WIW: modern classic or just classic

I know I'm a very classic dresser, especially when it comes to my work attire. I often hesitate to post my outfits wondering whether they are too boring for the forum. But in response to Alaskagirl's thread yesterday about what we're not reaching for... I decided to wear a skirt today. Not sure why I don't wear them more often in the winter. I'm not uncomfortable in the tights and slip. I guess it's a mental block.

The skirt is charcoal, the tights are slightly lighter charcoal, and the shoes are black. I'm also wearing my new love, my nameplate necklace purchased from Etsy (throwback SITC!)

It's a nice neat look. Interesting, tho, "classic" of any kind is not what comes to my mind. The word that comes to me is "contemporary."

Thanks, rachylou. That is interesting! I was recently watching the West Wing on Netflix, and I realized that their clothes all look so dated, with the exception of Donna Moss. They had dressed her in what I perceived to be a classic way, which was why I thought it still resonated for me.

That green is lovely on you. And the oxfords read as modern and a bit funky and retro at the same time. Nice mix! I'd say a core of classic, and you can take it in any direction you wish from there. It's great to see you post.

You look great! I'm with Suz, the heeled oxfords are a fun retro yet modern feeling element. I also have issues with slips; I've pretty much taken to devoting certain skirts to purely winter or summer, and I have lined my winter skirts with a built in slip so I don't have to deal with a separate one

I like Rachy's contemporary for this look and agree the heeled oxfords add the personality to this lovely outfit.

But I'm really responding because I'm completely incapable of ignoring a West Wing mention. I'm glad I'm not the only one who paid attention to the clothes!

I actually remember noticing that Donna was the only one who still looked current last time I re-watched some reruns, too. I think CJ's clothes were the ones that ended up looking the most dated to me, probably because her outfits had been picked to be more at the cutting edge of conservative business fashion circa 2000 (if that's not a total oxymoron) to go with her more high-profile job.

I too would call this "modern classic." Everything is polished and in proportion, and the oxfords add a bit of modern pizzazz. Your necklace length and style are just perfect for filling in the space of the V-neck. Great outfit!

Lol, Aubergine. I work for the federal government although not in the White House, so I get where the show's fashion is coming from. CJ's clothes probably were cutting edge at the time Josh's big baggy suits really bothered me as well.

Aida, good idea about the built in slip. Do you just sew a slip to the skirt or what? I've been having luck with pettipants.

Carole, the nameplate is this one. I totally recommend it as a gift.

Yup, Josh definitely wasn't going to win any fashion awards! I'm in DC too, so definitely familiar with awkward work clothing as only the feds can do it.

Liz, I've had a tailor/drycleaner stitch in slips before and I've also done simple stitching myself (nothing fancy, and probably wouldn't hold up to a wash like having a pro do it would).
