WIW: plaid inspiration and a small shift in style direction

One of my favorite shows so far of fashion week was Marissa Webb's low-key collection.

Recently I've been gravitating towards black and grey tweeds, plaids, masculine tailoring, and drifting away from avant garde black (not entirely!). Even the pieces I've pinned from Kate Lanphear, the reigning queen of solid black, are her most tweedy and androgynous.

Some of this is me finally, slowly giving in to the hipster aesthetic of my town. By hipster, I mean a bit vintage, a bit heritage, and a bunch of other things I can't put my finger on. Chambray shirts, classic oxfords, etc. There's a style trend in the fashion world I think of as "french hipster" (no idea if that name makes sense to anyone) - the less boho of Isabel Marant's looks, for instance.

Anyway, Marissa Webb's very wearable collection somehow crystallized some of the images I had in my head, plus as a 90s grunge teenager I loved that side of it. And as luck would have it, that plaid shirt I posted as a K/R last week is exactly the same plaid in her collection.

Image 1: My favorite look from her collection. Love the slouchy pants, the plaid, and the peacoat. I'm still searching for the perfect soft pants...

Images 2 & 3: My first-pass interpretation (with very wet hair and bad lighting...). Aqua plaid shirt, old BR wool sweater tied on my waist, R13 slouchy skinnies, comfy Paul Green heels.

Image 4: In which I try the fashion week streetstyle "coat as a cape on my shoulders" trend and find it good, with my standard Helmut Lang wool jacket (which adds a touch of my usual asymmetric black layers).

ps - while trying to open these photos, I accidentally printed them to my OLD job's office printer. I hope I cancelled the print jobs in time! Else, holy awkward, batman!

Ooooh nice! On you, and in the collection. (I was looking for current ideas for styling blush or lavender with black). The plaid looks great on you, and the jacket shoulder thing.

So interesting to see where you are going. And it makes sense, from what we have seen, of late. It's amazing how our place of residence can affect our style. More than many of us realize, I suspect.

But I like your direction, and I feel myself moving somewhere similar. More on that in another post.

Hope your photos did not turn up at the old job! But you looked great, so if they did, everyone will say -- hey, she is so cool!

This is me on pinterest! Feel free to check it out. I only started using it recently and I'm not as good at pinning inspirations as many of you. I also have a totally OCD attempt to collect images of all the clothing I own but it won't really work unless I take my own photos.

Love it with the jacket as cape and sweater at waist detail. The shoes read a bit conservative for what you're going for, I guess I see that as the danger of plaid. (ETA hope that is coming off ok…). In my case my frustration with plaid is that it needs edgy other pieces to de-prep the plaid.

Thanks for the style.com link. I've watched a few of the shows, need to get back at it.

As for pinning your own stuff, I buy most of my things on line so I save the pictures when I buy an item. I have a private folder of things I own. But I could see how, if you don't buy on line, it's more difficult. Sometimes if you have the exact or close name of something you can do an image search. I've found many stock photos that way.

CocoLion, good point about the shoes. I have a different pair of heels that are edgier and more like the runway version, but less comfortable and too fancy for work for me.

Now that I use pinterest, I grab an image every time I buy something new - but about half of my clothes are consignment and those are a bigger challenge. I love google though and I've been surprisingly successful at finding everything.

What a cool outfit: love the inspiration too! I was a bit too young for 90s fashion & feel permanently deprived as a result: I love all the plaid and lace up boots and little flower prints and oversized looks.

Um, if hipster = a little bit vintage, a little bit heritage, pretty sure I must be a hipster.

And I hope you cancelled that print job in time too!!!

E, your look reminds me a lot of what I think of as Portland hipster - often handmade / thrifted, creative and artsy.

I just heard back from my old coworker - one of the photos did print down there!! I'd emailed him right away last night, after canceling the print jobs, to let him know this might happen. Hopefully he's the only one who saw it! He sits closest to the printer but someone might have used it before he came in this morning.

I guess hipster is a good thing then? I have to admit, in my region hipster has some less than positive connotations. But I like all of the adjectives you use!

I've never been to Portland, but in my imagination it's fabulous. hehe

This looks just great! I know what you mean by French hipster style, and frankly would probably wear some of that if I could pull it off. But I'm glad to know that even those who can pull it off have embarrassing printer moments every once in a while!

Eek on the printer situation - that's totally something I would do.

Cocolion - I wish I had thought before to pin pics from all of my online purchases. Seem so obvious. What an easy way to keep track of what I buy/own. Great tip, thanks!

This style works so well for you, Greyscale. I can see why you're headed in this direction. You look hipster-ish, but not overly so--if you know what I mean. You've put your own twist on a popular style, and I'm loving it.

That's some good duping there! I especially like how you tied the cardigan around the waist while having the jacket over the shoulder. That is a twist she didn't show in your inspo photo. Can you dupe the shoe too?

but my feet weren't up to the heel height yesterday.

The ones I'm wearing have a wide ankle strap that's hidden under my jeans, so the effect is lost. But they sure are comfortable. Unfortunately, after a very intense dance class last night, it's Converse for the next few days for me.
