WIWx2: maxi skirt and slouchy clams

Here are my WIWs from yesterday and today featuring two items that a lot of people here seem to have difficulty with - a maxi skirt and slouchy pants. I think these are also two items that are hard to photograph as per Shannon's post. The slouchy pants in particular always seem to appear extremely wrinkled in photos, even though I swear they are not!

1/2: WIW 04.13.12 - I paired my long grey maxi with a slightly balloon-sleeved tee, handknit sweatervest, victorian boots, and long layered necklaces for a somewhat gloomy Victorian vibe. Added my leather moto for a bit more toughness and the pink scarf for a pop of brightness (since "constrast" is one of my key style rubric elements after all!)
Wearing: w118 skirt, Gap tee, handknit vest, Macy's necklace, Dolce Vita boots, Levi's leather jacket, handknit scarf.

3/4/5: WIW 04.14.12 - I mentioned in Una's slouchy pants post that I prefer them to have a slightly paperbag, belted waist as on this pair here. I paired with my favorite fitted puff-sleeve H&M tee (which is teal, not blue! As I mentioned before, my camera hates green) and nude oxfords.
ETA: Added another photo w/ blazer and satchel for going outside. I like the combo of slouchy drapey pants with the strong shoulders of the jacket.

I love your maxi outfit, and in a spirit of maxi solidarity I will need to post pics of the striped maxi I bought recently!

And I know I've trash-talked the slouchy pant trend, but I actually like these on you. The fitted top is a great counterpart.

Wow, those are some FANTASTIC pants, Diana! Love how you've styled them with a simple bright tee and toughened up with oxfords, which contrasts with the sweet bow-tie at the waist. And the slouch doesn't cause problems with adding visual pounds because of the low contrast with your skin and shoes! Great lesson, this!

In fact, I'm tempted to ask, between that outfit and #2 --- have you lost a little weight recently, or inches at least? Or am I just used to seeing you more layered? I'd actually have asked if you'd grown taller as well if I didn't know better!

And that little vest is AWESOME! It's skimpiness counters the larger expanse of fabric in the skirt, while the dark colour makes it 'shrink' too; and yet you're as covered up on top with the violet tee as on the bottom, making for excellent balance and very low contrast! Yep, this IS the way to do it.

#2 just took my breath away but I did not know what is so special about it. Then I read Manidipa's comments on the vest and that is it. Excellent balance and low contrast. Thanks for posting these Diana and thanks Mani for describing the colours and elements so well. Diana, you have really rocked the maxi look.
About slouchy pants, I am still not used to the look so can't comment.

I may have to eat my prior words about maxi skirts! You wear this one very well!

Your slouchy crops are fun - tucked with the paper bag waist is good choice because now I can tell the slouchyness is intended in rest of pant. Keeps a nice shape.

Honestly I haven't even tried on any slouchy pants, let alone cropped slouchies so I have not trained my eye yet. But you are giving the trend a good go and you look adorable in them!

Thanks for this post I love the way you've styled the skirt and pants. I have a black maxi skirt thst I bought for a polynesian funeral (no legs on show) and i have struggled with how to incorporate it into my normal wear - you've given me some great ideas. Thanks.

I almost didn't look because I am not normally a maxi fan but am really glad I did. The layering in pic 2 is fantastic. I really like the proportions too. I thought you were petite but if you are, you sure don't look it in this outfit.

I also think your slouchy pants outfit looks really good. I bought a similar pair last weekend but mine are more cropped than ankle and I am going to borrow your look when putting together outfits.

Love how you've styled both outfits! I would say this is advanced styling for sure -- maxis and slouchy crops are challenging, and your outfits work really nicely.

You look stunning in pic #2 Diana - long and lean. The pairing of the short vest with the maxi is pure genius. And I am surprising myself by how much I LOVE your slouchy clams. I don't know what the heck is happening with me and my new love for slouchy! It's a great combination with the tonal oxfords and the bright top. Gorgeous!

Thanks everyone! I know that both of these things (maxis and slouchy pants) are not everyone's cup of tea, so it means a lot to me that even those of you who don't like those trends appreciate my outfits!

Janet, Denise, and Kiwichik, I'd love to see your maxi outfits!

Mani, I love your outfit analyses! You always point out brilliant things that I hadn't noticed before about my own outfits! And thanks for noticing the weight loss... although to be fair, this is my "normal" weight and a few months ago I was carrying around an extra few pounds that were making me rather unhappy.

Christieanne, good point about the tucked paperbag waist making it look deliberate... I think this is actually one reason why I prefer the more voluminous waist on slouchy pants, because it's obvious that it's meant to be slouchy rather than just some unintended consequence of my bubble butt!

Dianthus, I am technically petite (5'3.5") but I am an expert at pretending to be tall! Having long legs for my height helps a lot.

Diana, I think you have styled bout outfits beautifully. I am not a maxi fan but I feel you have given this look a bit if a twist with the layering. You look very stylish. And the slouchy pants also look fab. Your proportions look perfect. Both are very stylish outfits with a lot on interest.
