Rented this beautiful dress for 2 outings last weekend.

1) Wore to attend a performance of Natashia, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.

It's a musical adapted from a section of Tolstoy's War and Peace.

Even though most people do not dress up, I get a kick out of adding a bit of the play's flavor to my outfit. So my mind went to the rich tapestries of the time, winter, and formal gowns. This dress fit that vibe, but I wanted to dress it down, since I would be wearing it more formally the next day.

I thought the bohemian earrings picked up the pretty blue of the dress. Originally, I thought to wear a meshy turtleneck under the dress to correlate with my intended winter vibe, but we had a warm spell over the weekend and suddenly it felt like early summer. So the blush gold shimmer scarf will have to do. Then I adjusted my footwear to my lighter patent booties to bookend the scarf. It turned out a bit funky and spunky but I went for it!

2) Wore to a casino themed cocktail party for hubby's work. Here I went more traditional with pearl cluster earrings and my workhorse black leather pumps. Brought the scarf with me in case the air conditioning was too high. (It was set at a comfortable temperature.) I felt good in this look.

1 dress, 2 different vibes with subtle changes...how did I do?

I say killer. Keep dressing up! This does not look like a dress that would drive you mad during a performance for being too constricting plus when you're at home you can twirl.

You look very beautiful in both and I especially like the boots. You could try the same dress and boot version with a more substantial top too, like a sweater or jacket.

I appreciated how you dressed up for the musical in the rented dress. 0ur musicals were usually held at a fancy venue pre Covid so people are used to dressing up. Most older women are in winter in black skirts or trousers with dressy tops and toppers and shoes although there are lots of stairs.when someone asks what to wear to the symphony, I tell them black bottoms a basic top and dressy jacket and shoes. You can't go wrong with this combo. Some will be more dressed up but many will wear what you are wearing, especially in winter when walking to the car is a cold trek. Be sure shoes are comfortable for lots of standing and walking and stairs.

I want your dress, AJ!!!! I love everything about it! That it is patterned, the kind, the scale and the colors of the pattern, the amount of shine included, the texture, the cut& the length and the amount of skin on show. I have to attend a formal wedding in august and cannot find something like this- yours would 100% fit the bill for me!!!(now sobbing...:-)).

What a lovely dress! I saw that show on Broadway a couple of years ago, and some of the audience members were selected (or paid?) to sit on stage as extras in party scenes. Wouldn’t you have been perfect for that!

April - I didn't even think of twirling! Hmm...the material is on the stiff side, so most likely will not twirl anyways. It was a pain to get into, because of the side zipper and the tight bodice. Definitely need a helper, which many of the reviews mentioned. However, once on, it was easy to move and sit in.

Maybe you will have luck finding it second hand or a similar style? I will say that it is very fitted in the bodice and I had to go up two sizes because of my broad rib cage. I also think it best suits someone with a long torso.

Ummlila - There was seating options to sit on stage and so it looked like you were part of the show and it gave a theater in the round experience. However, I preferred the cushioned regular seats.
