WIW: To see owls

We have a great horned owl family in a park, at the edge of town. We had to wade through water to see them.

WIW: Columbia Anytime Outdoor boot cut pants, waterproof Timberland boots, and a new Eddie Bauer soft shell jacket. The wind was howling when we got to the park, so much so that I had a hard time opening the car door. The jacket was just perfect for the wind. I got it with our upcoming trip to Alaska in mind. My Timberland boots are old and kind of ratty looking, but still waterproof!

Two babies were still in the nest, but the third one had left it. It can’t fly yet, but is moving around the tree, getting stronger. This behavior is called branching. The adult owl is the mother. We didn’t see the father, but he was probably nearby. The final picture is my husband. He goes birding four to five hours every day. He’s really living his best life!

Great photos. We have a family of great horned owls in our neighborhood. I saw the adult about a week ago and today I was lucky enough to see an adult and two owlets sitting in a tree. Wish I had my good camera with me, all I had was my phone, but I think you can see that they are owls.

I like your outfit, too.

Rachy, thank you. Normally I would wear my Salomon hiking shoes, but the water would have been a little too deep for them. I’m not sure how long I’ve had these boots - ten years, maybe?

Merwoman, thank you. I’ll probably take a combination of jackets and hoodies for our upcoming trip. We’re going to the Aleutian Islands which will likely be pretty wet and cold, and also to Anchorage and Homer which will be warmer. This jacket could work as a layer on Unalaska, or a standalone in Anchorage. I really liked it!

Love owls! We have barred owls in the woods behind my house. Sometimes we hear them talking to each other at night when we're sitting on the back porch.

Oh, the owlets are so cute! We are complete birding novices and our favorite book organizes the birds by color: all the black birds in our area of the Sierras are lumped together.

That jacket sounds and looks really good! I also like the pants. It's nice that you have outdoor gear that looks good on you, in flattering colors, and is highly functional. Your DH looks like a stylish birder, too. The owls are amazing; thanks for sharing the photos!

Brooklyn, thank you. I usually wear the boots in winter. They’re not insulated, but because they are taller, they’re warmer.

Sal, thank you. My husband’s everyday uniform is hiking clothes. He usually wears long sleeved nylon shirts, and the vest he’s wearing has twelve pockets!

Star, I love owls too.

Suntiger, how lucky! In the last year or two I was in a zoom meeting and my husband passed me a note - there was a great horned owl on the power pole in our backyard! So of course I had to leave the meeting to go look at it. We had never had one in our yard before.

Allora, thank you. The water was only two to three inches deep. The trees are in an area with a stream running through.

BlueJay, thank you. The jacket is called dusty denim or something like that. The babies are just so precious.

cat2, I’ve seen those books - they’re really good for starting out. Because my husband is so hardcore, I’ve picked up quite a lot over the years, but I am no expert. We have the guides on our phones, but I think they’re hard to see out in the sun. I really like Sibley’s guide. Where are you in the Sierra? We’re probably seeing the same birds!

Sharan, thank you. Birding is like hiking, except for the walking part. So when it’s cold, I really need to bundle up. So I have a lot of jackets. This one is a winner for wind. One thing I like is the pockets have zippers. I have a couple of Lands End jackets that don’t have zippered pockets. Well, I’m not going to put anything of value in them.

I love owls! And your Timberlands.

I hear owls in the woods behind our house but haven’t spotted them yet. Hard to see them! But we had a huge black vulture hanging out in a tree in the back of our yard the other day. He was just hanging out there, wings spread, for like half an hour, freaking the dogs out.

We also heard wild turkeys in the woods last week. And robins and wrens have nests in our yard. One of the really lovely things about living in the woods in the springtime!

Janet, owls are very hard to spot. Probably the best way to find them is to follow their calls, and narrow it down from there. I look for a wide spot on the limb, and sometimes it’s what we’re looking for.

A few years ago we were way out in the country, and several wild turkeys accosted us. They never touched us, but they were really aggressive. Apparently other people had fed them. I was struck by how beautiful they were, not at all like farm turkeys.

A barred owl had taken to roosting in a tree in the ravine behind our house. We had a perfect view from our master bath, and checked on him daily. It seemed like he was keeping an eye on the activity around the bird feeder! DH told me about how crows don’t like owls and will hassle them, and then a few days later, we witnessed this very behaviour as several crows went at the owl on his perch, until he flew away. He’s moved farther into the ravine, but we still see him from time to time.

One evening recently a great horned owl took up a watch from our roof. This isn’t a great photo - taken with an iPhone through windows and screens - but you get the idea.

We get all kinds of wildlife in our backyard, but this year has been busier then usual. We even had a pair of ducks visit our pond last month!

Cardiff girl, thank you. Several years ago we were in another park and one of our dogs, while on leash, found an owlet. It was near the parking lot, and people often let their dogs run free there. We called a rescue organization and were advised about transporting it. Anyway, I held it in my lap for about a half hour! It was older than these babies, but still didn’t have any feathers. It was making clicking sounds with its beak. A few months later, we visited it the day before they were going to release it, and it turned out to be a she.

Carla, thank you. I wore the ball cap instead of my Tilley because I thought I might want my hood up, which I did, in the fierce wind. Having an owl on your roof is pretty special!

Like Carla, we have a barred owl in our ravine...we also see a Great Horned from time to time, though not recently.

I like owls, especially the great horned. They often sit on the roof at night and call to each other. We are now getting hummingbirds. So far I have only seen a male black chinned this spring, but usually we also see rufous around. We had an Easter duck who laid and sat on them u til the next was attacked one night and eggs scattered and broken. I hope the mother duck is ok. We have not seen her since this horrible incident. We blame local coyotes or neighbors who let their cat out loose at night.
