WIW when a random lady complimented me

Today I did a volunteer shift at our local food pantry, then stopped off at Trader Joe's to pick up a few things on my way home. On my way in to TJ's, a random lady said to me, "You look great! That is a great outfit!" I felt very happy because I pulled it all together from older pieces in my closet.

What were you wearing the last time you received a random compliment on the street?

That is a great outfit, all the pieces work well together. I got compliments from two different men and a docent when I wore these old items together on a visit to an art museum. It was the first time I tried this combo and will wear it often in the future.

What a nice complement to receive! And you do look great in this outfit.
A few days ago young woman stopped me on the street and I expected that she will ask me for directions or something like that, but she just wanted to tell me that she likes my skirt. This skirt is definitely my most complemented item.

Ages ago...20 years?...a woman said she liked my scarf.

Truthfully, receiving compliments is super rare in my life, either from strangers or from friends. I never much thought about it until a similar question came up years ago on the board and I had to realize it! Is it because I'm usually swimming against the current or because I just don't look that good? Actually, I think I'm better off not thinking about it!

Any time I wear red, strangers will comment (in a good way). I get lots of ‘love the hat’ when I wear my red beret, and ‘cute outfit’ when I wear the Hawaiin shirt or red skirt.

Just happened this afternoon.

And just like MsMary, I was wearing a striped top and skirt!

I was heading towards Starbucks after an appointment across the city, and a lady stopped me to say, "You look so pretty. Just delightful." It made my day!

Also like MsMary, everything I was wearing was old, easy and comfortable in the heat. I had on a COS cropped tee, Athleta skirt (a true workhorse), and Dansko sandals. The pops of color were my orange-red lippie and my one new piece, a mini quilted bag in bright orange, which, alas, didn't make the photo.

I was too busy trying to keep three cats out of the closet while taking the picture to grab the bag!

One occasion that comes to my mind is when I was in the grocery line and a man behind me complimented me on how I looked in my gray tweed-pattern puffer coat. He said it looked really good with my hair. I don't have the coat in Finds, but here's a photo of me in it. In fact, I might have been wearing this exact outfit.

When my best friend was visiting last week and we were out and about together, she got a few compliments from strangers and I got none. I'm not taking it personally. Really, I'm not. LOL!

You do look great- fit and cheerful and stylish! My last compliment was from a friend a few days ago. I was wearing a white linen camp shirt, black linen cropped trousers, and black fisherman sandals. I took a picture that day, but my mirror was so dusty it looked like I was photographing myself through a smokey fire.

Fun thread! My last complement was last week. I was wearing an ancient Lafayette 148 navy skirt with a murky grey floral print. It’s from when Edward Wilkerson was the design director and they had amazing prints.

I can’t remember! But I get compliments every week at work from either staff or patients. Two days ago it was on my olive boots.

It's also nice to read this as a reminder to give genuine compliments to others when I appreciate their outfits (and when it is not creepy to do so).

Well, of course she complimented you -- you looked awesome!!

The last time a stranger complimented my outfit I was wearing my (very old) J. Crew Liberty 2 piece dress and a denim jacket (positively ancient). That was yesterday. The print on that J. Crew works really well on me.

Before that, it was my Pom Pom London bag that got compliments (a different outfit, a week ago.)

I last was complimented when wearing a white linen button up with my black satiny slip skirt. It was the gallery curator at work and she liked the texture mix I am so embarrassed by compliments that I responded "well, it's what was in the closet" *facepalm* ... Maybe someday I'll learn just to say thank you?!??

The young woman i work with often comment on how much they like my outfits. But this all white outfit received a surprising compliment from one of my younger male coworkers.

Now to flip the question- when was the last time you spontaneously complemented someone else?
I told someone at the grocery store last week that I loved the way they matched their sneakers and their tee shirt. I think they felt good that it was noticed.

Last outfit I got randomly-- and exuberantly, I might add--complimented for was my Boho Rockabilly outfit. A woman in Walmart nearly ran me over with her cart while she stared at me. She said, "I"m so sorry! I was staring at you because your outfit is amazing!" I got stared at NUMEROUS times in various stores that day.

I don't get complimented too often with my outfits. I find when I play it safe, no compliments. When I go more natural or sporty or TOO boho in style? No compliments. When I wear more romantic yet somewhat structured looks, I tend to get compliments. I actually see this as valuable feedback. I'm still going to dress how I like. But it tells me I'm better off pairing elements I love from the other style aesthetics with a more romantic, structured style. And I admit, that is how I'm tending to do things more.

It is wonderful to hear that people are generous enough to give out compliments to strangers really. Although I can see why with all the complimented outfits! My most cherished compliment of late was from the cashier at a thrift shop I visit once or twice a month - she told me she admires my style and always likes to see what I wear.

My last stranger compliment was last week when the girl taking my lunch order liked this outfit. Which was nice because I was all alone in my office with no one to appreciate it. My most memorable stranger compliment was when a woman in my neighborhood stopped me on the street and said “Ooooh, I love your style, you look like someone from … <thoughtful pause> … FINLAND!” And at that moment I realized this must be the same person who several years ago told me I looked like someone from Milan! (As you can see in the photo, I do not look like someone from either of those places, lol.)

The women at work and I compliment each other on a fairly regular basis. (They're lovely and smart to work with and I feel very fortunate and grateful to have them as colleagues!)
The last time I was complimented by a complete stranger was in the spring at the dollar store (haha!) on this skirt.

I often get compliments on my accessories--Turquoise jewelry, shoes or scarfs

Most recently last week I received a compliment on my metallic leather red sneakers. I call them my "wonder woman" sneakers! They are super fun and comfy. Worn with a simple black linen dress and leopard bag to the Seattle Art Fair opening...which had awesome people watching and some fantastic outfits!

I really enjoy that sling bag. It is nice to get a compliment like that.

One time, walking home from a night of partying with day-after makeup, a dress and not much else, I got stopped by a fashion photographer in NYC and she snapped my photo. This was no Halston-style thing I was wearing--it was a thrifted bright red cotton shift dress with a large Hawaiian floral print pattern. I guess when you're wearing an "I threw this on" attitude, people notice. LOL
