WIW: look away, fashion victim shown in live color

I really don't want to post this...someone compared it to a vivienne westwood outfit! Guess it was pretty outrageous. It all happened innocently enough, I want so much to use this royal blue dress but it is too short. I layered a longer sheer skirt under it and added black tights. With a whinning teenager this morning I had not noticed the tights were patterned until I put them on, so I just threw on my boots and black jacket and left.

I really regret that now. I felt so ridiculous all day, a fashion victim, someone trying too hard (see the blogger bib necklace also!)...and a woman out of touch with her age.

But, hey, live and learn and we all deserve a laugh now and then! ENjoy and go ahead, fire away, I can take it! (I didn't look at the picture this morning after pouty teenager took it, I should have, I would have changed!...)

By the way, these booties have been lowered in the heel about 2/3 inch (1.,5 cm). They are so much easier to walk in now! and they are still on the high side for me

Should I keep trying with this dress or let it go?

ETA: maybe put on a studded leather belt too?

You know what, I really like it-proportion is right and it does look like Vivienne Westwood outfit. To me, this is rather avangarde and believe me, I mean it as a compliment. YOu don't look like a fashion victim but rather as someone is not afraid to create a very individual outfit:)

So long as you wore it with confidence you can pull anything off & if it's not your thing oh well lesson learnt. Better to be outrageous than boring.

Except for you feeling a little odd about the pattern of the tights, did you like the rest? I do. I think the proportions are lovely and I love the color of the blue and that you styled it with the jacket and boots. Great idea to put the longer skirt under it.

Funny, I am surprised it would be liked. Guess regular stockings might have done it for me, but the patterned ones just make my face turn red!

I like it. I think just a little editing for the overall outfit - different shoes and stockings.

Honestly, I don't see *anything* wrong with the stockings at all. I feel the bib looks a little busy and competes with the stockings/jacket details/shoe details/hem peeking out, but I do like the "color" it adds.

I think a long silver necklace/pendant could be a nice touch, fwiw.

Overall, I think I like it. The necklace is a little too much contrast for me (something silver or darker might be my preference) but yes save the dress.
You could wear as tunic over leggings or skinny jeans perhaps?
I like it over the skirt.

I haven't been around much recently and don't know your style. Perhaps it was just a bit extreme for you to feel comfortable with it right now, but I do really like it!

This has such a fabulous edgy vibe to it - love it! and that cobalt colour is amazing on you!

The cobalt dress can definitely work. I like the layering. Maybe plain tights or sheer black stockings would feel more like your style.

I like it too! The proportions are great. Maybe this is one of these outfits you slowly have to get used to. Like you did too much new things at once? Every time that happens to me I feel like a fashion victim too, even though it maybe doesn't look bad at all.

What would make this outfit more you? Maybe you'd feel better with solid tights and a different necklace? But don't discard it completely, this has potential! You just have to tweak it until you feel comfortable in it.

Well, I am really surprised. Angie and Shannon, Joy and Astrid, giving the thumbs up!

Ok, now taking another look trying to see this the way you do

the color is good ( I agree which is why dress drives me nuts trying to style it)
black sheer hose would be better (oh yes)
the sheer skirt under got a thumbs up from Angie! Wow, feeling much better now
and change out the bib necklace (check, can do, have others in black and darker silver)

I will put it back in the closet again, and give it a new try in a week or so. Gotta think on the shoes options

Christineanne- using it as a tunic is also a great idea! Hope that can be my next attempt, in flat shoes! (joy of flat shoes)

I agree with your assessment somewhat - although I think you are being too hard on yourself, we are our worst critics, I swear - but if Angie says it works, is because it does.
This dress is a perfect candidate for the legging / dress look.

Your story is cracking me up - I've gotten to work with two mismatched sox twice in the past couple of months because of the hectic nature of getting us all out the door in the mornings ; )

Anyway, I think the addition of a black belt would be fun to try. What a pretty color that dress is on you!

I can SO relate to the whining teenaged photographer! If you saw this outfit on someone else you probably wouldn't have batted an eye. Maybe just too many edgy elements for you all at once? I'm noticing that it takes a while for something new to feel like *me*, but then once it does I can juggle all the balls again and soon I'm ready to add another new one.

I really like the way you layered a skirt under the dress. I think the clouds just parted and now I hear angels singing. Do you realize how often I have to pass up dresses because they're too short (and I don't like leggings on me)? Thank you for posting this, Jayne. It's really a good outfit, just tweak it a little to make it feel more like you!

I think you look great! Kudos for being creative. I agree that simpler hose might be better, but overall I was expecting something much worse from the title and intro

I also like it! I think I would leave off this particular necklace and maybe go for a long, simple pendant instead (or no necklace at all), but it's a fun look with clever layering. I second the thought of trying this dress as a tunic! Try over skinny and flared jeans, too

I like it too. Isn't it ridiculous when things we throw on work great, and the outfits we painstakingly plan out fall flat? That's how it works with me a lot of the time, anyway...

I am so flattered you gals like this outfit. I really felt out there. It has been a great therapy session! Aida had another great idea to try with jeans. So I think the tunic is saved for now.

The outfit is cool except for the look of tights with the whole outfit that's quite bothering me too. How about a plain tights or no tights at all. Also ballet flats would work great with this dress (if you like them.)

Jayne, you certainly do ot look like a fashion victim however this is all bit too 80's for me:). Some tweaking would make it look more current IMO. Leave off the necklace and patterened tights. Have you thought of wearing the tunic over a pencil skirt with a slim black belt? Have a look at Audi at http://geekthreads.blogspot.com.au/. She wears desses over dresses a lot and I love how she does this. You may glean some further inspiration from her.

I think the tunic is worth keeping and please accept my opinion for what it is:). I lived through the 80's so it's not always easy for me to revisit the fashion.

The input is great Deborah. I was not "me" in this outfit. My current plan is to add another 5 inches of fabric at the bottom, in another color, like emerald!

I saw a royal blue high low with a turquoise strip at the bottom. But I will keep it in the same length. Then If I WANT to layer over another dress or tights, then it is not because I have to.
