because I wasn't really sure.

Others:

-Young
-Artsy
-Urban

I know I can only pick 3 but I also notice lots of people see boho in me, which I really don't. I have a few individual boho pieces, but 90% of my wardobe is not boho and I do not really consider it a part of my style, or at least not an intentional one. I'm not sure if that's really how others see me or if I have just posted a disproportionate amount of boho stuff on YLF.

Goals:

-Eclectic
-Innovative
-Adventurous

By adventurous, I mean that I am willing to wear styles that most others are afraid to. This has been the hardest part of my style evolution, since I am often afraid to wear these styles myself! But I think I have come a long way towards that goal from where I started.

Posted 4 months ago

Oooh, this is just so much fun to read! It definitely made my day.

Angie, my new goal is to have you call me "clever little sausage". That's when I'll know I've achieved clever! :)

Posted 4 months ago

Golly! I spotted this thread this afternoon and wanted to ponder my style words and now it has exploded :-D

This has been quite hard for me too and coincidentally the question has been weighing on my mind the past few weeks. I've been experimenting a lot lately and trying to find ways to interpret these new trends in what might be "my style". This is what others have to said to me about my style:
- Urban
- Eclectic
- Polished(?)

Is this right?

My goals:
- Urban
- Edgy Eclectic :-D
- Sophisticated

Angie, if it's not too late, I'd love to hear what you think!
