WIW: skirted equestrian, not quite combat boots

I really liked look #4 in Angie's post this morning so I thought I'd see if I could pull off something similar. Here's what I came up with.

I don't have combat boots but I think my black ankle boots skirt the line between equestrian and Moto in an interesting/relevant way.

I'm on my phone so instead of typing out a tiresome list of other caveats I'll just say that I'm grateful for any observations or suggestions you care to share!

I think the boots look good. I'm having a hard time seeing the rest of the outfit because the photo is dark (darn winter light).

Haha, yeah -- dark outfit, dark winter, and I'm out of practice taking outfit photos. I tried to lighten the photos up and put the edited ones in my original post.

SarahD8, are you in Seattle?

I'd like to see this cute outfit with some light! From what I can make out - the boots work well with the skirt. Not sure about the long shirt with long cardi with the midi. Maybe a shorter top and cardi?

Angie, yes, I'm in Seattle.
The new photos are no better? Blast. Literally -- I've cranked the exposure up to the max, not sure what else to do.

Re: proportions, I noticed that the proportions looked off in the photo too. So much so that I went back to the mirror because I thought: "I don't remember this outfit looking that bad!" I am much happier with the proportions in real life. So I think it might be a photo angle issue (like I said, out of practice with outfit photos) with the lower half of my body getting foreshortened.

But, I'm interested in the proportions question in general. My top/cardi are substantially shorter than the jacket in the inspiration photo. My top/cardi hit right at the hip, just above the crotch. The jacket in the inspiration photo seems to cover the bum. But longer works?

The pics looks better, thank you. I like the cardi over the skirt! Needs a shorter top if it's going to be high contrast. A low contrast top could be fine at the length though.

Thanks, Angie. So, in theory where should a high-contrast top with this look hit on my body?

I guess this look is probably not for me. I would be unlikely to wear a low-contrast top because I rarely want to wear all-dark outfits. I would be unlikely to wear a shorter top because I don't like to expose my torso when I raise/move my arms. (I don't think I even have any tops that are much shorter than this tbh -- well, one summer top that I can think of but I am planning to lengthen it because every time I wear it, I have the problem mentioned above!) Oh well.

Thanks for helping with this, Angie. I get what you are saying better now. I tried tucking and yes, I can see how the line that creates between the top and skirt is more flattering from the front. But, I didn't like the way that looked from the side. So, I think for my personal priorities, I'd rather the less-than-ideal proportions from the front and feel more comfortable about the side view. That said, I will experiment with tucking/semi-tucking at a different time of the month IYKWIM.

Joy, thank you. It’s black (skirt, boots, tights), navy (cardi), and shades of blue in the top. I just love the back peplum on that cardi! Now I’m wondering about navy tights, hmmm....
