WIW: Socks with Sandals

So, noticing the just about universal hate for socks with sandals on Angie's trend report, I thought I'd be contrary and say that it can work.

These Shellys London sandals I've posted on the forum before, but here paired with some sheer gingham-pattern socks on a cool spring day in 2015. As with many trends these days, this one has been rolling around along the fringe for a few years already. Of course, "high" fashion provides a lot of over the top, silly versions of things we wouldn't wear IRL. And I wouldn't wear white tube socks with Birkenstocks (or, OK, any tube socks ever). But I liked this look and would wear others in the right weather conditions.

Suzanne - I like this. I agree that socks with sandals can work if the foot exposure is minimal.

I think, if you have the confidence and the right style - socks in heeled shoes can look very unique and trendy.
I would personally go for a closed toe court heel with or without ankle strap so that there is not too much going on down at my feet, but then again I am more of a skirt person.

BUT I do think this outfit is very trendy and looks very cool with the rolled up jeans! You're rocking it!

Nicely done! I like the socks and the sandals and the two together. The overall effect is that you have on booties, so I find it very subtle.

I admit that in most instances I don't go in for socks and sandals or socks with pumps, for that matter. Given that predisposition, I am surprisingly OK with your rendition. You did pull it off. And you are right about it simmering for awhile. I have an old jcrew catalog from '09 with sheer neon socks paired with pumps and such ...

I think that it can work on the right person with the right attitude and some brilliant styling, as you have just proven here as this looks really great on you. It is just too complicated for me to try on my own and thus I am staying away.

I was apprehensive opening this post due to the dreaded socks-and-sandals situation. But this really looks neat! Maybe I should check out the socks section next time I go shopping and see what is available. There are some fun socks out there!

I think your version looks pretty good, actually! The version I dislike is white athletic socks with Teva type sandals. I love Birkenstocks with handknit socks.

This looks great! I think heeled sandals may be necessary for this look to work (hence why I won't be doing it - most of my sandals already skew a little bit orthopedic and socks would just push them over the edge, lol).

On the other hand I do sometimes wear fun socks with my cutout lace up boots.

Thanks for the comments, all! So interesting to hear your takes on requirements for this idea to work--more shoe coverage, higher heel, less orthopedic shoe style, low contrast. And of course, hand-knit socks do get special dispensation. (I'm a knitter, but I've rarely knit socks. I use sock yarn for shawlettes. )

I never really thought about these kinds of factors. This little style lab seems to have brought out the kind of deeper insights that YLFers have about styling. I may well give this look a try with different combos and see what I come up with.
