Would you wear a tulle skirt?

I know the tulle skirt was around a few years ago. This week I saw it again when I passed by a local boutique. I really liked how this almost midnight blue colour toned down the princess vibe. The texture and colour were great.

I love the playfulness of it and would probably style it with a tee and denim or moto jacket and sneaks. Or as a petticoat.

But would I really wear it in my real life? I'm in my fourties, quite casual lifestyle (MOTG) and for my academic work environment smart casual and business casual is the norm. No tulle skirt! Lol. Girls night out, date nights (with DH), lunch with friends etc are not part of my weekly (or monthly!) schedule. And I'd rather meet with friend for a brisk walk dressed in gear. DH would think I'm crazy wearing a tulle skirt at home. lol. On the other hand, I work on getting my casual wardrobe more dressy (but functionality is first priority).

How about you? How would a tulle skirt fit into your lifestyle?

Not for me. Never have, never will. But I hate pouty skirts on my body, and I cannot think of an occasion in my life where it would feel right to wear one. However...If you love it, rock on!

Janet: Wouldn't you love that romantic vibe at your ranch? Joke aside. I agree, and I see your outfits as edgier and you describe your lifestyle as casual and down to earth. However, I'm pretty sure you would find a way to style a tulle skirt in a great way.

I think they are having another moment with all the ballet inspired details that are currently trending (or is that just me; I've started doing barre and craving pale pink nail polish).

I found a black skirt like yours. My sewing maven DD says it's not actually tulle, I can't remember the name she used. But tulle is stiff and scratchy and poufs out aggressively. This is heavier and softer to the hand and is more drapey. Which ups your wearing options (ie is easier to dress down).

I bought it for my other DD, who is a marine biologist in a rural village with a casual lifestyle, and yet has been craving one for ages. I don't think she's found an excuse to wear it yet. I found a cool Pinterest pin of a tulle skirt worn layered under a partly open kilt.

I've avoided your question so far, would I wear it? I was tempted, but it was me or her. But I'm telling myself that it's my style persona and age, not my lifestyle, that is the limiting factor.

In other words, you should try it!

I would wear this skirt in a cotton voile instead of tulle. Tulle is very playful...not me.

Much as i.love that midnight blue skirt, I live in cow country and that would be a sight out here. There was a time when I would have tried it with combat boots and a t-shirt to go grocery shopping, and then styled it differently for date night. Alas, those days have passed.

I think it's a fun look, but I'm a little too ... hmmm ... chubby to pull it off. And maybe ... hmmm ... mature? Not sure, but it's definitely something I'd wear in my imaginary life!

I'm nearing 40 and left behind tulle skirts at age 10, so no! It might work if you go to a ball and wear a long tulle skirt with an elegant jacket. But for a middle-aged woman's wardrobe it looks kind of childish. Maybe try playful accessories, like a sash for your bag or a fun necklace?

Oh, I love it for you! I mean, I completely get the attraction. I'd see you in this dressed down with denim and sneakers and a tee...I love the navy, too. Makes it a different thing than it would be in blush or white.

Would I wear it? Hmm. Probably not, although its being navy would give it more chances. If I wore it, I'd wear it on date nights/ nights out with friends. I have those a couple of times a month...so that might mean 6 wears in a year? It would take a long time to add up to the 30 wears we learned about from Jenn.

On the other hand...because it is navy, I might also wear it with the right cropped navy top or cropped brocade or sequin shell as evening wear. I might wear it with a fitted navy sweater or some other warmer top in winter for dressy occasions. It can be easily turned into a "party dress" and so might end up being my New Year's Eve outfit with some bling.

I have a striped Halogen skirt with a slight sheen like satin (Angie also has this skirt in black and white). I wear it throughout the year for "occasions" of various kinds and it has long closet longevity.

LOL, I live in a place where girls and women break out the tulle for festival-type events - cruiser bike rides, Halloween, concerts and so on. The tutus, etc. are intended as costumes but sometimes, I think, some people just want to wear tulle.

I actually have a black one that I got super cheap on clearance and have had for many years. I don't wear it a lot, I'm not brave enough to wear it casually, but I have worn it to weddings and Christmas parties and on cruises. I often wear it with a cropped silk wrap top that is a coral-ish color. It's a fun skirt to wear, makes me feel good and doesn't go out of style. I really should try the tee and moto look with it some day.

Only in a tongue in cheek way, like below. However my equivalent to your tulle is a sequinned pencil skirt (worn with a T and jean jacket). The second image below is one of the first I pined, and is still on my favourites list. I don't have one, though.

It's funny, even as a child, I never loved tulle. And I was a girlie girl, not a tomboy. But I guess I get my romantic touches in other ways (moody floral prints, etc.). I've never been a fan of anything "pouffy." It's always nice to know very definitively when you don't even want to bother trying an impractical trend!

Carla, I do love that sequined skirt -- alas, anything shiny and textured on my bottom half is a disaster.

Last month, when we took our family out for brunch, we saw some runners in a marathon for charity. One was wearing a bright pink, short tulle skirt. I don't know what that was supposed to represent. All of the other runners were in normal athletic attire. We had a good laugh, though.

I love the skirt, especially the color. If I were younger and had a waist, I would definitely wear it - to holiday parties, opera etc. You could really make it edgy with the right top and shoes.

If you can find an occasion to wear it, I'll bet you'd look great in it

I would wear the heck out of a tulle skirt! I have a ballerina-y skirt that is similar to tulle that I got at a YLF clothing swap years ago (waving at Mochi) and I love it for things like symphony concerts with a black turtleneck and leather jacket. I also have the pleated satin Halogen skirt that Suz linked (mine is black) and still wear and love it.

Right now, though, I feel like tulle is maybe on its last fashion legs so I am in search of a pleated metallic skirt!

I love tulle skirts and wish I had a purpose for them in my life! I do have a kind of tea stained/pinkish skirt that looks like tulle but is softer, swishier material, that I got from H&M years ago when I used to shop at H&M. I hold onto it because it fills that occasional need for me. I still covet a real tulle skirt but can't see me wearing it to work. Maybe for events? We do go to the theater or to classical music a lot, but I don't always dress up

I don't wear tulle, but only because pouffy skirts aren't great for my body shape. My version of this is plissé, which creates a more streamlined silhouette.

I have two skirts, one vintage white acetate and one in apricot silk chiffon. Both get worn, in summer with tees and sneakers and in winter with layered knitwear and boots. I find them surprisingly useful and versatile, a nice way to add drama to an everyday outfit.

These kinds of skirts have been a big thing in Japanese street style, where the girls wear them very casually with just about anything. If you find one you like, why not give it a try?

DD got me a black one at a rummage sale. "Mom, it's not too short!" But a size or two too big and a little long and never worn. It's buried at the back of my closet because it was a gift, but I should give it back to her.

I would wear other crazy things, but tulle is too young and too femme for me. Not something I could/would edge up. If I had a fragile ballerina build, I suppose I might consider it, but I've always leaned toward being sturdy.

I would wear it and I am almost 44. I don't think age makes it look ridiculous I think just wearing something that isn't you or comfortable to you can make things look off.
I love the skirt you posted. I have a silvery one from Anthro with small beaded owls on it and also a pink one and I style them differently depending where they will be worn. Wore one to a Christmas play last year and loved it.

Mine is an ivory deconstructed midi, which seems easier to wear than straightforward navy. I love it and pair it with a pirate girl tee for coffee shop meets. Fun but not silly or princess-y, you know?

If you're drawn to tulle, then run with it. Life is short, wear what makes you happy.

I had enough of tulle in grade school when fashion dictated full skirts with multiple tulle layers worn underneath so that they stood out. No these would not fit my life style.

I wore a purple tutu for a half marathon once bc. Don't really know why but the group I went up with were all doing it so I went along with it. It did cheer fellow runners. Dress up for races are seen quite a bit where I live.
As for normal tulle skirt like shown in this thread? I love the idea!

What beautiful skirts on SJP in those pics, Sally! I was still a bit too prudish at that time to watch that programme. I don't think I've ever worn a tulle skirt in my whole life and feel sad :(. It's a fantasy item for me, much like wishing I looked like Farrah Fawcett.
