Thanks Missey, Debbie, Elizabeth, deb, Neel, shevia, kiwigal, thimbleina, Uggbootdiva, Deborah, dianthus and texstyle !
bj1111 - yeah, even with a small on the coat rather than a medium I can still fit lightweight sweaters underneath, and it's a little better fit (actually it looks a little more fitted in the waist in the mirror than in the photos).
caro - yes, I've only dyed clothes that were inexpensive, or otherwise on their way out due to fading.
Gigi - it is exhausting with all the rinsing and stirring, assuming you don't do it in a washer which saves all the labor (I have a front-loading washer so it doesn't work as well, although I've used a top loading washer in the past just fine).
Dashielle - heh I do my hair too, and re-dying denim can be one of the more foolproof things to do I think. I think you can even use household blueing for it.
tulle - thanks, and good advice on the heathering. I've used Mrs. Stewart's bluing for yellowing items, have you ever used that? With RIT dye do you use hot water? That's where I got into trouble in the past, I ended up shrinking some favorite printed tees I was trying to dye back to a rich black background. Which blue do you use? I'd read Amazon reviews that RIT navy turned out purple for some folks, so I tried this dye I got at an art supply shop instead. Yes, I like my sporran/furry pet bag.
Firecracker - heh, I kind of fell for this bag at Goodwill, it had a not so attractive decorative strap across the front, but it was in like new condition so I cut that off. I've found dying not as time consuming in a top loading washer, but by hand going for deep colors, it can be. With things like the pants you can test first by dipping in a white paper towel and rinsing and drying it. I ended up dying the pants for about five minutes, rinsing them out and letting them dry, and when that didn't make much difference in color, dyed them again in the same solution for 15 more minutes.
Beth Ann - ha, I did it in a big steel canning pot (not used for food) in a stainless steel sink, so most of the mess was contained, but it did occasionally splash so I wore old black clothes.
goldenpig - thanks, it was great to meet you and share the tables with your kids (being awfully cute with deb and bj) also.
