This is my final post about WIW during Summer. Here I’m covering cool and neutral colour combinations.
I like cool colours but they don’t suit me, at least near my face. I usually wear cool colours by mixing them with warm colours. Sometimes with warm toned clothing, sometimes just with warm toned shoes and/or accessories. My gold sandals and cuffs are particularly useful for warming up an otherwise cool toned outfit. Another option is to wear warm toned clothing and cool toned accessories.
My favourite cool colour combination by far is blue and green. Love, love, love blue-green combinations so much!
In Summer my neutrals are black and light to mid value browns (eg tan, camel, cognac). I also treat olive and dark gold as neutral or almost neutral.
This Summer I have been very interested in pursuing graduated/monochromatic combinations of gold, olive and brown. Or more contrasting mixtures of olive that include black or dark brown and lighter neutrals (like tan or beige type colours). Similar to the hyena picture.
Most of these photos were taken towards the end of Summer, by which time I had become enamoured with drop/basque waist skirts. It started with the rust coloured smock waist skirt from Zoe Kratzmann that I bought in Spring (pic 14). I had some doubts about it when I bought it. Usually that spells doom. But this time, just to totally confound future purchasing decisions, my Spidey senses were completely wrong. It proved to be a real workhorse. I like the way it sits flat on my hips then flares out (as opposed to flaring out from the waist). I also like that it is a pull on style and stretchy around the waist and hips. Comfortable, washable and a great length for sun coverage.
I became so besotted with the style that I sought out similar style skirts in other colours. First I DIYed my own version from a dress (pic 4). Then in January I hit a mother lode of linen versions on clearance @Seed. I dyed 2 of them. By the end of Summer, I was wearing these skirts almost exclusively. And, surprisingly for me, I did quite a lot of colour blocking. Usually patterns are my go to for Summer, so the switch to solids was a nice change. And they certainly offer more versatility, from a mix and match perspective.
The last picture is a screen shot of part of my “desert rose” mood board. Over the course of the Summer I had a go at interpreting most of the pictures. That made Summer interesting, despite the silhouette constraints imposed by sun, heat and humidity.
Now, with the weather starting to cool, I’m looking forward to changing my silhouette. Bring on the pants, jackets and boots! It’s going to be wild
