What skirt shapes are trending?

The last time I bought a skirt, three years ago, I picked up a pleated skirt. Midi length pleated skirts had been ‘trending’ for a while - at least a year, possibly more - when I bought mine.

I don’t see a lot of skirts in the wild, but when I was in the Big City two weeks ago, I noticed mostly longish, full skirts in solid colours, gathered into a high waist band. I didn’t really see any minis (but did see shorts), or pencil/tube skirts, but I know folks here on YLF liked the Ripskirt, which had a slim profile.

What skirt styles are you seeing where you live? What skirt styles interest you in 2022 and going into 2023. Anything in particular ‘trending?’

There are still a lot of pleats here. I have been tempted several times but resisted because I hardly wear skirts and feel I won’t change. They are so pretty though, I especially like metallic ones. I think otherwise they are long and fairly full but not circle skirts.
Of course we are about to change seasons here, just going into Spring. Will keep an eye out when I am next in a mall, for you, and report back.

You probably haven’t seen denim and leather (or faux) skirts on your trip to the city due to the weather but I do see them once in a while. Denim ones are mostly mini but I’ve seen a few midi, a-line. I like them, they have a nice, vintage look to them.

Interesting question - I could answer the question about blazers, jeans, pants, dresses, shoes....but not so much skirts.

I agree pleated skirts have been popular, as well as some long (midaxi) tiered ones. There are always some denim mini or pencil skirts around.

My skirt collection is below - whilst I don't think any of these are trending I think they can all look current enough styled correctly.

My guess is that mini's will trend again - just because it's been a while. Which won't help me!!

Hopefully Brooklyn chimes in as she has an excellent skirt game.

Here in Victoria, apart from some minis on the kids, I am seeing a variety -- pleated long skirts, some full dirndls (midi), some slip skirts (bias cut), many slim skirts (midi) with slits up one leg. Lots of tiered skirts. A few handkerchief style hems. Some wraps. This is the summer skirt show, though. For fall, I am unsure what it will look like. The common denominator on most of the skirts I'm seeing is an A-line or fuller shape.

You are right that the rip skirt is slimmer in profile -- but it's similar to some of the slit up the leg skirts and some of the wraps (since it is a wrap.) It's a sort of sarong style skirt, I'd say.

I have *read* that maxis, minis and knee length are all trending. That about covers everything, doesn't it . I will guess that knee length and straight will surge.

Come to think of it, I haven’t been seeing those pleated skirts everywhere like I did last summer. I don’t really know what people are wearing on their bottom halves. The main thing I’ve been noticing are midriff-baring tops. They are not reserved for the thin or for those in super-good shape, but I still can’t get up my nerve.

Because it’s winter here I’m not seeing many people wearing skirts but looking at the retail fashion editorials for (our) Spring I think it will be:
Slip skirts (midi length)
Fuller maxi and midaxi skirts
Short (mini) skirts with an a-line flippy shape.

In terms of details, I’m still seeing lots of shirring, tiers and ruching. Paisley, floral and abstract patterns.

Sadly, I’m not seeing much in the way of asymmetrical skirts

I want to say - and I may be imagining things - that I’ve seen a couple of full skirts that caught my eye. Very summery looks. But I see few skirts except my own in general, which is interesting.

So, I was in the mall this afternoon and took a few window photos for you. All long still. The first two of these are pleated still, and then there are tiers. Tiers don’t appeal to me personally- too long on me.

Oh and as to what appeals to me: if I could find a short flippy skirt just above the knee I would love that as a weekend shorts alternative. I looked 2 summers ago at one with a ditsy floral pattern but it didn’t fit right

After seasons of maximal tiers, frills and detail, the designer collections I have seen online and in online stores such as NetaPorter, seem to be streamlined and classic in their tailoring with a restrained elegance. Long slightly a-line leather and denim skirts, woollen knit skirts and silk bias cuts with less pattern and focus on fabrication and cut. My retail is full of pattern, colour and frills but I expect the tide is slowly turning.

Your inspiration picture looks right on the money, right down to the Gucci horsebit loafer.

I hope we see more of this type of cut. Flat at the hips. Still swishy but a bit more streamlined and easier to wear than the many skirts that feature gathers at the waist.

Brooklyn, I prefer that kind of fit too — I don’t wear anything terribly gathered at the waist. It’s too bulky on my midsection and hips for my liking.

I’m still seeing a lot of tiered skirts here but I’m ready for that trend to turn over. Long A-line-ish midi, maxi or midaxi skirts are popular here in the summer especially with slits for ease of movement and breeziness. Not seeing much in straight or pencil skirt styles, and I’ve given away my more body-con skirts.

Most of the skirts I see are either mini short or midi/maxi long — not much in between. The short styles tend to be worn by the young, but long styles are worn by all ages. I hope long skirts continue to be widely available! I don’t do any skirt even at knee length anymore.

I wanted to get a new white denim skirt this summer. When I asked at store after store in the mall they said they had no skirts and didn't plan to get any. I ended up with a white golf skirt from a sports store in a large size for more length. I travels well but is not what I wanted. I did get some casual skirts for summer on consignment to wear in place of shorts and have been happy with them.

Most skirts I see around here, a rare sighting, are full, gathered in tiers and midi length. Absolutely no pencil skirts or tube skirts. I still like pleated skirts, swishy with a slim profile. Good question.

Editorially and on the stylists I follow …..lots of mention of the vintage denim a - line midaxi or whatever you want to call it . It would look fantastic on you - witb your new Ralph Lauren sweater for example . I can’t believe I’m recommending a denim skirt . I may need an intervention . ( unless you are unbelievably cool and skilled as a stylist , they are no-go’s here in MB = too much of a religious signifier ) .

I don’t know what’s trending here. I really don’t shop in person anymore. Personally, I am wanting straight skirts (tube/pencil) in a longer length- below the knee. I’m also planning on having the bottom of my wedding dress made into a skirt.

It seems to me that dresses are more prevalent than skirts these days. It's a little easier with a dress, since it's one and done.

I have been wearing mini skirts this summer, both denim and smocked ruffly ones. I have seen suggestions that super long, draped skirts are coming in as a trend for fall. I will be passing on those.

As for what I see in the wilds of New Hampshire, the most common skirt I see is the athletic type with built-in shorts, and I do wear those myself to go for a walk.

I would love one of them, done in a classy way. I’m not sure what that entails—not a huge opening/slit for starters and silk or other good fabric, but idk what else. Don’t want to look like I’m headed for the pool in my pareo. I think of them as kind of a sister to the asymmetrical Grecian goddess tops discussed recently, but with the gathers placed in a way that wouldn’t throw me off balance or scrunch me up.

Minis that are A-line and flippy

Midis, Midaxis and Maxis that are full in some way, especially tiers, pleats, gathers, A-lines, wraps, and ruffles. A few trumpets and tulips. Some high-low. Seeing a bit of '80s bubble skirt too. LOTS of high slits.

In my area (NOT known for high fashion), I've mostly seen pleated midis, tiered midis and a-lines with slits. I like a pleated midi skirt, but the pleats have to be just right otherwise they add too much volume to my hips. I don't mind the a-line midis, either, provided the slits don't go too high. Sometimes I have to put in a couple of stitches to lower them a bit.

I love your inspo pic Carla - but I don't like the black Gucci loafers with it. I feel as though camel or cream or blush or brown mules would look good, or maybe loafers in a lighter colour....

I do like black loafers but mostly with trousers or jeans?

Is this my poison eye for black closed shoes with bare legs coming through or do you agree that a different footwear option would be more cohesive...

I know it's a model or influencer and Gucci loafers are lovely and expensive ...

@ Sal - I feel the same way about the dark loafers, especially because it isn’t bookended by dark hair. On the other hand, I’ve got black loafers (so comfortable) If I got a slip skirt and sweater to dupe the look, I would probably go for a dark colour like navy or bronze/brown. But, I’m not sure that is a skirt I want at the moment, thus the question!
