WIW: White is the new grey - or is it?

Here's another take on this shell / layers look. In today's "white is the new black" spirit, I have tried it three ways:

Chelsea 28 black/grey/metallic/white shell
Cream J Crew silk blouse
Cream J Crew western-ish booties

and

Emerson Fry white Mick Jeans
Citizens grey skinny jeans
J Crew charcoal wool pinstripes

My view: First, I am not sure that I like the shirt peeking out at the bottom. It feels like it's making the bottom welt of the shell scoot up in an less than flattering way

Second, I tried it with three different pants. Oddly, I liked the charcoal wool pants the best in the mirror but am not too fond of how they photographed here looking rather baggy. I liked how the light grey jeans looked, but I wore those jeans yesterday, so I decided to go with the white.

I like #3 best, followed by #1 - great looks. I think the body con pants in #2 would look better with a more fluid top, but that is definitely a personal preference of mine, although one I believe is also more current than head-to-toe body con/tailored.

The shell is such a lovely textural mix.

You are having the same problem I had with my knit shell. I think a couple of things might be going on.

1. I think maybe the shirt's fabrication/ length are not quite right to make this look work. I experimented with one top that was definitely too long, and another that might have been too short -- I didn't find my "sweet spot" top -- which is one reason I ended up tucking the top in, in my versions.

2. I think the shell might not be oversized/ boxy enough. Mine is a fluid but not boxy fit and this might be similar. To really skim it needs to be quite loose and boxy. That way it won't "squeeze" the top at the bottom.

I still think these work, but I wonder about how it feels. If it feels at all bunchy/ fussy, that might be what's going on.

I think that you are correct that my shell is not loose enough -- it fits but it wants to come in at the waist, which doesn't give the skimming look that would be better. I'm going to go with tucking, I think.

I also like the darker pant. The main reason was that the white shirt bottom got lost in the white pants. That may be a picture only issue though.

I would pick 2 as my favorite, the shirt peeking out looks perfect and I like the subtle contact with the gray skinnies. Well done!

for this specific look, #3 is my fave. as an outfit lab for white on "white", i really like the light grey pants as a "white" sub especially if you are linking different shades of "white" like optic, winter or even cream. the gray makes the unmatchiness of the white shades intentional.

this is my own preference because i have a thing about matching shades and low contrast dressing.

Carly, I really like the Mick pants from Emerson Fry a lot. I have both black and white. The white fabric is a little less heavy than the black, but is not insubstantial. I am still wearing them a lot into the fall. Two things to be aware of: they run a little big, and it might not be apparent from the photos on the site, but they are very distressed, meaning that there are a couple of almost-holes on purpose.
