WIW: what do we think of brown and black together?

I've always liked the look of brown and black together but my mother used to say they were colours that couldn't be worn together...

These were the brown skinnies that I picked up at the Woolies sale. I'm going to have to play around with styling them.

Any suggestions welcome!

Hello Hil,
I love brown and black together, but I am too a recent convert. I prefer a stronger contrast so I usually pair a warm cognac shade of brown with black. Whenever I want to buy a new item if clothing I consult a colour wheel to see all the possible colour relationships. I bought a cardboard version at an art shop but I have also found an iOS app called Peppermint which is excellent. I looked up the chocolate brown of your bottoms and, voila, several complementary pairings such as turquoise, teal, denim blue, dark red/burgundy, brick red, mid brown, khaki/army green. These colours would have to be cross referenced with colours which suit your complexion and adjusted accordingly. I found TheChicFashionista's 'colour analysis' an excellent tool for this and it's free! A google search should point you in the right direction.
Anyway, hope this helps! These are the tools in my arsenal

I also like to wear black and brown together but I do think it can be iffy. I like to pair black outfits with brown leather, for shoes, belt, bag and maybe even jewelry. But your black/brown outfit here is fine.

I love black and brown together but it can be a tricky look to pull off. I like them to be contrasting, if the shades are too close together it looks like you're trying to match and not succeeding. I prefer to wear black skirt/dress/pants with brown shoes rather than the other way around. It looks stylistically deliberate, where as brown bottom and black shoes looks like I didn't have the right shoe so I resorted to black. I think your outfit can work if you gave it a shot of color!

I'm especially glad to see this trend in menswear. Gone are the days that men wear black shoes all the time. Now I see navy suits with light brown shoes or black suits with more colorful shoe. It's refreshing!

Big Yay! It looks sophisticated to my eye. I like the black shoes grounding the color combo here. Your hair adds color. I don't think you need to add more.

Actually, I rarely find brown clothing in my size, but this bolero is black with brown, gray, camel, and white threads running through it. Works for me!

I find when I wear an all neutral outfit that it's important to include a lot of texture and/or pattern.

I hate to say it...but in this case, your mother was wrong.

Brown and black are brilliant together, and particularly on you in this outfit. With your hair, the pants bookend. (I know they are not the same colour, but it is an overall visual effect). And you look wonderful!

Who is this elusive "they" who get to make up all these rules about what we can and can't wear? Of course you can wear brown and black together, and navy and black, and orange and red, purple and blue, and--OK, I'll stop the ranting, but you get the message.
