We had a little cold snap today and I finally had the chance to wear my new Zara coat.

It's over a cami and short black skirt and my ankle boots are Nine West. The brooch is from Etsy, Chanel inspired, not the real deal.

Looking at the pic, I'm a little perplexed at the high waist. Should I have worn something a little longer under it that peeks out the bottom, or will that accentuate it even more? I'm quite short-waisted with a large bust. I tried it over dark skinnies and it didn't look any good. Because it's light weight, it will be perfect for Winter, but I want to make sure I wear it the best way.

Suggestions/advice would be most welcome!

I think I would wear something longer than the coat. It looks a bit short like this to me, but it may be the picture angle. Why didn't you like it with the skinnies?

It looks like a 3/4 length coat and intended to wear over longer pieces. Like Shevia, I wonder why you didn't like it over skinnies.

Photo with the skinnies please. It seems like such a classic coat, I would think it would look great with a variety of pants and skirts.

I think the suggestion to try a longer skirt under it is a good one. Also -- how did they style it on the Zara site? That could be useful info.

The picture angle does make it look a bit shorter than it is, but it feels too short to wear with bare legs....so it's quite short (considering my age).

I can't find the coat on the Zara site or when I google it, but I have found similar styles and they almost all style the coats with skinnies. My idea was to style it a bit mod 60s, like the pic below, but it's not really working.

I will try it again with skinnies and post a pic. In my searching, I also saw someone wear it like me but with flat OTK boots, which I have. I might try that too.

Will report back with pics (how exciting!)

Firstly love the coat. It's gorgeous. It looks like you are wearing it as a dress here? Did you leave it on all day like this? I personally think it's a bit short to wear as is (just my opinion so take it or leave it:) ) - oh and not related to age at all - I just like a bit more coverage:) . I can see this worn with leather or faux leather leggings or skinny pants/jeans. Even over a wide leg pant could look amazing. I actually think it it would work best over pants than skirts BUT having said that I can also see it over a midi length knit pencil skirt.

I did wear it as a dress Deborah, but I had a short skirt underneath.

Here are some more pics, one showing a different angle as I wore it today, one showing it with OTK flat boots and one with skinnies. The flash made them look more faded than they really are. The fading is quite subtle.

I LOVE the idea of faux leather leggings. I've never worn a midi length skirt.....but I'm up for some experimentation next time I shop. I do have some great pin striped wide leg cuffed pants I can try it with.

I think if you were it sixties style the tights might look a bit better if they were not sheer- and more solid like the model. I think you can really pull off this sixties look !

I am not sure about where the waist is hitting- it looks almost empire. Is it petite ? I love it with the jeans and the idea of leggings is great as well.

It is a super cool mod style and the color is great as well. YLF !

Just want to clarify that you look fab. I just know that I would feel a bit self conscious with a dress/skirt that length - more about how I would feel than how I looked (you have great legs btw). I agree with Sheila. A fully opaque tight would work better (or leggings?). An opaque tight or leggings with those boots would be awesome. And I love the jacket over the jeans.

That's a great idea Sheila! I will look for some solid tights to try the 60s look.

It isn't petite but the waist is higher than my natural waist. The belt seems to accentuate it, but the coat has belt loops so I don't think it will look right to wear without the belt.

Edited: Thank you for your helpful comments Deborah. I don't mind wearing shorter lengths sometimes but it can be a fine line, particularly for work, so I think completely opaque tights will do the trick for the 60s look.

My 87yo very conservative mother is usually my skirt/dress length gauge. Me: Is this too short mum? I don't want to look like a real housewife. Mum: Don't be silly, wear it while you can. Before you know it you will be old like me and want to hide everything.

What a wonderful coat! I think the high waist is intentional. As someone a bit long waisted, with a bust, I'm noticing a lot of the waistlines are hitting somewhere between the natural waist and a typical empire style. I don't like it on myself at all, but I think it works on you here. Your legs look terrific --- I like the booties with opaque idea best with a skirt, and I second leather jeggings, or black skinnies, too. I wonder what high contrast white skinnies would look like? That could be interesting.

The coat is great with knee highs - and I also think great with the skinnies. By itself, with so much leg exposed... it looks uncomfortable, even on the model.

I am going to be the dissenting voice here...... I totally freaking love this look!!! Very mod, very Jane Birkin!!! I agree with your mum- wear it now, tomorrow may be too late! You have the legs to pull this off so have some fun!
Have you tried it with a column of black underneath eg with black waxed jeans, black tank, black boots?
Outstanding ovation from me!
