Easy Espadrilles

June 5th, 2007

Espadrilles are forever fashionable. They’re the perfect ultra casual (yet sophisticated) Summer shoe. Their raffia-wrapped wedge heels make them particularly “of this fashion moment”, and this season there’s an array of styles and colors to choose from. But most of them are either too high or hopelessly uncomfortable.

So the quest to find a fashionable yet comfortable and affordable pair of shoes continues. While none of them make it to my “6 to 8 hour”  mark, there happen to be a few “4 hour” options around. They’re perfect with dresses, skirts and knee length walk shorts. Have a peek below and perhaps they’ll meet your all-day requirement. (And remember not to wear them in the rain).

I think every woman has a shoe suffer meter. The cuter the shoe, the higher my suffer meter goes. I love the look of a medium heel with a band that goes across the widest part of the foot (like the pink ones in this post). But they seem to be the most uncomfortable shoe for my foot. They give me blisters on my big toes! Sometimes a hidden padded bandaid solves that problem, but not always. Also, I pick my shoe for the day based on what kind of day I think I’ll be having. My job has me doing everything from sitting behind a desk all day, to driving around town and making several stops along the way. I save the more uncomfortable shoes for days that I’ll be desk bound. Once in a while, I get caught with the wrong shoe on my foot. I should keep a pair of comfy sandals in my car.

I bought my first pair of espadrilles last year and now I wonder why I waited so long! They look GREAT and with their thick sole, they are super comfortable. I wear them everywhere!

Is there such a thing as an espadrille flat? I’m already 6′2″ and don’t want any more than .5″ of a heel.

Steph — I’ve seen espadrilles with no wedge…their sole still has some thickness so you still get that great trim around the edges but there is no additional heel height. I’m sure that zappos would have some on their site.

Nicole — I hear you on the shoe suffering! I have a very high instep and most shoes just kill my feet after even a short amount of time. Because of this, I actually have (relatively!) few shoes! Finding the right fit AND cuteness is really, really hard.

I am curious as to why they don’t make more fashionable shoes that don’t have a heel? I personally can’t wear them because they hurt so much and it’s challenging to find footwear that is flat AND comfy. I think non-heel lovers should send an SOS to the fashion industry and request that they make many more flats than heels! :)
