Angie's post on quiet columns reminded me that there were some outfits I wanted to post.

1) I keep trying a monochromatic look, but it makes me feel blah even though I like the look on others. I thought the necklace would add some shine to liven it up, but I still was not enjoying this outfit.

2) My cold winters are short, so I was trying to rotate through my toppers. Just the addition of a pattern to an otherwise sedate color combo makes me happy!

3 & 4) The bit of color in the pink jacket against the grey pinstripe button down and the medium wash jeans is nothing fancy, but I'm drawn to the contrast. Also the little coffee cup earrings makes me smile.

5 & 6) I really liked the striped button down layered with the floral bomber, but do you think the length of the shirt makes the whole outfit appear sloppy? Or could it be the contrasting sneakers that make the outfit seem off?

7) In the mirror, this outfit seemed fine, but looking at this photo, it looks a bit dated. Maybe the belt? Style of necklace?

8) This one is pretty chatty! Even though I am an introvert, I apparently like my outfits to do all the talking, because this one made me very happy. The camo pants have 2 shades of green, grey, and black. The sneakers bookend the flowers. I was also having a good curly hair day and that always lifts my mood.

9 - 11) I saved the best column for last because this was a whispering column, but I suppose the tailored fit and the little details with the light lilac moto, earrings, and raw edges of the top just all aligned wonderfully.

My Favs are #3 and 7 although they are all good. To me your coloring shines with contrast So have fun with it!

I'm drawn to ensemble #1; I like the elegance of it. Would you like it more if you wore a scarf in browns, rusts and creams rather than the current necklace? Best wishes to all.

This is so interesting, AJ, and it just goes to show how personal style is! I can understand VioletMyra's love for #1, it is casually elegant on you and you wear it well. But I understand even better your own feeling that it's not "you" and not really an "outfit." That's how I tend to feel in solid columns of colour (on myself -- I enjoy them on others!) and I would be itching to add some pattern or textural interest as well, as per your second outfit. I mean...I say that, and yet I have worn "white out" lots of times and enjoyed that...but usually there is some accessory or textural element or graphic detail that makes it feel more "me" somehow.

I can see why you enjoyed #3 -- and I love the inventive layering in #5/6. I don't think it looks sloppy at all. It seems quite intentional. LOVE 9-11 -- no wonder you were happy in that!

I like the contrast and fun details ( jewelry is fun in my book ). Love #2, #6-7, #9- 11 ( my favorite and somewhat close to what I wear to work now - wide leg jeans, dark top/graphic tee and off white moto jacket ).
Monochromatic looks are somewhat less my "thing" since my 5'4" and gamine shape do better with separates with contrast.

I am similar in that quiet clothing just does not feel like me, as much as I admire it on others. You really shine when wearing statement items - #11 is superb. I am all for DYOT and having fun with fashion, the coffee cup earrings are delightful!

Gosh these are all superb outfits! My personal favourites are 2 and 7. With regard to your question I prefer to wear a bomber jacket with a more fitted top, not a button down. There is nothing wrong at all with that outfit but I get what you feeling. I feel like it is too much masculine on masculine on me, I like a to have a balance of masculine and feminine in one outfit.

I love #8 and 9-11! The denim on denim look in 9-11 is fantastic, great proportions and interesting with the raw hems. Where did you get the top? Cute earrings too.

Nice! My favourites are # 2 (i like the color combo and the funny jacket), # 7 (i like the juxtaposition short fitted jacket/wide pants) and # 9 ( the t-shirt fits you very well and the addition of the jacket makes the outfit chic!).

The last outfit is perfection!

With the first outfit, I wonder if the simplicity or casualness of the sweater is the problem. If you were to wear, say, a cable or open knit sweater in the same colour, maybe it would feel better. Or maybe a stronger necklace. I think the outfit lacks a statement piece, IYKWIM.

Love the layering in 2 and 6.

Love 8. What’s not to love about camo.

7 looks fine to me but I often feel a bit off when I wear a necklace and belt together. It can make things a bit busy. Maybe that’s the issue?

Always interesting hearing your take on these outfits too, I myself have trouble doing quiet columns and always feel a need to “jazz” an outfit up a bit more with some pattern.

Outfit #1 does look good, but perhaps switching to a pendant necklace would add some vertical length to the shine you wanted. I think you might be right about the colour of the shoes in outfit #6, they do break up the line of your leg and perhaps contribute to feeling a bit “sloppy”. Love all your other outfits, #7 isn’t dated to my eye, it looks fab. 9 and 11 are great tailored fits, and wonderful proportions.

My favourite is #7. It's on trend to boot. Wide crops + Denim on Denim! Fab sleeve scrunch on the jacket! Swap out the necklace for something more to your taste next time. Wear our taupe patent boots with the look, and a belt to match.

#9 - #11 are my next faves! I love you in wide crops! Elegant! Especially with your VERY pretty cascading hair.

I really like #7, #9, and #11. That dark wash, raw Edge denim top is perfection. I also like the contrast of the light and the dark denim together, but I do slightly prefer the Moto with the dark denim.

Honestly, I really like outfit #1 for ME, but I can see that it would not be for everyone.

I can relate to your feeling best with some contrast, pattern or color. You look fab in all these, but I'm partial to 7, 8, 9-11. Your jackets are especially great! I have a fondness for jackets.

You are making the most of your short winter--love your layering game :)! I can see why you think #1 felt underwhelming, I agree with the suggestions of adding some textural element to make it feel more lively. I love the pink jacket layered over the stripes--so springy and looks lovely.
