WIW: Volume on volume

I based this outfit on Angie's flared skirt ensemble post, which teamed a flared skirt with a cropped sweater. I found this cacoon top last week and enjoyed the roominess and the interest of the back and thought that it might possibly be a warm weather substitute for a sweater. However, looking at the photos I think the proportions may be wrong and the top needs to be quite a bit shorter.

This skirt is lovely to wear on warm days, as it flares and swings but so far I am stumped styling it with anything other than a tucked-in top. Which is fine. But I was wanting to try something a little more fashion forward.

I love the top but I do see why you think it should be shorter. Did you try a semi-tuck?

It looks good to me! I think you definitely have the proportions to pull off two voluminous pieces at once, especially since they're balanced out with bare arms and legs. Love the necklace too!

Wow, you are looking great. Those shoes just wow me. I love the v in the front. Are they comfortable?

I agree the top could be a bit shorter and wonder about a semi-tuck. Or just sort of blousing it higher up a bit for a faux semi-tuck. The skirt is fantastic.

This looks great. The volume over volume works really well. I can see that a little bit less length on the top could work, but I like as is too. Fab shoes!

Hmmm....I'm an outlier here but I actually like the proportions of the longer top with the skirt. I think it gives the outfit a bit more edge with the volume-on-volume type of look.

What a beautiful top and skirt, Sharon! I quite like it as is, actually, and was also thinking the same thing as Suz: you could also try to blouse it up a bit more.

I can also see it work with a (slightly) cropped sassy sweatshirt or a jumper with high-low hemline. A few examples in Angie's blog post here:

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone. I haven't actually tried a semi-tuck - I will give it a go. I tried blousing it up shorter, but I lost the crisp edge at the front then. I will experiment with tucks!

@Suz, the shoes are really comfortable as they have a lowish heel and they lace up, so the fit is adjustable. They are by far the coolest shoes I own. I bought them last year but it is only this year I have been giving them the love they deserve!

It sounds like the trick to making a top work with this type of skirt is to find a way to define the waist, whether it be by a cropped top, a banded top, or a belt.

The sleeveless top shows off your beautiful arms! :^)

Ohhh, I'm always curious about volume on volume since I wear lots of full skirts but usually with a more fitted top tucked in. I think this is a really neat look and the proportions look edgier this way (which I thought before I saw Shannon's comment!). But shorter banded tops would look great too!

Oh my goodness! Stunning proportions IMHO. I love this Sharon, so flattering and very fashion forward. Now you are naughty, you know us Aussie girls want to know where you everything is from... particularly the skirt... please??

Ooh, la! Well, a shorter top would be more conventional, but I wouldn't say it would be necessarily more flattering on you. This is kind of a revised 20's silhouette, with modern trimmings. I think you're wearing it beatifully!

I have to agree that I would prefer a shorter top in proportions - have you tried to pull it up a bit? If it has a welt it should work.
Sometimes one inch in length makes all the difference...

Ooops, sorry Deborah. The skirt is Veronika Maine. They had 25% off recently, so I snagged a few pieces. The top is Cue. The shoes are Wittner, but from last summer.
