WIW: To play the ukulele in church

Our church choir takes the summer off, so various people and groups fill the void. I joined a small ukulele group, and we played three pieces in the service today. We all wore Hawaiian shirts. I bought my top in Kauai so no matter what it looks like, it’s a Hawaiian shirt! I really enjoyed it, and apparently the congregation did too, because several people came up to me afterwards, to tell me so.

How fun for your group to dress in Hawaiian shirts. I bet your group sounded lovely!! What a great way to use your musical talent to serve your church family!

AJ, thank you. One of the members is a great musician. She made us sound good.

FashIntern, thank you. I nearly wore dark green pants, but had worn the white pants last night to a play, and they were still clean!

Cardiff girl, thank you. I might not have been at performance stage either. I started lessons in January. I was helped along by having taken numerous sessions of guitar lessons. One of the pieces was too fast for me, but the other two were easy.

Torontogirl, thank you. This shade of green, army or pea green, is sort of the color of my eyes.

Katerina, thank you. We went to Hawaii a few years ago for my mother’s 90th birthday, and this top was my souvenir. The shop we went to carried tops made by locals.

The top is a lovely color on you. Where did you get your ukulele? DS2 wants to play but all he finds are plastic ukes for kids. We even looked in Maui. He plays guitar and violin and viola.

Preppy Pear, thank you. The sandals are Johnston and Murphy. My husband gave me the uke for my birthday a couple years ago. This is the second Fluke we’ve had. We were at a Hawaiian festival in the SF Bay Area 15-20 years ago and bought a plum colored one. When our son was in high school, he played that uke at a summer church service. He lives in Minnesota now, and took it with him.

Suntiger, thank you. I had no idea how popular the uke is here. I started taking a class through Olli (Osher Lifelong Learning) last winter, and was surprised to see 35 or 40 people in the class.

Wonderful - both the outfit and event. We attended a Unitarian church for a while that had the best music, and really encouraged its talented members to participate and perform regularly.

My 89 year old Dad is a huge fan of/participant in the Osher Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He has regularly taken classes for many years, and he even taught a few. It's such an awesome program. I'm encouraging my now-eligible husband to get involved here through the Johns Hopkins program in Maryland.
I love Kauai, and bought ukuleles there for my sons and my Dad a couple of years ago. I attend a Saturday morning yoga class that ends with us singing a mantra to the uke during meditation. It's my favorite part. Rock on!

I love your authentic Hawaiian shirt! Sleeveless is a nice twist on the usual short-sleeved version. Your ukelele is pretty, too.

Laurie, thank you. That’s wonderful about your dad. Our uke teacher is a man in his 70s. He’s on tour this summer. I’m not kidding. He’s a great uke player.

Aquamarine, thank you. I think people used to associate the uke with just Hawaiian music, but you can play anything on it. For me, it’s a lot easier to play than guitar. I’ve had a guitar for 25 years, and I still can’t play it.
