WIW: Just More Gear

We went to the very middle of nowhere yesterday. We went birding at a state wildlife area. We had had snow at home the day before, but it was a beautiful, if chilly and windy day.

What I wore: Patagonia, Columbia, REI, Salomon. In #1, I regretted leaving my gloves and warm hat in the car. It was in the 40s but really blowing.

2. Osprey and nest
3. Tundra swans
4. White pelicans
5. Meadowlark
6. Mr Skunky (not his real name) enjoyed leaning out the window. It was awfully cold, but as long as he’s happy.

Nice shots of the birds! The dogs steal my heart, though. You look cute in your gear. What a shame to be wanting the warm gear that remained in the car--I hate it when that happens!

You look warm and comfortable. The birds are fabulous. We have been watching the feeders and heated bird bath to catch anything unusual. We are into the first day of a big snowstorm and had lots of birds. The most fun are the flickers. We have both armed shafted pair and a yellow shafted pair that fight over the suet. The juncos are hopping to get under the deck to get out of the heavy snow. The newest to us visitors are red-winged black birds who probably returned too early. Last week we went to a state park to see dozens of bald eagles

Gorgeous, I love our local ospreys. Mr Skunky looks particularly happy.

During yesterday’s walk we saw a great blue heron! After a brief tease of spring, it’s back to temps just around freezing - so puffer, warm hat, mitts. The sun is strong though - so sunscreen.

Firecracker, my fingers were starting to hurt they were so cold. It looked like a nice day, but was actually fierce.

Joy, how wonderful to have two kinds of flickers. We saw several bald eagles, but I didn’t get any photos. They are huge!

Bijou, I love ospreys, too. When we visited Florida pre-pandemic, we saw a nest up close and personal, less than ten feet from us. This platform was off in the distance, unfortunately.

Carla, the day following this outing was warm and sunny, and we’re expecting a storm this evening.

Angie, they are very good boys, most of the time.

Smittie, we have a local lake where the pelicans breed. I love seeing them.

Suntiger, thank you for sharing your sandhill crane photo. I’ve seen them before, but never a baby one. Wonderful!

Christel, I grew up near San Francisco, and we had brown pelicans, too, but it was rare to see them. They have made a comeback after DDT was banned.

Great photos! “Just more gear” is how I feel most days too. That pale blue puffy is such a pretty colour.

The wind here has been relentless too. Our big outing this weekend was driving down to the seacoast for the first time in more than a year. Fun to see gulls and sandpipers!

LaPed, yeah, it’s gear all day, everyday, here. We have a Patagonia outlet store here, so I have an a lot of it. The jacket was a lucky find.

Smittie, even though we had snow a few days ago, spring is getting close.
