Workshop: styling the slip skirt

A slip skirt has been on my wish list for a while, so when I spotted a nicely made soft beige one by Rachel Zoe (see Finds below) at our local Winners, I snapped it up!

Outfits #1, #2, and #4* were created from older items in my closet. #3 is a new cotton/cashmere sweater (tags still on) that I got hoping the beige would match the skirt and the yellow co-ordinate with the sling-backs. The beige and yellow aren’t perfect matches, but are they close enough? #5 working on a beige capsule (to match my hair!)

This is a workshop, so opinions/suggestions please!

Yep- you need gold boots! I like the first outfit most, but generally prefer skirts with summer tops. Do you have summer things out yet to outfit lab with too?

#1 and 4 are my favs,particularly #4 ,especially with gold boots ,although the sneakers work well whilst you are saving up for the boots!l am not sure about #2,it might just be the angle of the photo but the proportions look slightly off to me,it’s making you look top heavy.I think that the cashmere jumper goes very well with both the shoes and the skirt colour wise .

I like 1 and 4, and if the gold boots don’t magically materialize in your closet, maybe some dressy gold sandals?

The skirt is lovely on you, and a gorgeous colour. I like #1 the best . Have you tried on a denim jacket with it yet? One of your sleeveless shirts, the denim jacket and maybe some gold sneakers would be fun to see.

Great skirt, and my favorites are the first and fourth outfit. I would also try it with a short sleeve sweater, and then graphic tee and moto/denim jacket.

Yes to all of these! I think the new sweater works great with the skirt and yellow shoes. I fully support your desire for gold boots but I actually love the look with the converse (I have a sugar eye for silky skirts with tennis, I really dig the insouciance). I will be the spanner and say that #1, while a solid look, wows me the least - it feels the most expected, perhaps? That said, it's certainly a FFBO you can wear with confidence.

Nice skirt! I like it best with the lighter colours in 2 and 4. I’d like to see it with a slightly cropped top too. Or a wrap top.

I have a similar skirt that I wear underneath a lace skirt. But that may not be your thing.

@ suntiger - it was too cold to try summer tops! Yes with any of my V-neck t-shirts and a jean jacket as suggested by LJP.

@ LJP - I’m going to do a style session with the sweater. I got it mainly to go with the skirt, but the beige isn’t an exact match. However, the feel of the sweater is divine (!] so I want to ‘keep’ but need it to work in a few outfits…

No. 4 has a great feel to it, Carla. You like like you should be strolling along the streets of Paris in this.

Before I even looked at the photos, I was hoping for a monochromatic look with this skirt. I think keeping things neutral, along with the sheen of the skirt, creates a very luxe look. Could you wear a neutral solid top or sweater with the skirt and the heels, and then repeat the color of the heels in a bag? Possibly do your hair in a messy bun updo and perhaps try a long string of pearls?

Oh, I especially love #4! The skirt is a perfect addition to your closet. It's going to work with a number of your summer items, too -- classics, like the sleeveless white button front shirt, maybe the navy lace shell, the new boho blouse (maybe?), and even some striped tees, perhaps.

LOVE the idea of developing a capsule. Not boring beige...it's champagne, my dear! All effervescent bubbles!

I like the new sweater, too, and think it could work with the green pants, perhaps, as LJP mentioned. Or perhaps as a summer topper with the green linen pants. I think the sweater would also work with the fisherman's sandals.

#4 is brilliant! #1 also very good (have not read any other comments).

I am usually all about contrast but for some reason I prefer this skirt with the lighter tops. Maybe it is the delicateness of the fabric. Do you have very light grey tops? Sometimes warm beige/camel works with cool grey in an interesting way. I think I prefer the sneakers to gold boots, the sneaks dress down the skirt in a way that I like for everyday wear. The juxtaposition of a denim jacket may also be cool. If you have a white or cream denim jacket even better.

ETA - I see LJP also likes the idea of denim jacket, I love her idea of gold sneaks - even better.

For some reason I’m not so keen on #1? I have a “where are you going in that?” kind of thought about it. Not sure why. And personally I’m not so keen on the 2 yellows together as they are dissimilar to my eye.
I like 2 and 4 the best.

I enjoy slip skirts worn casually the most, so I love the version with the Chucks. Echoing Lisa's suggestion to try with a denim jacket. Also try a lavender pairing!

Nice stylings all the way round.
I also like the idea of a denim jacket but maybe in a white as well or perhaps a more delicate knit sweater instead of a chunky or graphic one. I saw these ones at Simons, you had mentioned before about adding more yin to your wardrobe and you could couple them with a denim jacket and your converse runners for that juxtaposition.

I really like those last sweater ideas from Dee. The lacy texture would add some weight and interest. The slip skirt is lovely and looks great with all your styling options so far, but to me it’s a very basic piece, almost like standard (not trendy) jeans. So you can add almost anything you wish! I also hope you have kept some of your lavender and red things and haven’t gone completely over to solid neutrals.

The shoes on view are all good, to me. No need for boots, unless you want cold weather choice. And as to that, the slip skirt seems like a transitional or solidly summer piece.

So far, so wonderful! I’m looking forward to your further variations as the season progresses.

This is a great piece for you! All of these work beautifully, but I have special love for 4, and I like the touch of the casual sneakers with it, to match the ease of the sweater. No need for gold boots unless you want the option to dress it up!

Great skirt! I will go with the group and agree that #4 is my favorite. I'm not sure about the black sweater, I prefer the lighter contrast, but that could just be me. Love the idea of gold boots and I bet they would work with a lot in your closet. And yes to trying lavender with it!

All good looks! I have a preference for #2 and 4 as casual stylings but that is pure personal bias. Just for fun, try the leopard shoes from #1 with the new sweater?

Inspiration! I bought a slip skirt months ago and haven’t worn it yet, but spring weather is here, so it’s time to give it a try. I especially like #1 as you have styled it. Maybe when I get home from the dentist today. Thanks for posting these photos.

I think all have potential, but beat me up, I love nr 3 the best--with the new stripe sweater and the yellow shoes. I feel you need somewhere a print with that amount of plain skirt in the outfit, somehow-and that's why my slip skirt I bought for me is an bigger animal (H&M)-so I could pair it with rather uni tops. The nr 2 could be better with white sneaks ---or a white T shirt with the slippers ---and nr 4 could look more seasonal if wearing withsome some light cowboy boots-but you know better-these are my 2 cents, only...:-).
