WIW when the plan didn't work

I am still dressing under my "outfit project' which has been working well, until today.

This is the VC tube skirt. I had planned to wear it with a mustard color short sleeve sweater. But the stripes showed through and looked. weird. I could have switched to a black sweater but it is really hot this week so I grabbed a lightweight super soft knit instead.

I know that it doesn't look super polished and the fit is pretty slouchy. Does it look ok or are the proportions too off?

I don't think this looks bad -- it has volume, but showing your calves adds structure. I would probably push up the sleeves, but I do that regardless

Great save, and the pop of yellow is perfect. Are you saying that these outfits you have planned are just put together "on paper" and not outfits you have road tested or at least tried on? Or maybe the lighting was just different when you tried it with the mustard top in the planning stage? If you just made up all these outfits without trying them on first, and this is the first day it didn't work...I am seriously in awe of your fabness!

I agree with Ceit. Scrunch the sleeves and it will be perfect! Your shoes always add a lot of edge and interest. I don't think you can go wrong with this silhouette. Looks fab!

What Ceit and kelly said. Scrunch those sleeves and you are golden.

Speaking of golden, I had this problem, too, with the stripe show through and a sheer sweater -- so I popped a cami underneath the sweater and all was good. A golden one (like your proposed top) could allow you to wear that combination.

Echoing what everybody has said about scrunching the sleeves.
Having had the same issue with stripes myself, do you all think the cami needs to match the top, or would nude, white, or black work? It's hard to have a cami to match every top!

Can you take one more "scrunch the sleeves?" The bag color and booties work great. Maybe one nude/black or a rainbow of camis is in order to address grinning issues.

All of you scrunchers will be glad to know that I did scrunch! Thank you for your support. I ended up feeling ok in this outfit.

Carter, I had worn the sweater with a different striped skirt and it was fine. The issue today was that I have not yet hemmed this skirt so I had it hiked up. Seeing the stripes a couple of inches above my waist was just a bit too much!
And it was too hot for a cami today.

Even without the sleeves scrunched I like it, with scrunched sleeves you must have been fab!

I like the outfit. It's maddening when stuff that should work doesn't because of see-through fabric. Grr.

I don't think the proportions look off. I think it's because the black shoes kind of "add on" to the black sweater and create the 2:3 ratio between black and the lighter-colored skirt. I think if you had worn a different color of shoe, maybe the proportions would have not looked as good?

I think this is gorgeous. I love the boot shoes with this and the pop of color with the bag. A very much up my alley kind of outfit

I agree your outfit looks fab. I like the proportions, with your addition of scrunched sleeves--I think that's the only thing throwing off this photo. Love those shoes with the outfit--they really do dress it up so much more than another choice might (say, flats of some kind--sandals, oxfords, sneakers--all of which would work, for a more casual look).

Seriously this is working. This post gives me an idea for a look I could try so thank you.

See through fabrics are a pain, I find white, black, nude and maybe grey camis cover most bases. But in the heat no way!

I really like this outfit! The skirt is slim enough that it adds enough structure for my eye. The only thing I see is that the yellow bag is a bit light for the heavier looking sweater, but I bet the sleeve scrunch took care of that and visually lightened things.

That skirt is KILLER. Love it with the yellow bag, of course! I think the skirt is fitted enough that it definitely works with the oversized sweater.

I'd love to pair that skirt with boots this fall! You look great!
