WIW...and styling the ‘disco collar’

Summer 2019 I thrifted a red and white gingham shirt ($5) to wear for Canada Day, with plans to re-donate afterwards. The shirt was well made and fit well, but had a funky collar - long and pointy. Before I got around to recycling the shirt, I saw photos of Victoria Beckham in similar collar styles. The more I studied up on fashion trends, the more I saw the collar style. The ‘disco shirt’ is listed as a fringe trend in Angie’s trend report.

My thrifted shirt has a decided western vibe (chest pockets, and pearlized snaps) but the collar is right. #1+2 what I wore for Bridge Night. #3 to show shirt buttoned up. #4, 5, 6 runway inspiration.

Questions/thoughts: I would like to wear the shirt buttoned up high, but don’t have crew neck sweater (only v-necks). Does the shirt skew too western (vs disco) without a sweater? Noting the pairing with narrow high waisted skirts, what type of pants do you think might work? Any other styling ideas? Do you think I can disco-fy this shirt, or should I just enjoy it for it’s quirky retro western vibe?

I have to admit I LOVE the collar of that shirt and don't think it looks too western to be disco-fied. To my eye (so take it with a grain of salt), it leans more western when it is buttoned up without something over it, and more disco when open. Have you tried it with your olive chinos or white jeans?

Why not play it up with full on western styling? Layered under a denim jacket, white jeans, maybe modern sneakers? Fab shirt and collar! Looks like it fits right in your wardrobe too! Love it!

It's a fun shirt and fits you great. I like it unbuttoned more - jewelry/pears/little scarf to play with?.. Sweater should work too - I would like to see how v-neck looks like over that shirt.

Wow that is a collar but I kind of like it! Did you try it with the v-neck? I do like it buttoned all the way. I agree with nemosmom though, that it looks more disco when partially unbuttoned.

I have a weird affinity for these collars. I like them open, not buttoned up, and like the look best with a blazer or jacket. I think I've always liked the way the collar stays decisively outside of the jacket collar, whereas smaller, floppier collars slide around and end up inside the jacket collar.

I'm watching from the sidelines in fascination. I won't even pretend to like this , but am curious how it looks newly styled. I have a family picture with me sporting a red shirt with white tiny dots and a huge collar like this, worn over a matching knit vest, and a homemade leather/wooden bead choker. That image scarred me for life.

I think you can wear it on its own with cropped jeans for an updated western vibe or with a pullover a la Beckman et al with just the collar showing. I love your bridge night outfit, too--that's another fun way to wear it, full-on juxtaposition style.

I think a slightly glitzy belt with jeans would be fun. Or wide crops. Here is my 1974 original shirt ( I don’t usually wear blue eye make up but I was in theme)

I love it! Disco collars and collars outside the jacket are my favorite new trends (along with flares). Have been trying to find with some success but that red shirt is a prize! Try it under a sweater like VB!

Thrift a crew- neck sweater so you can wear it like pic 5 or VB in pic 6, if you want to. It would be fun, but otherwise I’m kind of with Lisa P. This look should stay in our childhood photos or on John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever!

I love this look on you, both open collared and buttoned up. The juxtaposition is what makes it work to my eye. Adding more "western influenced" items might make it look to much like a costume. I would love to see it with a cardigan buttoned up to look like a pullover crew neck.
