WIW: JCrew pants, EF pants, and a question about length

I know I said I'd stop posting so much this week :)...but.....here I am getting my clothes organized for a 5 day trade show in Toronto. Dressing nicely, and better, is necessary. Need your thoughts on pant length in first set of pics. Other set - just an FYI on fit!

Pics 1-4 : EF cropped pegged pants. Trying to figure out length vis a vis footwear. Pic 4 shows how much skin (gasp) is exposed when I bend my knee (i.e, walking, sitting, bending etc). I'm wearing with a suede bootie, and the pants JUST cover the top of the boot when I'm standing. Because the pants are shortish, for this show I'd like to wear a dressier/pointier shoe to dress this look up. What do you do with pants this length that are slightly pegged (in other words, rolling/cuffing isn't really an option)?? Is this the shoe to pair with this length of pant?

pics 5 and 6 : the J Crew Maddies - tried them with the same suede booties, and then with these new oxfords. I'm liking them with the oxfords for a bit of a menswear vibe, and will likely wear with this jacket. Pic taken from side and front to show the fit. LOVE them. And I take back my comment about wishing they were longer - I think I must have been taller that day This is perfect.

What is the measurement of the rise on the Maddies? The web site does not say.

I'm not sure about how to wear the EF pants--they seem a bit in-between, both length and width/taper, to me.

Lisa, I like both looks you show here--the EF with the booties, and the JCrew with oxfords. Something else you could do with the EF pants, if you don't like the flash of skin, is to wear black trouser socks or knee-high tights. I did that using brown trouser socks with the pegged brown trousers below. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, for sure, but I really liked the look and feel of this solution. I'm also showing a pic where I showed ankle with the same pants. (Actually photo order is reversed, but you get the idea.)

sharan - oh of course I'll have hosiery on , these pics were just taken in my bedroom and I stuck the boots on to check for length without putting socks on

You are in luck that the booties worn with the EF pants are low contrast and have a slightly higher shaft. Add black knee-highs or trouser socks. That way you'll create a column of colour when you sit down. Looks good. Very fashionable.

YAY. The Maddies. Great fit. Mine are about that length too. LOVE them with high vamped flat footwear. High five, you.

Great - thanks Angie, I do like this EF length but am mindful that there are finer points to pant length I may not always pay attention to.

These are those Naot patent crinkle oxfords that I think were posted here on the forum several months ago . Best shoes ever. May not be the coolest, but for comfort, they are fantastic.

These are terrific pants on you -- both! Wonderful looks. I always defer to Angie on pant length. And, also, not only do I love the oxfords, but I really love those dressy booties!! Do I need another pair of dressy booties? Oh, like I need (another) hole in my head. But still...you wouldn't want to reveal their provenance, would you?

Suz - Brown's. Snagged 'em on a major, major discount (less than half price I think). I am still debating keeping them - they are a bit flexible/soft feeling on the sole and around the sides which I can't quite get my head around. Have to decide if they are supportive enough. They are almost too comfortable, if that makes any sense

You know what I'd love? Are some ideas for jackets /toppers for the grey pants that are more interesting than my usual black leather, black blazer, etc . What colours are good with grey that would really make a statement? I need a statement .

I think it's the oxfords with the pants that are confusing me. I don't feel very " "dressed up" in lace-up flats , which is why I want something really out there for a topper . It's almost like a blazer is the wrong piece with flat shoes, no? Great, now I'll be obsessing over this for 3 days.

I love the citron and blush and lavender ideas - and all are on my wish list for Spring. Thanks for the links Angie, I've pinned all of them! I want citron!! Now!! Suz - good idea to check out Danier, but last time I was in, it was all black, black and more black. Not a colour in sight. Can you imagine a chartreuse or citron leather jacket? I might just lose my mind

Yuk. The longer I think about how to wear the grey pants, the more I dislike what I had on in the pic. How boring! Grey pants and a black jacket. Blech. I am NOT taking them on my trip unless I score a great sweater or jacket in a bright colour, AND a pair of neutral or metallic flats. Angie, once again , your ensembles are schooling me in how not to dress predictably.

Lisa - you are being hard on yourself! Your outfit with the grey pants is great! Sure, Angie has other suggestions, but they are just additional. Black is fab with grey - truly my fallback. The elegance and panache is in the details. Your shoes are uber-cool. Your jacket is cool. The pants are cool. You are cool. Seriously!!! Plus, you're travelling so stuff has to go-together in your travel capsule. So why not black and grey. Do it woman.

And for the record, I'm pretty sure i tried on a citron leather jacket at the Danier outlet last year or the year before. I wouldn't have been an official member here but I wonder if I saved my selfie....

Thanks jackie - it's that so much of my professional wardrobe is black and black and grey. Every time I own grey pants, I end up not wearing them much because I don't really know what to do with them. Angie's ensemble suggestions are really how I want to dress - and how I'd love to wear a pair of light grey pants. I need the pieces to do it with though -and it may mean these pants wait 'til spring when brights appear in stores. Did you buy that leather jacket? I hope Danier or BCBG have some citron or lime for Spring.

Hey Lisa - found it! You never know what you might find in Danier! Keep your eyes open in the spring. This was last year probably April-ish (I know b/c there's a Danier outlet close to a rink where my son often plays hockey in the spring...the #1 reason why I volunteer to drive on those days ;)). It didn't come home with me. The coral one did, but I returned it...

Yup - it is spring when Danier traditionally had all the wild and fun colours. I don't know if they will do it this year because I think in general they veered more black this year than usual -- but we can cross fingers. The Outlets usually just have the back stock, I think -- it's not a different product. More like overstocks, although there might be a few styles not offered at regular retail.

What bugs me is that the current website really doesn't show a whole lot. On the old site you could go back several years and find stuff still available in a few sizes (at the Outlet). But now they seem to show very little.

Lisa, sure a bright colour would be great, but black is also great. Can you wear a scarf with the black or would that be too much? And maybe a cardigan or pullover in a bright colour would do the trick?

Is the idea to draw a bit of attention to yourself because you are showing stuff? I do agree that a vivid and flattering colour would be excellent for that.

You just sent me off to Brown's website where I spent a good hour trying to talk myself out of buying those booties and a whole lot of other boots. So far I succeeded. I really DO need a replacement pair of snowboots, but I'm scared to order without trying on. And those black booties are an amazing deal! Excellent for wearing with a skirt, too. Great score!

No,the bright jacket is not to draw attention to me - it's simply because I like that idea of mixing grey with white, blush, citron, or even pink. I own exactly ZERO pieces of clothing in those colours. I am serious when I say I own no colour. As you have noticed from some of my whining on this forum, I do not have a huge wardrobe. It doesn't have a lot of breadth and my winter clothes are all pretty neutral. I have a mixed relationship with colour - at times I feel it's aging and "missy" looking (the kiss of death fashion term from waaaay back - lol) then at times I wish I had some. I have never felt very well, happy, as Angie puts it, in a light grey worn with black. I can't explain it, it just doesn't have any oomph to it. I have a lot of careful buying to do to get some colour into my closet, and to get some pieces that are outfit makers. I am really looking forward to adding in these colours which to me are not "missy" looking and dowdy - but it will take some time. Retail here is still very much in winter mode.

As for the boots - Browns has a crazy sale right now. And tons of boots. Jill bought a great pair of distressed red lace-up almost Timberland-style boots that actually made me think of you:)
