YLF Gets a Style Refresh!

A few minutes ago I flipped the switch on a redesign that we've been working on for a while. Angie wrote about it on the blog:

We've been testing it for some time, but there are bound to be some teething problems when it's put through its paces by all YLF's visitors. Please let us know in the technical support category of the forum if you see anything strange.

Looks amazing Greg! One minute I was looking at the previous format and something happened that caused me to log out and then log back in and wow! I have to confess I was a little confused for a minute or two lol. Great job.

I think for me, the challenge is a grey font instead of a black one. My eyes are getting older, I guess!

Thanks for all the effort on the new look, Greg. It is clean and so far, seems to work well.

My only technical question (and it pre-dates this change), is that when posting a response, I find it a little frustrating to lose it immediately if one goes back to check something on another page. Is there away to have some working time on a "draft", with an ability to view other pages? Perhaps I am missing something that allows this.

Appreciate YLF every day. This is one of the most technically reliable sites I know.

It looks pretty but I preferred the previous one
I think this one is harder to read. The hierarchies are not really defined and clear. All fonts are similar in size and color, and everything is more squished together. I miss the white space to rest the eye and hierarchies so the reading flows more naturally.

I know you didn't ask our opinion but I said it :/ Maybe I have to get used to it. Thanks for your work!

Very nice spring refresh! I like the organization and clean look. I miss being able to expand the font size, though, on my Nook, which I could do previously.

When I first saw this, I thought for a second that YLF was gone and someone else had taken over the name. Was VERY glad to know y'all are still here!

Eliza, I know what you are saying. Sometimes I simply open two tabs in my browser and have YLF in both. One for my draft, and the other tab to look at whatever I wanted to refer to.

Like Deborah, I find the font easier to read (even with my old eyes). Very interesting that people vary so much that way; I am sure there are studies on it. But in any case, the clean and more spacious layout also helps.

Good idea, Suz. Think my challenge is that it becomes cumbersome on smaller devices, which I use all too often.

The new site looks slick, but I notice that it doesn't respond as gracefully when the browser window is resized horizontally. I keep ending up with cut off text and/or a scrollbar.

Nice job! I do fine the turquoise a tad bright for my sensitive eyes though. Sorry to be a killjoy. I preferred the soft grey of the old design as it didn't distract from reading.

ETA, I'm actually finding the bright colour extremely distracting after only 15 mins on the forum sorry

Hah. Sara. Your comment made me laugh. YES. It was quite a shock to see the new YLF this morning, I'm sure.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It's a huge undertaking to redesign a site as large and intricate as YLF - which Greg does completely on his own. He is AMAZING.
