WiW: Holday outfit, Lace and Leopard

Went out last night to a festive holiday event, a Christmas-themed burlesque show, along with a big group of my friends, and including another YLF member, Moira, who looked smashing!

I was going to wear a simple LBD but at very last moment the outfit felt uninspired (especially knowing Moira was coming!). So I wound up doing a last-minute switcheroo, swapping the black dress for

- AT halter black silk cowl neck top
- Lace pencil skirt, which I've had for a long time but is pretty much a closet orphan.

... and keeping the rest of the outfit the same:

- microfishnets
- Me Too black suede wedge booties
- leopard clutch
- F21 vegan leather moto (worn under a black puffer coat, not shown, and kept on all night long for warmth)

I was in a rush so I left, only for it to hit me later in the car "wow that's a lot of pattern going on there.. WHAT was I thinking??"

QUESTIONS:

1. Is it too over the top?
2. How else can I wear this skirt, especially in the next few weeks for the holidays?

As for the skirt and why it is an orphan: first and foremost, I don't consider myself a lace type. But I bought it on sale (seriously discounted) thinking maybe I could play with it and learn to love it. The only other time I wore it, it twisted funny all night long, and I couldn't wait to take it off. I then stuffed it in storage for a long time, until this year. Since lace is "in" and I have been getting more into skirts lately, I figured I'd give it One. Last. Chance. My weight must've been different (not sure if heavier or thinner), because it didn't twist last night. I'm just not sure how else I would wear it?

P.s. We did snap a photo of both Moira and I together but there's a third friend in the pic and she is not a YLF member, so I hesitate to post it. Hopefully Moira will post her own WiW.

I think you look GREAT. That skirt is perfect for the holidays!

I have to laugh, Shiny, because your eyes always remind me of the "Shining" when you post - I always have to wonder if the pun is intentional?

Not too much at all, this looks great! A burlesque show calls for a little more oomph anyway. Just out of curiosity, does the lining of the skirt show more because of the flash or is the pic true to life?

I love this! There really isn't such a thing as too much at a burlesque show, right? Even if it were a different venue, I think this all works well.
There a part of me that loves the idea of mixing a lace skirt with a old school band tee, just for the juxtaposition fun. You could also debombshell it with a bright chunky sweater.

You can't go wrong with leather and lace! Especially for a burlesque show, I think this is just perfect.

I like Atlantia's ideas for casualizing it too. And the 90's girl in me loves the idea of lace with combat boots.

Sarah -- I don't know what it is but I think it is my camera phone (iphone), because every last picture taken with it last night had someone doing the shining eyes, even those I didn't take myself! Usually I try looking down at my shoes so that I can avoid this effect, but these pics were taken right when we got home (late and tipsy). So no, it's not intentional. And "Shiny" is a nickname I acquired ages ago that has stuck.

Pil-- the pics aren't quite true to life, but yes, the skirt has similar contrast in person. The underslip is a satin that is subtle, soft pinkish color. It is a bit flesh toned, which is what made me pull it out when I was trying to find something appropriate for burlesque. I seem to recall it was a spring item, not winter.

Diana and Atlantia -- I love the ideas of chunky sweater and combat boots. And you made me realize that the reason this felt more "right" last night was that I funked it up, instead of going more feminine/girly-girl.... I guess that is the ticket!

I really like how you styled the lace skirt here! I don't think the leopard looks like too much pattern in this instance.

Love the outfit, esp. the skirt! The lace is not the same ol', same ol' lace, if you know what I mean. Have you tried it with a denim shirt and that type of thing?

Love! I can't believe that is a F21 jacket, although I just thifted a gorgeous F21 blue one, which I think looks great. What is up with them?

Donna, I do think this would work with a denim jacket. I would *love* to pair with a denim shirt but the skirt is very lightweight and tucking in such a shirt will create lumps and bulges. I suppose leaving it untucked might work... hmm, maybe I will try that tomorrow for a tree-trimming party we are going to in the afternoon.

Shevia, yeah, I know, what is up with that?? This was an impulse buy and I've had so much use out of it. I would love to find a real leather version but I seem to have better luck with vegan versions; just added another black pleather jacket from H&M with long sleeves, in fact. The nice thing about this F21 cropped jacket is that it's super lightweight-- so perfect for wearing indoors, and fits nicely under outwear.

Do you have a red or an emerald green top? I know it's a bit predictable, but either *would* work with the skirt, at least potentially.
