WIW: Kimono and Denim Again (+ Outfit Creation)

The Anthro silk kimono topper I've been stalking went on sale, so I ordered it as the last of my summer "five" and am wearing it in a simple kimono with denim ensemble (#1) today.

I also did a quick outfit creation session.

#2 Same outfit with denim skirt instead of jeans, western boots, and hat.
#3 Over burgundy jersey dress. This dress was on notice for being too body-con, but the kimono helps with that, while transitioning it for cooler days.
#4 Over the same dress, but tied closed for more of a kaftan look. Not sure about this one.

I also tried the kimono on last night over a couple colors of skinnies, as well as with some pattern mixing (who knew a striped tee would look great beneath the sheer floral silk?!) It's surprising how versatile it's turning out to be.

Thanks, Tanya and Mirjana! I think #4 feels like a little much to me, just because I don't wear many prints, so it helps to have someone else's perspective.

Robin, Jen, and Joy. I think the denim skirt version is my favorite from this batch, too, which is interesting because I've barely worn that skirt this summer. I love how a single new item can breathe fresh life into older pieces.

El Cee, yes! Marked down 40%, plus an "extra 40%" sale. Usually, things I want aren't left by the time they hit that level of clearance.

Barbara Diane, I was quite surprised to have it turn out to be so versatile. It's also lightweight enough to wear as a scarf, which is how it first caught my eye on the local Anthro store's Instagram feed.

Brooklyn, that's a good idea to think of it like a tunic top when worn closed like that. It does work well, both open and tied shut, with skinnies!

All work, I have a preference for #2-3, with the kimono the same length as the outfit beneath. Great styling with hat and cowboy boots in #2. The dress looks fabulously flattering. I agree with Brooklyn on wearing the closed version with skinnies.

columbine - Copy away! I've been surprised by how quickly this kimono topper style has caught on. I was in a trendy-ish part of Denver yesterday, and saw several people wearing them.

StyleFan - My hair is at the perfect stage of grow-out between cuts right now. I'm enjoying it while it lasts!

It looks great on you. I like it both open and tied. It's a dramatic look, and you carry it off with great style.

Upon further thought, I think the hat and boots make the caftan-style work well--it looks chic, not like you're just trying to hide behind the fabric. Also the skirt and some leg showing. I'm not sure I'd like the kimono worn this way quite as well with pants.

Firecracker, thank you for putting my worries about #4 into words. "Hiding behind the fabric" was exactly the thing I was concerned about. One thing that works to this kimono's advantage is that it's quite sheer. It's not really obvious in the pictures, but you can pretty much always see the shape of the body through the fabric, which gives it some structure despite the loose fit.
