So not happy about my DD getting her first tattoo (see "Off Topic" thread) so DH and I high tailed it up to LA to check out the place she'd be showing up later in the afternoon to Do The Deed. I knew we couldn't change her mind, but we could at least go and see if it was a decent operation. It was a nice place with a really nice vibe and people. I talked to the guy at the desk, explained my concerns and asked for him to go through their safety and cleanliness protocol for me. He couldn't have been nicer. We went to a bar across the street and drank. By now my kid has inked herself forever.

Can only commiserate. So far mine are tatoo-free, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. You did what you could. And at least, when she's fifty, most of the people she knows will also be saying, "WHAT was I THINKING?"

P.S. The outfit's just right: serious, with an edge.

You have my sympathies. A child of 18 has no clue what they will value 30 or 50. I remember Cher on the Tonight Show trying to cover her arm tattoos and had started to have them removed but saying that it was a long painful expensive process.

I am not up to date...I thought you were getting the tattoo! Well at least you stood by with style and grace. It's hard when they start making choices we don't agree with and can't do much about. Cute earrings!

Well, at least you look great. It's hard when they are old enough to make their own decisions and we don't agree with them. Still, you handled it well I think by checking the place out. I hope that at least helped alleviate some concerns.

I remember my mom not being very happy when I got my ears pierced at age 18. My DD got 2 piercings in her ears before age 18 and then freshman year in college got a cartilage piercing and called me afterwards crying because it hurt a great deal afterwards for a while. After seeing your post yesterday I asked if she was still considering getting a tatoo and she said she was still on the fence regarding it. I did, however, say to her that now that she was over 21 that I have no obligations to pay for any medical interventions on her behalf if complications arose as a result of the tatoo.

You're a great mom. But don't worry - tattoos aren't scary. Sometimes, they are just a reflection of our personality.

I might not be the best person to comment or put your mind at ease because I do have 2 tattoos myself. But to me, they marked something very important in my life and I WANTED a reminder that will stay forever.

I have a tattoo of my husband's name done artistically ---- I got that after our wedding and it's on my shoulder so doesn't show often. I lost my beloved dog last year and it broke my heart. I have her name tattooed on the inside of my right wrist and I haven't worn a bracelet since because I WANT TO LOOK at it all the time.

I hope you're not going to worry about it. You're going a great job by being such a wonderfully supportive mom.
