WIW : out with the old and in with the new

Here are a couple of WIW's from the last week.

Outfit one was worn to a nice restaurant on Christmas day, I love the Boden dress and felt very festive that day but the styling felt overly complicated and a little too romantic for my evolving tastes. As soon as I returned home I kicked off the booties and tights and felt myself again. I am longing to add simplicity to my soft style over the coming year. (Of couse it would not matter what Ben and I wore with DD Emmy looking so adorable).

By contrast outfit two which I wore to meet friends last night felt right. I attempted to debombshell a sporty pencil skirt with a dolman sleeve sweater and used black opaque tights to further simplify the line. I would have liked to wear the black heels but the thought of the slippery rain soaked pavements meant I opted for the lower heeled grey booties instead. I do have a real wardrobe hole for a black leather clutch (I am using a leather make up bag here but its does not cut the mustard).

So in the spirit of Hogmanay I am going to let out the old and bring in the new, ring in the changes and celebrate my evolving style over the next twelve months. Would you like to join me?

Your girls are precious! You're looking pretty good yourself! You're rockin' that red dress. I like the pencil skirt combo, too but the OCD neat Freak in me wants to tuck those strings out of sight- lol. Simplicity sounds like a good element to strive for in your day to day looks. I'm striving for more interesting looks in the new year.

You look stunning in both pics (and your husband and the girls are also pretty cute!) But I can see why you prefer #2 with its simpler, cleaner lines. I am also moving in that direction.

I love the cut of the red dress on you. I don't see a drastic difference in the styling between the dress and the skirt. In both your are wearing tights and booties. What is it about the looks that feels so differently to you?

I must say, those girls of your's get more beautiful every time you post a new and current photo. Truly, they are lovely -- just like their their mom. Emmy looks to really resemble you as she grows.

No wonder that's Teah's new favorite jumper!

Emmy and Teah look KILLER. That adorable dress on Emmy and that divine doggie jumper on a RATE little Teah with cuffed jeans. So stylish! It's hard for them not to steal the show

And your Ben looks ultra hip and fashionable. Nice hat and tartan shirt! And nice that we caught a glimpse of Domino too.

As for you, Jules - you are as pretty, elegant, poised, soft and ladylike as ever. I adore you in the red frock-tights-booties ensemble! But I hear you on feeling more yourself when you got home and simplified the outfit because that's the way your style is evolving,

All renditions of the second outfit are KILLER. LOVE!! That does look like the benchmark of your evolving look - more simple, just as ladylike and soft, a spot of hectic trend and lots of spunk. You've got it going on, sweetheart :). Do you love your long hair? It's so pretty!

I learn something every time that I am on here. I had no idea what Hogmonay was ( thank you Google ) and therefore was afraid to commit to it. LOL.

The girls look beautiful. My daughter would LOVE Teah's sweatshirt.

You look fantastic. I forgot how great you looked in red. I also love the skirt ( the outfit actually ) but the skirt makes it for me.

And yes, I am interested in simplifying. But more along the lines of not having so much that I just don't need because I don't have the life for it. Simplification is such a luxury.

Your girls are so darned adorable! Love their outfits and Teah's pose is making me smile big time! And doesn't hubby look handsome and festive with his cap on!

I can't stop looking at the outfit with the skirt Julie - it is so darned perfect! The proportions are amazingly good, love the detail of the skirt and the simple lines of the entire outfit. But it's also got a bit of edge - this isn't what one would consider a "regular" pencil skirt. And personally I really like the non black booties with it - gives it eve more of an edge.

I'm looking forward to seeing your style evolve over 2013. I'm also feeling a bit of a shift to a more graphic and modern interpretation of my style. Sounds like a fun year for all of us, doesn't it?

Your daughters are adorable! Great visual on your style shift! I think many of us are in the same boat. You look stunning in the red dress but exude even more personality in the sporty pencil. Can't wait for more of your WIW's!

Thanks for sharing the gorgeous family pictures. Your DD in #5 looks like a model.

I agree, the second outfit seems way more "you" -- I really like what you have done here. Black and white, modern, and so stylish. The tie adds a casual accent. I can't decide if I would prefer it tucked into the skirt however. Although that will make the outfit more dressy, so I think it's a good touch, just not the usual!

The red dress is a pretty color on you, but I agree it does not seem your style as much, it feels conservative. But I love the tights and booties you wore with it because then it seems more "you" (even though taking them off felt more "you" once you got home).

Jewell, thank you so much. I understand the OCD, the string is visible through the fabric if tucked, I may need to trim and stich the ends to form a belt.

TraceyLiz, the difference in styling to me are the pattern on the tights compared with a solid neutral, the delicate necklace is compared to a watch alone, the pleated handbag is replaced with a simpler model. But in essence you are right there is not much of a difference

Angie, I am very excited for your blog post. I have wondered if my desire for something simpler is a reflection of the fashion mood (Jil Sander and Celine), your own style reflections or a need for a little more calm in my wardrobe when life gets crazy. As to your question, I am enjoying the longer hair right now.

You have a beautiful family and Emmy looks like a mini-Julie. I'd love to join you in the spirit of Hogmonay, although it may be too late to find a herring to decorate and balls of fire would be frowned upon by the homeowners' association. Can I dress up Mags (the dog) and light a candle instead? You look lovely!
