WIW: Time to fill in the neckline?

Hi all,

I need your brutally honest opinion:

I wore the following to an outdoor evening event. Love the color and fit, and in the mirror, I was totally happy with the neckline. No cleavage, no turkey neck, no problem, right?

Wellll, after photos, I`m not so sure. Is it time to start filling in with layered pearl chokers or Y necklaces? or just nix lower necklines? I hope the photo gives you enough of a view.</p> <p>Again, honesty please. I`d rather hear out loud from you whatever those in person might be thinking!

I will take the plunge.

I see no need to fill it up- your decolletage looks good to me. The dress is a great shape on you. I would say otherwise if I thought so - I honestly think you shouldn't doubt yourself.

In saying that, I think a small gold or silver necklace would actually enhance this dress. Or a bracelet. Not to cover up, but I think it would be very pretty. I have noticed this about my own looks, and am now wearing a gold chain all the time just to add the touch of sparkle.

Column, I love that dress and don't think you need to fill the neckline yet unless you would feel better doing so. You might watch for a scarf or two that would look good with the dress and be light weight. Is the print white? a pale pink?

Sal: Thanks for diving in! And thanks for reassuring me. I should know better than to trust the mirror. Always photograph first! I do love the idea of delicate gold jewelry. Forgot to mention I was wearing statement pearl earrings that you cannot see, which is why I thought I didn`t need a necklace.

Joy: I appreciate the compliment on the dress; I love it, too. The empire waist helps lengthen the leg line and this is the only knife-pleat skirt currently in my wardrobe. The color is almost full-on orange, sort of a neon tangerine-to-orange. The brush strokes are ivory or soft white, although they do look pink in the photo.

I think it looks fantastic on you. No worries about the neckline, it’s great. But I think if this feels like it looks a little too bare and needs a bit of embellishment, I would wear either a pair of dangly earrings or a necklace that sits nicely in the neckline. It doesn’t need to be anything big, just a little something, depending on your taste and comfort level.

I think a necklace would look nice - but I always think that! I don’t think you “need” to wear one to cover up.

Neckline seems good to me... but it did occur to me you may want to cover up anyways to keep it that way. I swear the sun is harsher than it used to be.

I like it as is Column. I somehow have the same question for myself though and probably change up whether I wear a necklace ( often just a slender chain) or not. Especially depending on how dangly or obvious the earrings are. Because I wear glasses and like earrings, sometimes I feel there is too much going on if I wear a necklace as well. With stud earrings I would be more likely to. I don’t like too deep or wide a V, but yours looks just right.

The dress is lovely and you look great! Summery! For myself, I would wear a necklace, but that is because I love jewelry. The v neck is very flattering on you. You do not need to fill the space. I am guessing that your smile was the perfect accessory.

Looks absolutely fine to me too.l know how you feel though,l keep checking with my daughter now as to the level of “cover”I need but as she points out ,people like us who are aware of these things are the least likely to need to be told.That is a very lovely dress so enjoy wearing it.

I, also, can't see anything possibly "off". I do like the idea of adding a bit of sparkle, though - just because of the lines of the dress and that it's a nice way of directing attention to our faces.

I'm the neck and chest skin police, and I see no need to issue a ticket here. Dress looks dynamite on you, btw!

(To clarify: I don't believe we all have to cover up things that aren't great. Whatever floats your boat etc.)

Honestly the only time I really notice this ‘issue’ is when my mother inadvertently reveals way more than she realizes, and it’s because I know she’d be horribly embarrassed.
I have a bony chest which a thankfully small number of people in my life have suggested is a problem - starting in my early 20s! - so I’m both aware of and over it. I do like to fill the space sometimes with some plain lower cut tops, I think because I’m short waisted it helps my proportions somehow? So it’s nice to have scarves and necklaces as completer pieces, but I see this as a positive, fun thing, not fixing a negative

Single dissenter here. I think it would look better filled in a bit. I don't think it is immodest though, and I am speaking from my experience, but you have said we look fairly similar.
So it was me, I would either wear a cami/second base type thing or wear a chunky necklace that filled it in a bit. Your idea of a Y shape necklace would work well too.

The dress is beautiful and you look great. You don't need to cover anything, but you can wear necklace if you want to add some elegance. I like to wear necklaces.

Thank you, everyone! Your comments are most instructive. I was hoping to reply to everyone individually, but you have--in the best sense--overwhelmed me!

I have looked around, and I am keen on some multi-strand, perhaps even colored coral or pearls to fill in. I think I will like the look better. But I am very relieved to know I was not inappropriate. I think that is the question we are essentially posing when we ask: "Is this too young for me?"

This dress also reminds me that American designers rely too much on bodycon for hourglass figures. The genius of this dress is that it showcases the (empire) waist without hugging anywhere else. I bought it via Hobbs end-of-season sale last summer at a virtual steal. The British have definitely invaded my closet!
