I went into town yesterday & wanted to wear some layers as I wasn't trying on clothes. I feel really "me" in this outfit but I am not liking the black on me as I age. If these clothes came in navy I'd pounce - but maybe they wouldn't look the same. What do you think?

Oooh; I really like your layers! I think that the black works here because it's broken up with different textures, and your bag is a pretty purple and there is the longer layer with the white and black patterns.

I think navy is a dark neutral colour and would work well with this outfit! Give it a try if you don't like black (or in addition to black!)

I love this. Is the black & white another layer or is it the hem on the black tunic?
Does charcoal gray work for you?
Are those Trippen boots? I think I see that cool heel detail.

Thanks lyn my problem is I can't find clothes like these in navy they all seem to be black or white!
thanks fern yes the black/white & brown (though you can't see the brown) is part of the tunic. Well spotted; they are Trippens - I can walk for hours in them. Charcoal grey is not so good on me unfortunately.

Well I think you look great here, and the black and white, including your hair is very dramatic and striking. I do understand what you mean about black being difficult to wear, but it is not apparent in this photo at all.

Thanks shevia - I do feel fine when I'm all made up; it's when the make up wears off & I've been on my feet all day that I feel it's a little harsh.

Caro, this is stunning! I know what you mean re finding the right garments in navy...and there is something kind of cool about black! If I passed you in the street wearing this I would HAVE to stop you and tell you how fabulous you look. The black is not reading as too harsh. You have skin showing in the neck area, the white in the outfit and your hair and beautiful fair skin adds softness. I could go on....love this!

It's gorgeous! Both sophisticated and artsy at the same time. Love it!
I think the black looks great, but if it bothers you, perhaps a small (or large) scarf around your neck in a different color or print would work.

I think the bits of white and the lovely color in your bag keep the outfit from looking severe. I like it!

The lack of alternatives to black everywhere in this aesthetic is so frustrating! Like you I would adore to see more navy - or any other very deeply shaded colour.

FWIW, the black does not read harsh on you at all Caro. You have such bright, beautiful skin and gorgeous silver hair that it balances out the black, if that makes any sense. Plus you have white in the outfit which breaks up the expanse of black. Personally I'm finding that the more silver I get, the better black looks on me.

I love these layers on you - you have a beautiful artistic vibe to your style. Love it!

Caro, you look terrific here. With your beautiful silvery hair, black and white work brilliantly. But I understand completely. I am drawn to this aesthetic, too, and feel endlessly frustrated about the limited choice of colour. (It turns out I can't successfully wear these shapes, but that's another issue altogether!)

I recognized the shoes as Trippen because of them.

I ADORE the look, so I'm very happy I can enjoy it vicariously on you.

If you want these styles in navy or another neutral, I wonder if it might be smart to find a really good seamstress who could make them up for you. This is what some of our list members do (or make them themselves.)

The white helps a lot! You could also add a scarf in a flattering combination close to your face when you wear as much black as this.

I have silver (starlight is what I am calling it now) hair. Throw some big silver hoops on and get some light up near your face. No problem with black.

(my silver hoops were purchased when I was 13 years old. Napier, if you remember that brand. I paid $14, a large some 41 years ago and I still wear them all of the time. )

Wow! Beyond fabulous! It's beautiful with your hair... and rather *steampunk for reality.* I do think another color would change the vibe, make the same look more artistic eclectic. I like Angie's suggestion of a white scarf - or even a light grey one that basically reads as white - near your face.

I love the layered drama of this outfit. I know what you mean about black - I feel like a lot of what I love is in black, because that's more the color of avant garde, but I'd love to see some Rick Owens or Helmut Lang type pieces in COLOR!

Suz I LOVE the look of that shop - I have tried getting things made but without much success - that's why I'm happy to pay for great clothes I can see how much creativity & effort goes into them.
Ceit the coat is from Rundholz (a German label) from at least 10 years ago - I have worn it everywhere & it still looks new.

Caro, I think this looks very chic and lovely. Your artistry in combining these pieces is inspirational to me. I don't have any problems with the black, but since you wish for something different (non-gray), how does taupe work for you? It is versatile and soft while still being neutral. I also think denim could add a touch of heathery color that keeps the vibe in the neutral palette.

Alaskagirl - Rick Owens or Helmut Lang in navy or even dove grey is my idea of clothes heaven. I might try photo shopping them to see how they look.
JulieJohn you are right about the denim - I have a leather jacket in a denimy blue that works with this look

I think you carry this look off incredibly well. I can't wear that much black any more (I'm 55) but I do like navy and charcoal grey. However with your hair and skin tone, it seems to work really well for you. I love your whole look. It's very unique and individual and looks very authentic. I'm loving this!
