Thanks Inge! Yes, it was the empire waist in combination with the cardi. I had a look when I came home and I saw why they asked - the loose swinging cardigan (short in the back) resulted in me looking larger in front than I really am depending on the way I was standing. I think the plaid shirt is too short to go with the leans, I don't feel like I have enough coverage in this combination, but I can switch the leans for some patterned hose - that would be fun!
Thanks Ceit! I've worn the cardigan with the shirt before, but it doesn't work with these pants. I might need to invest in some well fitting skinnies after all. I think I just have to find a dark unobtrusive pair with a nice rear view and I would be fine.
Thanks Suz! I also felt like the low contrast colors helped. I like the cardigan over the shirt, I've worn that before. I've also worn the cardigan with the dress you mentioned, that's actually one of my favourite ways to wear it. It is a lot shorter in the back and I feel like it looks better with dresses underneath because of that.
Thanks Firecracker! The dress is navy, yes. When I did belt it I wrapped the cardigan in the front and then belted at my natural waist (which is quite high) so that you couldn't see the empire waist anymore. I agree that a cropped cardigan could work, but I don't have one.
