WIW: Sequins and Birks - YouLookFab Forum

Yesterday I was having a flashback to the days of Saved by the Bell and teenagers in the 90s/00s. All of this Fashion Era Challenge was inspiring me. Let's not mention the 2 hours I spent shopping on American Eagle. Oh, and I was missing the beach, and I've worn high heels a few days in a row. My feet were tired.

So... I paired what I love with what I love. Sequins. Favorite jeans. Birkenstocks.

I must say, I find Birks physically unattractive. For instance, I wouldn't wear them with anything but a pair of jeans or cargo pants. I know, I know. I can wear what I want. Somehow, style and taste win out over comfort. If I can get both, I'm happy. But I just feel...so...non chic, non pretty in Birks. I certainly would feel terribly amiss wearing them with a dress and clopping around town.

So there I said it.

But today, the Birks won. As did comfort and sequins. I tried to be all casual chic about it. Not sure if that was achieved or I just look like a college senior on spring break. HA!

minimal makeup -- concealer, bronzer, blush. My hair eventually was braided.

Ok, I'm sidestepping the Birks and saying that I like the daytime sequins a lot. And I always love your hair.

Diane, haha! You don't have to sidestep them I just feel unglamorous in them. And yet, their comfort is unsurpassed when my feet have taken a beating.

The sweatshirt is a winner. I've worn it 4 times in the 7-10 days. My hair thanks you <3 <3 <3 That haircut did a lot of good.

Hehe, I have a bit of a poison eye for Birks But I'm a big fan of comfort. Talking of hair...my hairdresser left without warning!!! Help!

Oh no! Whatever will you do?? I waited 3-4 months for mine to come back from maternity leave and have an open appointment. I'm not even kidding. Do you have any friends or acquaintances -- with beautiful hair of course! -- you could ask for a recommendation?

I'm very selective about who cuts my hair. My test for a truly wonderful haircut and good stylist is this: if my hair lays well and still look good a couple months later while growing out, it's a good cut. Granted, if you have super short hair or a high maintenance style, probably not gonna hold up to the Grow Out Test. But I have found it to be helpful.

I have a neighbour who may be able to advise, she's a retired hairdresser who works on reception part time now in a local hairdressers, so I'm going to ask. We also have a rather classy establishment run by a couple who win awards, but they may be out of my price range. I have a customer who uses them. Gotta sort something soon though, it really needs a cut.

Don't you live in CO? I'm pretty sure you can always get away with Birks, no matter what you're wearing. I feel like Birks in Colorado are like cowboy boots in Texas.

I had those Birks in the early 90s. My current silver two strap ones have a pretty different vibe, and I feel more attractive in them than I do in a pair of heels. :). You look great!

My Birks (in the early 90s too) had that nubuck feel but the sandal version ...not the mule. I was reliving the 60s in the 90s. I wish I had pictures. You wear them well! And I'm eyeing your hair. You have great hair!

I have those Birks but use them as house shoes. I agree, nothing is more comfortable after wearing heels!

The color and the shine of the top suit you perfectly. I don't mind Birks, and rather like them on the right person, but I think you are too glam for them! Hair and face beautiful as ever!

Diane, dontcha just hate it when you find these uber awesome stylists that cost more than a new dress and the meal ticket?? I got really lucky with my stylist. She is worthy of the big city and the price tag. But she lives nearby and while she's expensive for my area, she's still half of what I would pay if I went to the Big City. Hope it all gets sorted out soon! BTW, you just hijack away! I'm always up for talking hair, makeup, and clothes hehe D:

And I'm utterly fascinated because people do wear them with everything. I don't quite get it. I like a bit more formality to my footwear, I guess. Or perhaps, I'm just matchy-matchy- casual clothes+casual footwear??

alaskagirl, I keep seeing the more "edgy" trendy Birks around. Perhaps I need a pair of those... Although, I tried on a two-strap white pair sandal version and didn't like like them any better.

AM, okay those were also the rage in the 90s, when I was a kid. I didn't have a pair. And thank you!! I feel like they make my ankles look like toothpicks just because the feet are so large. It would probably help if I hadn't lost weight and thus gone down shoe size. I swim in the birks. (Not literally. They're so big I'd lose them if I went swimming in them.) My hair?! Aquamarine, they are so comfortable post-heel wearing! They're kind of like that icky green face mask that I would slap on after hard, tiring weekend. Looks terrible but feels so good.

Shevia, thank you my sweet friend <3 As for the birks...I feel awkwardly and uncomfortably casual in them. Not enough glam and heya-rita for me. I wonder if ballet flats are a better option for me. I'm still trying to decide upon a good casual flat shoe. Ballet flats perhaps? But they feel so proper. Perhaps I'm destined for a life of high heels...
