This skirt was a gift and I wasn't sure how to wear it. I followed Angie's suggestions on how to dress down your formal wear. I also had in mind Imogen's suggestion for elongating your legs by creating a column of color on your lower half.

So nicely done! That is a KILLER denim jacket!
With the light colored top, you're employing the "column" trick with the open jacket....making you look long and lean (and lovely).

I confess, I couldn't do a "dress down" today. But I like the challenge and want to try it. For now I'll repost one of the WritersFest pics because it was a sort of dressing-up dressing-down, if you know what I mean. But I do have another outfit in mind that more accurately fits the bill and will try to get pics in the next few days!

You look lovely! I think the outfit could use a bit of something to break up the neutral - perhaps a colorful belt? But, I'm probably splitting hairs.

I love the skirt with the denim. I love the boots. Not sure I love them together, but I'm fixated on bookending right now (and of course searching for boots the color of my hair).

@sarah, I know what you mean. I was using Imogen's suggestion, but I felt "nude" from the waist down. It felt like a little too much. I am generally not a fan of light colored bottoms, so this skirt was a double challenge.

@bella, the boots are new. They are part of my Angie approved NYC meet up loot. I had seen them online but wasn't too excited by them. They are really great in person.

Haven't been able to get a photo but I had to reverse the challenge and wear jeans with a black lace shirt over black shell and pearls and black patent peeptoe booties with a bit of a heel. I got lots of compliments including Mr. J.
Thank you for this challenge. I would probably never have worn the lace shirt with distressed Hudsons if not looking for a dressy top.

All the looks above just ROCK!!! I love how it shows the individuality and style different ladies bring to the same concept - especially with the denim jacket being the 'baseline' of so many looks, it really shows how a different shoe, bag, hair can so strongly influence the overall look. Great idea Rita!!!

I don't post many pix here (kind of naughty since i give my opinion so freely) and this challenge seemed a fun one to do. Yesterday i wore the first look - i was wondering what to wear, when i read your challenge i thought 'aha! that black slubbed silk skirt with denim jacket, bass boots, little butterick top.......' Especially appropriate for grocery shopping and later Macy's/Nordies' with the husband.

Look two i wore a week or so ago - the husband has been voicing 'anti-androgyny' sentiments recently, so i've been tarting it up a bit. The little Ann Ferriday top is very femme and comfy (soft and super stretchy), but it's form fitting, almost metallic in it sheen, and has a hand-sized patch of beading right at the decolletage. I think the overall look ended up more casual than ritzy. Another running around doing errands look, and it worked out fine from the practical angle. Happy Saturday everyone! steph

These are perfect examples, Steph! In the first, the denim and boots keep this down to earth, and in the second the lace top boosts a casual look to dressy territory. I love your scarf on you bag; I've been trying to do this lately and it hasn't looked right. How could something so simple be difficult? Any guidelines?

Whooo, loving everyone's looks here! I've already commented on Khris's on her thread, but Steph, I really like both yours, as well. I love your attention to detail; you go far beyond basic shapes and fabrications to look at all embellishments and accessories. It pays off! You seem to end up looking funky but feminine every single time (even in so-called androgynous outfits).

Thank you Lynne & Suz! hmm, re: scarves on bags.....well, first just choose a scarf that goes with your outfit. then, (this sounds corny, but it's true) a scarf that goes with the bag. for instance, i think the above scarf works because the color and pattern go with the purse but also it's not so big that it overwhelms the purse. the scarf i'm wearing around my neck would just be too long. i also find it helps to tie the scarf on pretty neatly - i folded this one accordion style, side to side, slipped it through the ring and knotted once. scarves will 'work' tied on one part of a purse but not another, so experiment. also, as a rule the smaller the knot (or none at all) the better. hth!!

thanks to her 'bra post', i can assure you that we are torso twins! combined with my face and hair, you'd have to go pretty darn far to tone down that dose of girliness. given a choice i would have chosen to look less 'femme', but now that i'm older i'm used to it and have fun playing off of it.

i think it's part of the truth that personal style starts with an objective (ish) view of what your body looks like, and uses that as part of the presentation. Thank you - interesting points!!! steph
