WIWTW: DH made me change

What I wanted to wear to a casual dinner out with friends. DH almost never makes comments on what I wear but he had a definite opinion about my boot choice. I did a quick change before we left the house (only because he seemed to genuinely dislike it and I decided to be agreeable.) I'm curious if you have a similar reaction. I liked both but I'm wondering if I'm off base. It is spring and I thought the rolled jeans were kind of fitting. TIA for lending me your eyes

ETA: Okay, yes, what I'm really asking is who is right? Does DH have more fashion sense than me--LOL?!

Hmm, what you ended up wearing works! And for 3/4 -- to me the front view looks fine, but side view, with the rolled cuff, the peek of skin, and the gap of the boot, maybe there is too much going on?

Yes, for most guys to notice a fashion thing, something must definitely be strong enough to catch their eye!

I do like how your outfit looks with the cuffed jeans and booties -- I'd love to see it with a different pair of booties!

For a casual dinner? I'd be totally ok with your first pick. You'd fit right in in my hipster hood. Of course, I realise that may not be the greatest thing... but you haven't yet started a 'zine that you xerox and hand out at the dairy-free ice cream shop, right?

Hmm, I think the gap between your leg and the bootie might be a little wide. Personally, I like #1/2 better, but I'm not the most fashion forward person.

I also like the taller boots. DH wins this one, so sorry! I think the rolled jeans would look better with a shorter boot (bootie) or a pair of converse.

I am not sure why such a strong reaction. I am not sure it is the most flattering for leg length, though.

I also prefer the option that DH prefered, Kelly. But your original version is pretty fashionably "now" so it gets my blessing too!

I like rolled with booties because I'm really sick of tall boots and skinnies at this point in our never-ending winter

Unless you travel with a really fashion-forward crowd, I'd give this one to your husband. On the other hand, if you were meeting a group of YLFers for coffee, the rolled version would probably get a thumbs up. So you were both right, and both wrong--how's that for diplomacy!

@Thistle: Thanks! I’m not sure either--he just thought it looked weird. The rolled jeans and the booties were too much for him.

@Angie: Thank you for weighing in. I think I wore something similar and really liked it. Now that I think about it, it was a looser pair of boyfriends with a blazer. Slightly different silhouette.

@Jules: LOL! Me too. That’s why I went with the roll. I’m ready for spring!

@Gaylene: LOL! Brilliant solution. Thanks for chiming in. My environment is pretty conservative--so is DH. I don't mind dialing it back every once in awhile--as if!

My hubs and your hubs are in the same camp Kelly. If your jeans were unrolled another roll or so, so that they touched the top of your boots, maybe it would have looked less jarring to him? Give it another go and see what he says.

I agree that if your DH rarely objects than it is something worth looking at...
I prefer the one you wore as the side view with the boot gap was too much for my eye..

Thanks, Una and Claire! I guess I will have to warm DH up to the rolled look. Maybe it will look less jarring with sandals too.

ETA: Thanks, Tracy. I think we are on the same page--if DH notices anything, there must be something to it!

Kelly, you are so sweet and so adorable. I actually love both versions on you. Perhaps unrolling the jeans one more roll as Claire suggested will be all it takes to win hubby over to this look. I hope you had a wonderful time.

Hm, I like the final version best. Just because the booties have a very wide opening, and it's right next to the roll of the jeans. The original wasn't terrible though and looks great from the front.

@Debora: We had a lot of fun. It was fun to just get dressed up a bit. A couple glasses of wine and I had already forgotten about my outfit change.
@Rae: I still like it from the the front. That's how he saw it--never even made it to the side view.
@pil: LOL--yes, I humor him every once in awhile. Don't want him getting used to it though

There's something about the slimness of the part of your leg that's showing, compared to the visual width created by the pant leg and the open top of the boot that I don't care for so much. I'm on DH's side!

Husbands can be entirely amusing at times! I think the outfit works in both iterations. I would probably give it one less roll, but it is so nice to see a bit of ankle. You look great!

I agree with the opinion that the front view of your version is very cool, but the side profile shows the gap and therefore slightly awkward so will have to side with your husband on this one. Gorgeous color on both those boots though!

I actually like both looks equally. The rolled jeans seems more on trend and of the moment and the tucked look is just a basic good look.

I think both are great looks. I would suggest that Your DH (like mine) defaults to the more conservative look which would be what your wore. What you wanted to wear is perhaps a bit trendy and fashion forward for him:). I think it's lovely that you took his comment on board.

He must think you dress fab otherwise, I certainly do, so the look must have jarred him enough to say something. I do feel it is a special trendy look, which is a little different for you. You'll train him up!

Your version is on trend & still attractive but DHs version is more traditionally flattering as it doesn't chop up the leg line.

I'm with your hubby on this one, too. One thing I have found, is that men do have a great sense of proportion. Maybe not of colour, but proportion was the thing this instance.

I like what Hubby chose as well. I think I would like your choice better if the pants were either tucked into the boots *or* rolled up a little higher. Or, maybe, if you had a funky sock or legwarmer peaking up from inside the boot and scrunched down a bit so that only a little bit of it shows.

Some men are savvy about womens fashion, and can give good, articulate reasons for why they like something or don't like something. Some men, however, just have a gut reaction to a piece of clothing or an outfit without knowing why. So, you may find that tweaking an outfit your man doesn't like might change the outfit into something he *does* like. Men can be funny that way.

I have an example that is only tangentially related to fashion, and it isn't even a perfect example. But it does illustrate how the male mind sometimes works. My boyfriend believes that he hates the smell of patchouli. Mention it, and he wrinkles his nose and declares it disgusting. However, whenever I wear a fragrance that is heavy on the patchouli, he will always comment that I smell good. I will then disclose the patchouli factor to him. He will then confirm that he likes what I'm wearing, but that he still hates patchouli.
