Wiw: some questionable outfits +ETA

Hi guys. Well winter has set in properly and I’m getting bored with my winter clothing. Happens every year. The last few days I have tried to still put some interesting stuff together anyhow:
1) Semi-dressy(pics 1-3): Star top, has an elastic bottom which I don’t love, but hopefully it’s jfe. I rely heavily on these black straight leg jeans, and will start doing try ons soon for “succession planning” lol.
2) Casual(pics 4-5): I liked the navy sweater, jeans, scarf and lime shoes. However I wonder if this cardi is looking too slouchy around the shoulder/armpit area? I loved it the previous two winters, but just wondering if it still makes the grade.
3) Casual (pics 6-9): I tried to layer a necklace and a scarf for interest. Thoughts?? Also these are Tencel chinos. They don’t photograph that well, but they are a lovely powdery cadet blue with drapey-ness. I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on them, because I wonder if they are jfe. They are tricky to pair with shoes as boots really disturb the way the hem falls so I pretty much need to wear flats with them.

I LOVE...LOVE the way you do accessories. It looks so easy when you do it. Yet I know it isn't. The first scarf is particularly gorgeous on you. I love the combination of scarf and necklace (I will be trying it when Winter hits our area).

The sweater does look oversized on your body. The tencel chinos on the other hand look GREAT on you.

Sterling: Thanks for your lovely and helpful response. I am pleased the scarves and chinos are working. Phew. Now I just need to do some more assessment of the long cardi to determine if it still has a place in my wardrobe....actually come to think of it I think this might be its FOURTH winter which is pretty good. That first scarf is from French Connection who do stock some very cute scarves at times.

Love the dark blue and black combo in #1.

I'm no help on the cardi because oversized slouchy cardis are my weakness so my perspective is probably skewed!

The Tencel pants look great! Would they work with a heeled oxford or brogue type shoe? That could give you more options.

Try outfit #3 with the scarf from #2. To my eye the scarf in #3 looks a little overwhelming, and it doesn't relate to the necklace, so it seems less intentional than it might. I think the brown scarf in #3 would be great with one of your neutral-boho-dramatic-volume type outfits.

SarahD8: What a clever idea to swap the taupe scarf in outfit three for the blue floral one from outfit one. SMART! See ETA pics below! Also, yes, I think a brogue or oxford would possibly work with the chinos. I don't currently have any though...pity. Also I wonder if the lower half would look too masculine then? Because of the chino shape of the pants with a manly/chunky shoe? It just shows the importance of having the right "support act" for each piece doesn't it? Also, I have a weakness for slouchy cardi's too..... mmmmm.....

Hooray for trying to stave off winter boredom! Quite like the blue and black with little bits of light going on in #1. Is it the ties or the elastic itself that bothers you with that top? If it's the ties you might be able to knot it really good then cut the ends off so it has more of a streamlined band.

I don't mind the slouchy cardigan in the second look but then I have a very high slouch tolerance. I think you've done a good job countering the slouch with streamlined pieces underneath; adds enough structure. You could also push the sleeves up, if it's not too cold where you are, for an extra bit of structure.

Scarf/sweater pairing in the third outfit looks good to me, though I am unsure about the soft pants pairing; I think denim would add a bit of structure and sharpen the look up a bit. But I do quite like the pants, and I like them with those shoes. Can the hems be rolled up once or twice? If so that should let you pair with short boots

Oh I like the scarf-swapped version of #3 very much!

For me, masculine bottom (brogue/oxford + chinos) contrasted with feminine top (scarf + necklace) would feel right in my wheelhouse. But it depends on where your comfort zone is.

I like Aida’s idea of boots + rolled up chinos too!

What Aida said. My favorite is the second outfit. I'd try for another season out of that cardigan. The scarf looks wonderful.

Aida: thanks, and yes I agree with you jeans would’ve probably been better. Lol sometimes simple is best!! I was trying to re-invent the wheel wasn’t I?

Oooh, now that I see the texture of the yellow/citron sweater I love it even more! And Sarah's idea was brilliant!

I agree with Aida's points about the cardi. I'd be inclined to push the sleeves up (weather permitting) and that would add the structure you want. I also have a high tolerance for slouch.

Oh --- and Aida's point about structure with slouch is well taken. I have found for myself that I'm most comfortable in casual outfits that combine the two. It's one reason I wear a lot of denim -- it gives immediate structure and allows me to go softer on top if I wish. If I'm wearing a jacket (structure) I might wear denim bottoms but then again, I might also wear softer bottoms -- a skirt or softer pants.

Suz: great points you make, thank you. That makes me think maybe those Tencel chinos would work better with a structured jacket then? Like a denim jacket for example....yesss! I’m going to test that out ASAP. I really must stop buying chinos altogether though, as I don’t think they’re worth the hassle overall.

Great looks! I love the star top but can understand how an elastic waistband might not be ideal. The two scarfs are great and I like both versions of the citron top outfit. The second scarf really highlights the necklace which is an interesting look. The long cardigan looks good on you and I think you could wear it for at least one more season.

Jussie, maybe you need to recatogorize this slouchy sweater. In my part of the world, it would be seen as a light sweatercoat and worn as the top layer either in mildly cold weather or indoors somewhere on the cold side (like an indoor ice rink). But also especially with a bunch more layers underneath to fill out those sleeves. People have mostly given up on trying to scrunch a sweater like that underneath their puffer coats, because they get wrinkled and don’t play nicely with zippers.

I like all the outfits very much, Jussie. The black and blue combination in the first outfit is great and I like the black cami peaking out. The stars in the top lighten up the outfit and the top suits you very well.
The second outfit is really nice, I like how you combined the scarf with the earrings, fresh and cute. The cardigan looks good to my eye, I like the oversized style.
I love the large knitted scarf with the yellow top and necklace in the third outfit - very interesting, dramatic and cool combo. The colours are great together. It is also lovely with the second scarf as Sarah suggested, a softer look, but equally beautiful. To summarize, your winter looks are gorgeous!

3Style: Thanks for the useful feedback. I never thought of putting more layers under that long cardi- but what a good idea- looking at it as an overcoat more than a stand-alone item....makes sense...

You look great in the lime sweater! Maybe, like Angie, you glow in sour brights? Maybe the lack of color is what's making you bored of your winter wardrobe? I am trying out mostly neutrals my self for the moment, but I'm starting to miss the excitement of a pop of color!

Synne: thanks for your comment: yes! The lack of colour during winter is boring me terribly. Also I am missing wearing sandals.... I think the Tencel chinos would work best with my mustard sandals.... it’s really the footwear that troubles me in the chino photos now that I analyze it a bit more. And maybe the Tencel fabric itself looks too summery paired against woolen sweaters? Think I’ll wait until spring to wear them again. I’ll pair them with sandals and a denim jacket then....

I agree with Aida. Her advice is always so spot on.
I really like the third outfit with the scarf and necklace. Colour combination looks great on you too.
And I like the swap you did at SarahD8’s suggestion.

I don't see any of these as questionable - all look great to my eye!!

I really love 1!! I also love the lime top with both scarves. I vote keep the cardigan for cosiness alone. For the first time in a long number of years I do not have a long cardigan and I am missing having one!!

I struggled with shoes and chinos too - I agree to try a roll - I think ballet flats can be a good combo though with the masculine/feminine mix.
