WIW Please dissect my outfit.

Angie’s post about clothing categories of basics, essentials, statements and completers is loaded with great information. I have done much better understanding what creates each category, but confess to still being uncertain about pieces. I am posting a pic of WIW yesterday and hoping you will take a look and tell me which pieces you think are the essentials, statements or completers. While you are at it, please feel free to give me feedback about the look. I value your comments. Thank you for looking.

Black turtleneck sweater
Black skinny pants
Olive long vest
Tan suede booties
Necklaces and brooch
Cromia handbag (each side of the bag shown in the pics).

The outfit is beautiful, you look fantastic! I especially like the colour combination and the way your bag and jewelry makes the outfit shine.
I am not so good at the categories, but here is my best shot

- necklaces and brooch, bag = statements

- vest and boots = completers

- pants and turtleneck = essentials

Not sure about the boots - maybe essential?

Another agreement with Katerina. I think the boots are either essential or completer - that would really depend on the role tan boots play in your wardrobe. Do you always have a pair? Do you wear them frequently? Do they go with a lot of your bottoms?

And you look great! Love this outfit on you.

I was thinking what Katerina wrote. Your jewelry and bag are statements here. Wonderful outfit; I'm sure your students enjoyed looking at your necklaces!

I’ll dissent slightly and say that to me the vest seems like a statement piece and the jewelry completers (are these categories meant to apply to jewelry as well as clothing?). Otherwise I am in agreement with the other commenters. Which really just goes to show how individual this all is (and, I suspect that your categorization of how items work in your wardrobe is more to the point than others’ categorization of how items work for n an outfit).

This is an interesting exercise - I was thinking the same as SarahD8 that the vest was a statement piece and the jewelry completers. I think how we see items is very individual though - I use jewelry as completers so that's what I bring to this exercise.

I'm wearing a long vest too today, and with rather muted colors, so I kind of had the same questions. Yesterday, I had been thinking the essentials vs completers thing was easier to figure out in the context of an outfit, but then I put one together where I'm not sure. I do agree with Katerina in this case, though.

From what I've learned about your style on the forum, I'm going with this:

T-neck = Essential
Pants = Essential
Gilet = Completer
Boots = Completer
Bag = Statement
Jewellery = Statement

If you wear light grey boots A LOT, they might be an Essential - the same way cream and white footwear is an Essential for me.

I would have tended to agree with SarahDB that the vest was a statement and the jewelry completer. But as she said, it is so personal.

To me, the vest was the focal point and had the most drama. Bag is also a statement.

I can't tell if a black T-neck is an essential because that is personal to you and your own style. I think it probably is. Pants an essential. Boots might be a completer or essential.

Well now isn’t that interesting... my answer would be Angie’s - and she’s the expert - but I would have called the one necklace with stones a completer...

Katerina, thank you. I was thinking the same thing, except that this winter I have been wearing the tan boots a lot, since other Fabbers pointed out how they bookended with my hair. A new experience for me!

Elizabeth P the tan boots are new this year and I have been wearing them a lot. I would not have thought them essential, but now that I am trying to figure out the categories, I am wondering if maybe they are. I haven’t counted wears this winter, but I suspect they are getting almost as much wear as my black booties, which I do consider essentials.

Windchime, my students do like my jewelry, especially when I wear fun pieces.

SarahD, I think a lot of this is individual perception or preference. I thought the vest was a completer piece, but when I look at the pics, it does make a statement to my eye. Could it be both, or take turns with different outfits? I think this is an example of how I get confused.

Suz, you are spot on about the black turtleneck. It is probably my MOST essential winter piece.

Rachylou, Ahhhh! Good eye! Out of the necklaces, the sparkly pendant and the Island necklace are solid statements, but the one with th white stones, might just be a completer.

Joy, I will repeat this outfit! I felt fab all day!

I also learned that I did a terrible job washing my mirror.....big streak city! Right now, Windex is an essential!

Lynn, when I have a long stretch of fabric down my front I do like to layer jewels or add a scarf. It has visual appeal to me and those extra pieces are often my happiness factors.
