I don’t think of my style as ‘original’. It fits easily into the categories of Modern Classic and Sporty Natural. And yet, I do have some style conventions that are signature.
Hats: year ‘round I wear hats. Berets (I have 4!) and beanies EVERY DAY in winter. Not only do they keep my head warm - they keep my hair back and out of my face without having to resort to a ponytail. The hat wearing continues through summer as a preventative measure to sun exposure, but I’ve also made it a signature of my style.
Sleeveless: genetics and fitness activities have given me good shoulders and relatively toned arms for a 64 yo. Long arms and a strong shoulder line make finding longer sleeves that fit a problem - especially with button downs. Going sleeveless solves that problem - though it’s a warm weather solution only.
Turtlenecks and popped collars: : maybe this is a short hair thing (cold neck?) but I love me a face framing turtleneck or popped collar. If I do wear a crew neck, I’ll often tie a scarf around my neck - so, maybe it is a cold neck thing?!
Cropped bottoms:: it’s hard to find inseams that are long enough, but even when I do, I might roll them to cropped length! I used to hate short pants, but with the variety of pants lengths seen out in the wild, I’ve outgrown my ‘poison eye’ and ankle baring bottoms are the length of choice.
Flat shoes/Converse sneakers:: flat footwear (no higher than 1 inch) works best for me, and I’m not into the chunky sole look. Converse sneakers are so perfect/comfortable for me that they are a ubiquitous part of my OOTD and definitely a signature of my style.
Red: is my ‘pop of colour’ and I’ve got a capsule of red, and red adjacent burgundy items that is becoming competitive with my neutrals. Maybe it’s a reaction to being told ‘redheads don’t wear red’ as a child, or maybe it’s a way of being seen as a very light, low contrast, older woman? Both? I say - Older and Bolder!
These are the common threads that make up my signature style. What are yours?
