WIW...cream and white together?

At Wimbeldon earlier this year Meghan Markle wore a blue and white striped top with cream trousers. She caught grief from the fashion police for mixing white and cream (as well as for the ridiculous flare on the trousers.) I liked the outfit, and today was an opportunity to do my own clash - cream and blue striped mariner and white jeans. To be honest the cream and white were not as high contrast as I thought and the silhouette is completely different, however...

...what do you think about cream and white together - particularly when there is another colour involved either as a stripe or pattern?

I must admit, I prefer your version, although Meghan's is also lovely!

I have to admit, I don't get the big deal about neutral-mixing ... after all, the whole point of neutrals is that they go with anything; how can they then not go with each other?

I like your outfit (and Meghan’s too). Honestly, it would not have occurred to me that there could be something “clashing” with mixing white and cream in this way. Don’t understand the criticism.

I like your outfit, Runcarla, as I can't see a difference in the photo in the shades of white. However, I don't generally like cream and white together when I've tried it with my own outfits. I think Meghan looks fine too, so I think it's only a problem on me.

I used to notice white and off-white in tennis outfits. The wool was off-white, and the cotton was white. I can’t really tell in your outfit, but Meghan’s is reminiscent of an old time tennis outfit, with the off-white flannel pants.

I wear your exact outfit all the time. It looks great on you. Although admittedly I am biased.

I like Meghan’s outfit, too.

You look great (as does Meghan)! I like cream and white together- agree with the comment about tennis wear above. I've worn my cream Gap chinos with a white thermal shirt, a cream scarf, and white sneaker boots. Plus the nautical stripes look is always classic - thinking of a Jackie-at-Hyannis-Port look (tho I couldn't find an image).

I had also been taught the dogma that cream and white (or different shades of white/offwhite) don't mix. Then I learned here on Angie's blog that I don't need to follow this dogma (and I seem to recall the same applies for black tones?).

I still think there are cases when the cream/white combo doesn't work, though I can't say why. I find it works perfectly in your outfit--perhaps the stripes ease the transition from offwhite to white? And I also like it in Meghan Markle's outfit. (I like the flaaaaaare too.)

I have to admit I would have to see these outfit in real life to get a true sense of the pairing. I personally find that mixing cool colors with warm colors can be jarring to my senses. I'd like to explain why, but I don't have the words. It is more of a feeling.

I like your version better than MM’s. I have trouble mixing white and cream myself — it’s hard to reprogram myself from the “matching whites” thing. But more and more, I’m loosening my views on things having to match.

I think the pairing of cream and white is old-school sophisticated and chic. Especially when the fabrics are different . Your outfit is great, carla!
