WIW is this ironic?

I like Amy from TIBI and her styling pictures. She says wear your midis like joggers for irony. So this is my work outfit. Everyone noticed the skirt with many women saying it is really pretty and one man telling me I look very casual. I laughed out loud as I’m the queen of jeans but the usual boots and jackets must override the casualness of jeans. What do you think suggestions? Bonus pic of my Diwali outfit.

Sally I think you look great! I struggle with midis (and have also become a real Amy S fan since Jaime turned me onto her a few weeks ago), and I think you hit the nail on the head. So funny about your colleague's comment: it is true that whenever we step out of our usual track, someone is bound to notice (and that's ok!).

Yes agree with notsaf - colleague was probably noticing the change rather than making a thoughtful assessment. Although a blazer does give off somewhat formal vibes even to jeans. Anyway, I think this looks great and gets the vibe you are going for very nicely. Beautiful Diwali outfit!

Pretty & practical skirt look! Yeah if you want to switch up your work look a bit, usually people stop commenting after it's been a couple of weeks because they get used to the change (it's not 'new' to them anymore).

I'm guessing 'midi as joggers' just means dressing up the usual 'sweatpants & trainers' look with a 'midi skirt & trainers' instead?

Love the colours in the Diwali outfit too - but you know I'm biased towards those sorts of shades anyway haha

Thank you everyone for the feedback. Ok the comment Amy made was to freshen up a midi, go for what is unexpected I guess. The example she gives in the illustration I’ve attached is probably more shaped with a half tucked sweater.

Notsaf and Jaime I think you are right. I once wore my hair up at school and my colleague didn’t recognise me.
Zaeobi I guess yes we just wear our midi with sneakers and a casual top. My other option were Birkenstocks and a denim jacket.

I like the inspiration pic! So yeah, I would say you just wore that skirt very nonchalantly — like joggers. Well done.

Sneakers with a skirt are pretty mainstream, but I have no idea how to wear joggers. You look great in the Diwali outfit. Is it widely celebrated there?

CarolS Thank you -think the word nonchalantly is good and probably how you wear joggers.
Stagiaire Fash- yes Diwali is celebrated by many well at least where I live it is. My friend who lives in a small town in the South Island said she doesn’t see the same diversity.

I'd have preferred a less athletic looking sneaker with the skirt, but this works!

I like the idea of treating the skirt more like an essential rather than strictly dressy, and experimenting.
I have several knife- pleated midi’s and I’m sort of determined to try more ways to wear them. The “ usual suspects “ are with T shirt, sweatshirt, combat boots, sneakers , along with dressier tops & sweaters.
I do need to watch proportions- well, that’s what I like to do although trying some not conventionally flattering proportions would be part of stretching the options.

Yes I think it is a good idea to try and treat the skirts as an essentials much the same way as we treat pants. It does take some doing though so as not to appear dowdy and like you I am trying some proportions that are not conventionally flattering but don't want to venture into completely off...a tricky balance.
