WIW: Transitional Autumn looks

Hi All,

Well Autumn is almost over here (officially it ends at the end of May) but it has been mild. I have worn a coat once or twice, but am yet to wear a puffer jacket at all. It is easy to dress in this sort of weather as almost anything can work. Here are some recent looks.

1) Flares and a floral blouse worn to work. The blouse and jeans are from last year, the boots are six seasons old now but still going strong.

2) I said I was not going to wear lilac....... Here I am in a lilac scarf. Never say never!! I found this scarf in a charity shop for $8 and thought it was a fun way to nod to the trend. Worn with navy and denim in a fairly easy work from home look. I have also worn the scarf with a cream wool coat which I really liked.

3) Off to the movies. I have been on a bit of a movie binge over the last two months. Two French films (The Guardians, Jalouse), Death to Stalin, Avengers Infinity War, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Peter Rabbit. (Plus on Netflix Whiplash and Pitch Perfect (don't know how I missed that one)). This was on Sunday on an extended family outing to a boutique local cinema. I hadn't tried this floral blouse with the leather jacket but I felt like it worked.

4) Off to see one of our work suppliers to try and get better service!! I honestly got ready here in less than 5 minutes due to a parental crisis and realised after seeing the pics that the colours are not great - I don't like the boots and the scarf together. And the crazy expression. Next time I will wear a lighter scarf with these boots.

5-6) Channelling Brooklyn with her Dark Romance - a lite version. All existing pieces from last year and earlier. To me the pendant, fitted jacket, boots and floral skirt fit in with the concept.

7) Last week I went to Waiheke Island for a 10km run with friends. I went for an ocean swim (weather was mild but overcast). Everyone else thought I was crazy.

8) Trying flats with the crazy culottes. Third wear of the culottes. I love them but it will be hard to get to 30 wears. I am wearing them about once every second week.

We are just starting summer, and I am so done with the cold!

Your transitional looks are terrific, and they look like they will serve you well.

Not sure I get the 30 wears, but I love those culottes! So fun, and you could pair them with a bright long-sleeved shirt, too.

Lots of great silhouettes! I like the red jacket a lot and the culottes are fab! You might surprise yourself by wearing them more than you expect.

I agree - I think they would be great with a tomato red top or even a green one - I don't have the right thing at the moment.

The 30 wears thing is trying to ensure you get 30 wears from your clothes. I am not perfectionist about it - some obviously get a lot lot more....jeans, boots, simple cardigans etc.. But if I wear these once a fortnight through May-October I will only be at 12-14 wears for the year.... I don't track but since these are pretty bold I have been noting mentally when I have worn them.

Sorry Shevia we cross posted. I liked the jacket here with the patterned blouse - nice simple Sunday look. I will repeat this I am sure.

I have only worn the culottes with my three long sleeve black tops which limits things a bit, I have mixed up the shoes to see what I like the best.

I love the red jacket with the silver shoes, and the blazer and skirt with the tall boots. Keep working those great culottes!

Well, I love those culottes SO much and I feel sure they will have longevity in your closet. You may get 30 wears yet, and even if you don't, the JPW quotient will be high.

All of these looks are great! The red is fabulous on you and so is the fun lilac scarf!

All the outfits are great! I especially like the red leather jacket outfit you wore for the movies - such a nice cheerful and chic casual look. I also love your take on dark romance - great, a bit retro look, feminine and chic. And the culottes outfit is absolutely fabulous - love all about it! Must wear all the time.

All are lovely, really well done. I think some statement earrings with the culottes outfit would be great too. My fave is the red jacket outfit. Quite funky with the silver shoes! I’d never have thought of doing that.

Thanks Jussie - it was a fun movie!! I agree I did need something extra today and earrings would have been good. I tried a necklace but it felt wrong and my scarves are not right either. Really good suggestion!!

Thank you Katerina - I have battled with this red leather jacket but since I had the collar removed I much prefer it. I liked the dark romance a bit too but I won't be challenging Brooklyn too much as this is about the only version I can do.

Thanks Suz, the lilac scarf is fun- sometimes a small nod to a trend is enough. And the culottes are fun and easy to wear but I am limited in the tops I have that work - at the moment only black ones. I am focussing on a new bag and maybe shoes at the moment so the tops will have to wait.

Angie - I remember you liking Whiplash. It is intense and thought provoking - luckily my sons have not encountered a teacher like that. I do want to see Dunkirk and the Darkest Hour as well (I saw a couple of the Oscar movies earlier in the year - I Tonya and The Post - but missed a lot of them as it was mid summer. And thanks for the nice comments.

Sigh! Impossible to choose between ombré (scarf) and dark romance! Those are my favourites of course. Love the culottes too. The scarf in outfit 4 looks interesting too. What’s the pattern? Great idea to remove the collar from the jacket so that it suits your style preferences. Looks fab.

I forget you live on an island, so of course you swim in the ocean. I never think of doing that. I grew up where the ocean is very cold.

I like all of your outfits, especially the crazy culottes. You should wear them every week.

I saw Isle of Dogs with a couple dog friends, and we really enjoyed it.

Sal, I Tonya was good. Different. And very sad since it's ALL true. I didn't enjoy The Shape of Water or Three Billboards that much, and am in the minority. See Get Out, though. That was interesting and poignant.

I love all these outfits, and your lilac scarf (never say never, I guess). The crazy culottes really work for me, and I think it's nice to have some wildcard pieces that aren't necessarily workhorses but add a dash of fun.

Thank you Christina - yes I was quickly a hypocrite so I was caught out. I don't have lots of pieces that go with it but even with black it provides a lift on our gloomy winter days!!

Thanks Angie - it is definitely movie season here both out and in so I will look out for those ones. The Darkest Hour is first on my list for a movie night in.

JAileen - while I live on an island it is normally 45 mins to the beach one way and 1.45 the other coast.... but close in North American terms!! I went to a small island, Waiheke, which is one of the most gorgeous spots. We went by car ferry. The water here is warmer than Washington and Oregon, and around Vancouver as well but not tropical. I love ocean swimming - very good for my soul.

TG - thank you very much. I felt the navy and lilac skewed a little cool on me but it still worked.

Brooklyn - if I don't get sufficient wear from the ombre scarf I will post it to you. The black scarf with red and gold and white accents worn with the black dress actually has a New York scene on it - I love it. I bought it to wear with the red jacket and black clothes to link them but am yet to try it yet. With this dress I needed different shoes or boots to make it work.

Swim in the sea off Britain at this time of year and you are talking cold water shock.Having said that some people do but they tend to wear wet suits and be training for triathlons ,for the casual swimmer such as myself a nice heated pool is what’s required!

More love for those culottes. As the weather gets cooler, can you wear them with tights, boots/booties, and wear them with that red jacket.

You're brave, going for an ocean dip at this time of year! The beachside town near me just opened a new water play area for kids. Our winters are so warm that it's been a popular spot already....but it's too cold for me.

I love your transitional style and yay for swimming when it is cold. I am the biggest wimp when it comes to swimming in the ocean in temps less than 40C!

Love the Brooklyn inspired ensemble - it definitely has the Sal twist to it! You look awesome in all of these, but the culottes always make me happy. Some rules, such as the 30 wears one, need to be broken when it comes to fab finds like these.

Thanks Bijou - if I waited to 40C I would not be able to swim in the sea because it never reaches that here:) And I do agree with the 30 wears that the odd statement/special occasion piece will struggle.

Helen- normally children are the brave ones aren't they for swimming. I had sore legs after my race so enjoyed getting them in something cold.... Thanks for the comments.

Joy - thank you. I have worn with knee high boots and I like that look. I don't have simple black ankle boots that will work nor black flat shoes which is a bit of a hole. I bought navy ankle boots this year that I do love but they are a bit harder to incorporate than black would have been.
