Here’s our supper tonight: Potato pancakes (like latkes) with salmon, blinny with caviar . I stopped to pick up dinner because I’d heard people are being abusive to Russians & Russian restaurants. Turned out they’re Ukrainian. Fine by me! While I was waiting for my order, a guy came in & said his family had a room someone could stay in. They spoke for a minute, and he gave them his number before he left. The owner’s 72-year-old mother is on her way. She said people have been coming in every day, offering places to stay, clothing and other things. Most of the refugees, she said, won’t stay in Berlin. They’ll be registered here and then sent out to places around the country. We spoke briefly about Putin & his aims. She thinks my son and I have seen correctly that he really does not care about his people or how many soldiers (including generals) die.
Otoh, I had to laugh at a busker the other day, wearing a great big panda suit and waving a Ukrainian flag. People were putting money in the bucket at the bear’s feet.
