WIW: with the snow boots ETA: snow pics

Since I just wrote a long post whining about snow boots... I figured I should actually show you how I'm wearing them today. Sorry about poor quality pics - the snow boots also mean I can't use my regular picture spot (that has natural light) since I don't want to track residual salt and sand into the bedroom, so i'm stuck taking photos in my poorly lit front hall.

I'm just going to work today, so casual/snuggly is fine. Wearing my old BR Martin skinnies, which are too warm most of the time but which are perfect for 14F/-10C and snowing, my aran sweater, and the brown Sorels. My outerwear scarf has some brown tones in it so I hope it makes the brown boots look a little less out of place with my black coat and bright hat and mittens (red hat and green mittens are my nod to holiday dressing today, I guess!).

I love the whole outfit. I cannot believe you knit that whole sweater! It's beautiful, I love the pattern. And handknit scarf, mittens and hat too! So impressive! The boots look great with the outfit, and the red hat is so cute.

6 yo DD signed up for the knitting elective next semester. I thought I might want to learn along with her too--any tips on how to get started & learn to knit?

I love your outfit! Your snow boots are really fab to me too, but I have a sugar eye for wintry boots. I read your other thread & I can completely understand the frustrations re: having to wear more casual/mismatching footwear than you'd like to events. So you have my sympathies!

Natalie, how cool! I hope your DD enjoys knitting! To learn, I think the best thing would be to see if you have a nice local yarn shop nearby. They usually offer lessons, and can set you up with good yarn and needles. Do not go to Michaels or other big box stores. I think you're much more likely to enjoy it and stick with it if you have nice materials to start with.

My sister taught me to knit, but she was not a very good teacher, and in fact I was doing one of the basic stitches wrong for a few months at the beginning! After the initial lesson, I got a couple of books and taught myself the rest. Now there's so much resources online that I think you probably could learn everything with youtube videos and other online tutorials!

And of course, Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com) is a great resource for patterns, techniques, and inspiration.

Thanks Diana for your advice. I called one of the local yarn shops to see if we could take our first class together. They have a two hour introductory class this weekend, but she is checking with the instructor to see if DD is old enough to join. She'll be doing the after-school class once a week starting in January. A different yarn shop has a set of four 2-hour classes from 7-9, which sounds like it would be really good, but it's just unrealistic to ask DH to handle all three kids and put them to bed four weeks in a row. Plus I'm on call one of those weeks. Just not going to happen! Maybe if I can do the one class and get set up with supplies, then I can look at YouTube for more instruction.

For anyone thinking about knitting, youtube is a great resource for beginners and I've always found the Stich 'N Bitch book to be a good reference.
